Top 3 WAR in 2018 was Merrifield, Altuve and Lowrie.

Lowrie has an up and down career and won't have a WAR above 4 this year. I think Merrifield will play more like 2017, still good but not great. Altuve is better than Pedroia for sure. When Pedroia has a resurgent season, the Sox fans are going to hammer that vote in the ballot box. Will he start the game? Not sure. Will he be on the field at some point, most definitely.

Lowrie has been 4+ WAR batting the past two seasons, Merrifield's 2017 produced 3.8 WAR batting. I highly doubt pedroia comes anywhere near those numbers. Heck, I'm not even sure he surpasses Torres' 2.9 WAR from last year.

It’s a safe bet Lowrie won’t make 2b over Pedroia for the AL All Star team regardless, as he is now in the NL and switching to 3b...

Understood, but my point remains the same. At this point it's hard to count on pedroia generating a WAR in that vicinity.

Although since the AS game is a popularity contest it does give teams like the Yanks and the sox a distinct advantage.

In his last full season, he was worth 4.9 fWAR, so it’s not as outrageous as you imply. Really the biggest factor will be how much time he spends on the field...

Well that was a few seasons and a major injury ago.

Plus we can't forget moon's all important "age related decline"!!

And the Sox have handedly won the division the past 3 years. That hasn't prevented you from thinking the Yankees have some sort of chance.

I wonder if the Yanks will be battling the Rays for the wild card.

I didn't realize that the Yanks were coming off a major injury and were limited to 262 games the past 3 seasons ........

Not to mention the Yanks finished 2 games behind the sox in 2017, so yeah, they certainly had a chance.

And we advanced further in that season. The idea that the sox were other worldly better than us the past 2 years is false.

Sox nearly doubled the amount of runs the Yanks had in the ALDS and won the WS. I would posit that they were definitely other worldly better than the Yanks last year.

Whatever criteria they use. Dombrowski has said Swihart can compete for a starting catcher job. Presumably this means he can do something to win it...

You know as well as I do that it would be unwise to let a player win a starting job over the current starter based on spring training results. This is especially true if the 'losing' player is going to be traded.

By the sounds of it, Dombrowski's interpretation of who wins the job is the guy is gets the worst trade offers and doesn't get traded.

Pedroia is going to be ready and he'll be in the All Star game.

!!!

To quote Sale, "I dare you to count Pedroia out!"

Thanks Dave!

Yes, THANK YOU DAVE.

All 132 will play for a team WITHOUT the ring.

I will gladly take a bite out of my hat if Pedroia comes back and contributes in any kind of substantive way to the team this year.

Oh don't be sarcastic Nick - It happens all the time - teams consistently win the World Series or at least compete for it year in and year out and still have the most coveted prospects in the game. Now that is sarcasm! You can't please everybody unless you agree with them totally. o

Lets go DD.

At what position will the Sox be likely to see the biggest shift in player change in games started from 2018 to 2019- not counting pitching roles?

Catcher

78 Leon

66 Vazquez

14 Swihart

(If Vaz stays healthy, I could see this: Vaz 100, Leon 50, Swihart 12. +34 Vaz/ -28 Leon)

First Base

103 Moreland

25 Pearce

25 HRam

5 Swihart

3 Holt/ 1 Travis

(I could see this: 90 Moreland, 66 Pearce, 6 Swihart. +41 Pearce)

Second Base

70 Nunez

49 Holt

35 Kinsler

3 Phillips/3 Pedroia/2 Lin

(If Pedey is healthy, this would be the winner, maybe something like this: 130 Pedey, 16 Nunez, 16 Holt. If not, maybe this: Nunez 80, Holt 80, Lin 2. Holt +36)

Third Base

113 Devers

41 Nunez

4 Holt/2 Phillips/1 Swihart

(This could be the winner: Devers 152, Nunez 10. +39 Devers)

SS

134 Bogaerts

19 Holt

9 Lin

(Barring injury, not much change here: Bogey 152, Holt 5, Lin 5. +18 Bogey)

Left Field

123 Beni

32 JD

3 Travis/3 Holt/1 Swihart

(Little change: Beni 130, JD 32. +7 Beni)

Center Field

129 JBJ

19 Beni

13 Betts

1 Lin

(Some change: JBJ 142, Beni 12, Betts 8. JBJ +13)

Right Field

115 Betts

25 JD

10 Swihart

8 JBJ

4 Holt

(Maybe this: Betts 144, JD 18. +29 Betts)

Total OF:

142 Beni

137 JBJ

128 Betts

57 JD

11 Swihart/ 7 Holt/ 3 Travis/ 1 Lin

2019: (Doesn't match with my above projectsions)

152 Beni

152 Betts

142 JBJ

40 JD

Your thoughts?

+??? Pedey

+41 Pearce 1B

+39 Devers 3B

+36 Holt 2b (assuming no Pedey)

+34 Vaz C

+24 Betts OF

+18 Bogey SS

+10 Beni OF

-31 Nunez 3B

-28 Leon C

-17 JD OF

Assuming good general health by all.

Realiistically, Pedroia who turns 36 this August and will be returning after a full year layoff and having returned from microfracture surgery, will be played in 100 games or less this season. That will depend on him being able to return to some sort of positive hitting form, not an easy thing to do. He has always had the kind of spunk to give it his best shot but in my mind the odds are stacked against him. Hope I am proven wrong in my view.

And without the bullet Lincoln had a great night at the theatre.......

It's been obvious for a long time that you are not the brightest candle on the cake but your reply really reinforces it. It doesn't make any sense relative to my statement.

You should probably pay heed to another quote commonly attributed to Lincoln .......

"it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt"

Whatever helps you sleep at night.

It has nothing to do with sleeping at night.

In 2017 the sox won the division by two games, and it wasn't decided until the last week.

That certainly wasn't "handedly" winning the division and the Yanks certainly had a chance.

Spin it however you like if it makes you feel better.

They were up by 5 with 6 to go, but yes, the Yanks had a chance until near the end of the season.

soxprospects.com...

With Dustin Pedroia coming back from injury, second base is one of the few starting positions that is a question mark for the Red Sox. Chavis confirmed to Christopher Smith of Masslive.com that he has been working out at second base. Chavis also revealed that he is down 14 pounds from last year, and the increased mobility will help him if he does have to play the middle infield.
