Excellent signing by DD! Pearce and Moreland will enhance each others performance. Pearce should help Moreland from wearing down in the second half of the season.

He easily could have made more on the open market. He chose to play for his favorite team and win again. It is honorable if not financially stupid

It's hard to say if he's leaving much money on the table. Last year Logan Morrison waited forever to sign and then signed for 6.5 mill.

I think you massively overestimate the earning potential of 35yo career bench players...

Nice. Once again, DD does not screw around. And such a reasonable deal. Hometown discount?

I’ve been saying this amount (but not years) for 3 weeks. It’s the market price...

The lowest salary on MLBTR's projections was $6M/1, and Pearce did not even make the list, so this does not look like an overpay.

It's the years that surprised me.

Good thing signing Pearce. I was hoping signing Eovaldi/Kimbrel/whoever wouldn’t prevent it...

Does Pearce's signing now prevent someone else's?

This was 1million percent a home town discount. Years and cash.

I figure we are at about $215M with arb costs. If we want to stay under the $40M line ($246M total counting player benefits), we have about $31M to spend. Assume we save $4-6M for mid season deals, we may have about $25M to spend.

$16M x 2 or 3 yrs Eovaldi

$9M x 2 or 3 yrs Familia/Ottavino/Miller

Dunno. That’s a question for DD.

It’s possible the $60mill/4year guesses (for Eovaldi) were way off base...

It is interesting, in that after next year we will potentially have an open position at 1st base with Both Moreland and Pearce contracts up, while in 2019 we have the same strong 1st base presence we had in 2018. DD with have the flexibility to move Devers to 1st for 2020, go to the FA market or potentially move a minor leaguer up. Looks like the 1 year contract was designed to maintain flexibility going forward. Another excellent DD move.

So by your calculations, it looks like bringing back Pearce might have prevented the return of Kelly/replacement set up guy.

This does assume the team is limited by luxury tax thresholds.

By even simpler math, it means goodbye to Blake Swihart (or another catcher)...
