Hmmm are you sure the reason you loathe Petitte more isn't because he was a Yankee and Clemens was a Sox for 13 years??
No, he ratted on a friend to save his own skin. That makes him worse.

I honestly don't remember all the details. How did ratting on Clemens save Pettitte's skin?

It was a negotiated thing and it was agreed that he would not have to testify in person in front of Congress and look Clemens in the eye. They let him do it by way of affidavit behind closed doors. He had been caught in lies about how many times he had used etc., so he gave up his friend in a very cowardly way.

But this is what I don't understand. Nobody was talking about anointing Buch as "THE CLOSER" coming out of the gate. He'd just have been a viable - and relatively inexpensive - option if necessary. I even like him as a starter better than, say, Colton Brewer, and it't not unusual to go ten deep for a starter at some point in the season.

We don't need to spend $3-6M on a 6th starter, especially when we are about $5.5M from the max penalty line.

I think most of us recognized that he would likely get a major league contract with some team. All we were saying is that he would definitely be worth signing to a minor league deal. The fact that a team is willing to sign him to a major league deal makes the second sentence all that more valid.

I get your point, but I felt all along he was going to get a ML deal.

I'm not against signing anybody to a minor league deal with no budget addition.

Maybe Clay will be a midseason Red Sox acquisition.

I guess I just don't get the infatuations with ex-Sox players.

He did, but ratting on a liar, cheater & child predator (molester?) is not all that horrible...friend or no friend.

He was all of those things, except I think convicting him as a child predator is going a bit far. I am not defending Clemens' character, but just saying that Pettitte is everything Clemens is plus he is a hypocrite and a rat. IMO, he is the lower character of the 2.

I didn't say "convict", but I have seen nothing on Petite hitting an 16 year old girls.

That's worse than anything else being discussed, assuming it is true.

Most down here in Sugar Land, TX seem to think of Clemens as a real creep.

It's just my opinion that Pettitte is slimier based on the known facts.

Buchholz is not just any ex-Sox player. He's one of the few Red Sox homegrown starting pitchers of our lifetimes who had the potential to be elite. He didn't achieve the potential, we all know that, but he still shows the flashes of greatness. And when he's on he's one of the most fun pitchers to watch.

Still, I'd stay away from him.

It's not an infatuation with ex Sox players. Clay is a very good pitcher. He has ace quality stuff. Yes, he has both physical and mental issues, but when he is right, he can be dominant. He is worth taking a chance on. If he could give us what he gave the DBacks last year, I'd be down with that.

Only because we already have our starting five and we are under financial constraints.

For me, nothing to do with being former Red Sox and everything to do with him being really good and yet still in no position to break the bank...

I was one of Clay's biggest supporters when he was here, except for maybe the last year or two.

He's gone.

I prefer to keep it that way.

Me too.

I was working from home for couple of years.

Only no hitter I've ever watched from beginning to end was Clay's. If I recall, and I'm not sure it was the same year but I also seem to remember seeing the back to back to back to back home run.

I suspect the Starting Five is an outdated concept.

Teams will use their pitching staffs in more creative ways.

I don't really see why a starting five is necessarily a bad thing.

I think that depends on the health and the quality of the starting five.

I can't imagine Clay supplanting any of our current projected top 5.

I really like our starting 5. It's always nice to have great starter depth, but Johnson & Velazquez aren't even close to the worst 6th starters in MLB. They'd probably win the 5th starter role on some teams.

Buchholz signing with the jays is a bit sad. I always thought he would wind his way back to us. Preferably as a closer.

Fortunately we have feltman, Hernandez and lakins on the way for the bullpen.

Unfortunately we have an empty cupboard for position players and starting pitching in the high minors.

If they stay healthy, they are as good a starting 5 as any.

If I had to name my biggest concern for this season, it would be the health of our starting 5, which leads to starting pitching depth.

Clay could have probably helped our team quite a bit had he been willing to sign a minor league deal with us.

Clay did well getting the deal he got. He pitched well last year but started and ended on the DL. I like the move for the Jays and hope he does well.

This is a good deal for both the Jays and for Clay.

I hope he does well too, except when he pitches against us.

MLBTR...

Ryan Brasier has begun throwing from 90 feet, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith and other reporters, as Brasier continues to recover from a toe infection. The issue has slowed Brasier’s spring work, though the right-hander and potential closer candidate is expected to be ready for Opening Day.
