I'm okay with Sandy catching.

But can we not over valuer his pitch calling? Starters still need to hit the spots.

You'd think Rick would be pitching a perfect game with Sandy behind the plate.

We need that with some lower cost guys making major contributions. Brasier certainly is and now Chavis, at least for the time being.

Leon supporters like myself don't expect anything like that. The idea is just that the more comfortable and confident the pitcher is with the guy beyond the plate, the better their CHANCES.

In my keeper roto league last September I took a flier on Ryan Brasier in the final weekly draft. I’m not a huge Michael Chavis fan but he’ll be my pick in this week’s draft.

Sox probably should have grabbed one of the other available arms to at least help the workload in the 7th and 8th tho.

If you look at the top RP'er signings this past winter, most have sucked or are hurt. Less than a handful have done well, so far.

I know. I was somewhat lamenting passing over Cody Allen, but he's been horrible.

I was surprised DD passed on Justin Wilson an Alex Wilson, since he’s acquired both before with Detroit. Justin has been good. Alex not so much...

I must have mentioned Cody over 20 times last winter.

He probably knows them better than we do, and maybe not in a good way.

Well than he was right 50% of the time. Although Alex Wilson has only pitched 11 IP and has plenty of time to turn it around. With Justin, it was probably strictly financial. Although he does make less than Steve Pearce.

It’s really surprising because DD hasn’t hesitated to add his former Tiger players to the Sox organization, including JD, Dan Schlereth, Jhonny Peralta, etc..

Yeah, but he passed on Iggy. :)

Only because of Bogaerts.

All things considered, it worked out perfectly gor Iglesias...

It worked out best for the Sox because letting Iggy go turned out to be genius. His cumulative WAR, 2014-18, is 7 and Bogie's is twice that for the same period. And I was a huge Iggy fan because of defense.

I'm a huge fan of Iggy's defense for helping us get past the Tigers in the ALCS.

He did a lot to rob us too. I remember Ortiz hitting a blooper into shallow left against the shift and Iglesias running further than ivyseen any shortstop range from the other side of 2b to catch it in the air...

Chavis should hopefully get the bulk of the at bats and become our 2B for a the next 5+ years.

A wide range of outcomes is possible for Michael Chavis.

Chavis made his MLB debut when he was 16 days older than Will Middlebrooks was when the latter made his debut.

The Red Sox had drafted each out of high school five years earlier as a righthand-hitting infielder with power.

Their pre-callup minor league numbers were similar, including their concerning K/BB ratios.

Nevertheless I am on board with Chavis.

Again, it was never Iggy against Bogey. The idea was to keep both and move Bogey to 3B.

One could start an argument about moving him to 2B, but we have no SS to take his place.

(Plus, Bogey is pretty close to average on defense in some metric standards.)

Actually it was Iglesias vs Bogaerts.

Fans wanted the idea of keeping Iglesias at shortstop and converting Bogaerts to 3b. But the Sox for some odd reason liked Will Middlebrooks at third. And they liked the idea of Bogaerts at SS for the future.

Later that season they did employ Bogaerts at 3b, but reportedly he was just very uncomfortable playing the position and couldn’t get settled in. Apparently they scrapped the idea.

In fact, due to frequent injuries to Middlebrooks, the Sox were actually using Iglesias at 3b and Stephen Drew at SS. They really appeared to think of Iglesias as a utility player since they had nowhere for him to play regularly. (The Tigers wouldn’t have either if not for Jhonny Peralta’s PED suspension.) Probably a big part of the reason he was expendable. Although I wanted Middlebrooks to be the one gone...

The argument made by myself and many others was to keep both Iggy and Bogey and trade Middy.

I think either the Sox liked Middlebrooks or no one around the League did. Or both...

It wasn't about what we could get for Middy. It was about having a great defensive SS and a solid 3Bman.

No. It was about getting a starting pitcher to replace Doubtont or Workman in the rotation. Maybe that wasn’t possible for Middlebrooks. Although I’d have thought the White Sox should be interested in him since they hadn’t had anyone at3b since Joe Crede. But maybe they weren’t...

There were a lot of us that wanted Iggy at SS and Bogey at 3B.

The Middy part of the equation was clearly secondary, especially as he began to show he sucked.

I, for one, didn't feel we needed to get anything for Middy to make the above plan worthwhile.
