Porcello ain't no horse in my eyes. Way too pricey. In four years with us, he has an accumulated WAR of 8.2 which cost the Sox $73M or about $9M per WAR of 1. That's still cheaper, however, than paying $90M for Price's three seasons and accumulated WAR of 9 or $10M per WAR of 1.

He gives us quality innings and lots of innings.

He will be missed.

If we reset, we won't be replacing Porcello's $20M with someone esle at $20M. We will be replacing him with DHernandez, BJohnson or HVelazquez.

Severino (shoulder) 'highly unlikely' for opener

MRI shows rotator cuff inflammation; Yanks to shut down righty for 2 weeks

I don't ever want to see anyone hurt.

But injuries do happen. Not only to Red Sox starters.

I think jacko needs a small lesson on Dombrowskiball. Jacko, THIS is how Dave Dombrowski runs a team.

1. He trades prospects. Lots of them. It’s like he hates them.

2. He gives out big contracts. Also, lots of them. He pays for top tier talent unabashedly, never settling for any sort of discount. “Market Price is for wimps” is tattooed on his left arm while his right arm writes checks that redefine player valuation.

3. He doesn’t spend for bench players. Need a utility infielder? That’s what the minor leagues are for!! And you’d know that better if your minor league roster spots weren’t wasted on prospects!

4. For all the money he likes to spend, not so much for closers. He likes in-house options. While he does publicly say he thinks the ninth inning takes a special pitcher, history tells you he doesn’t believe it at all. Kimbrel was a rare case for him.

5. He really likes making trades. Possibly a bit too much, and he can get a little too focused on a player sometimes. That it took him three tries to get Colten Brewer feels like two too many.

And he can’t do all this without the occasional reset. You can only save so much money with minimum wage utility infielders and dirt cheap closers...

I am officially stating that I am on the Colten Brewer bandwagon.

Aaron Boone says it's "highly unlikely" Luis Severino will be ready for the start of the season.

Back to back to back to back.

It was already back to back to back to back before this news.

We could have had it all, with a little better long term planning a few years back.

We had it all last year and we have it all again this year.

What we are lacking is the young, cost-controlled revolving door needed to replace some of our expensive free agents to be.

Yes, IMO, it was possible to have our cake and eat it too.

I'm on a diet.

PS. Hernandez, Dalbec, Chavis, Chatham, Feltman....

Manuel Margot, Javier Guerra, Carlos Asuaje, and Logan Allen for Craig Kimbrel. Manuel has played 277 games with ops of .700. He's only 24. Not sure if we have a room for him right now. Our outfielders are pretty good.

Wade Miley and Jonathan Aro for Carson Smith and Roenis Elias. If there ever was a push....I guess Wade Miley could be an upgrade over Johnson. Who knew Carson Smith would get hurt?

Anderson Espinoza for Drew Pomeranz. Espinoza went 6-11 in 2016 in the minors and has not pitched since. I'm not sure when he'll resume pitching. I get it why we made the trade but I still think Espinoza could really turn out to be very good pitcher.

Travis Shaw, Mauricio Dubon, Josh Pennington, and Yeison Coca for Tyler Thornburg. Younger kids have not done much. Shaw's presence would have eliminated Moreland/Pearce. Shaw is only making $4.7M as a first year arbitration player.

Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Victor Diaz for Chris Sale. I would love to have Kopech (age 22) but we did have to give up quality to get 3 years of team friendly contract of Chris Sale.

Kimmi.....you keep talking about 'trading away' young talent but I doubt we win 3 straight division titles without these trades. Kimbrel gave us what we needed for 3 years.

Chris Sale is getting to deliver us another shot at the World Series title. What's not to like?

Some of the guys DD traded may turn out to be valuable players.

But as of this moment, there's not one you can point to and say we really miss not having them this year.

I agree. Kopech may have given us bullpen depth but we have guys in similar position..Feltman, Hernandez.

Travis Shaw?

Travis Shaw?

Yes, he is one, though ironically he wasn't really a prospect any more. And the numbers seemed to be on Dave's side.

Travis Shaw?

After the 2016 season, we thought we had better options than Shaw.

Both Hanley and Moreland played over 140 games in 2017.

Supposedly, Pablo came in better shape for the 2017 season. That really did not materialize. He played less than 50 games.

We also had a phenom that we paid $30M in matching tax that was being groomed to play 3B. A natural 2B but that position was blocked by Pedroia. Moncada later got traded to White Sox when DD decided Devers was the better option at 3B.

Red Sox had bet $90M on an over weight no talent 3B. Sox were determined to get some value out of it. Nope. No go.

It was perfect storm that took Shaw to Milwaukee.

Who knew Shaw would hit over 60 home runs in 2017/2018?

One could argue it was perfect storms that we traded Espinoza and Kopech before they needed TJ surgery.

There's a lot of luck factor in so many of these transactions.

We got the reverse end of it with Smith and Thornburg.

So, Severino & CC start out on the DL.

Didi is out for months and may never be the same.

They knight in shiny armor, Paxton, never plays a full season.

Yet, we are the ones who need to fear injuries.

Don’t forget ellsbury, the human banana and training room staple. Plus...

Isn’t it rumored that Tanaka pitched with a partially torn UCL last season?

Monday's mail delivered my tickets to the Sunday afternoon game between the Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners on March 31.:)

The Sox should have four regular-season games under their belts by the end of the month.

??? CC is just missing his first start because of suspension, right?

The Yankees are holding him back until they need a fifth starter because he is coming off heart and knee surgeries...

They need a starter to get them up to 4, but they have other internal options (Cessa, Loasigia, German) who aren’t coming off multiple surgeries this off-season.

And hey, Keuchel and Gio Gonzalez still need jobs ...
