Nunez playing 3rd works for me. He's a completely different player at 3rd than he is at 2nd. This move can only strengthen the SOX infield defense.

Yup.

Have to wonder about where this leave Holt.

Maybe going back to a part time roll will allow him to finish the season in a productive fashion. Then again, he could struggle with not having enough at bats.

Kinsler is in decline since 2016. He is now a .230+ hitter with a meh OBP and some pop.

I hope that he fits in in the clubhouse. You never know. I don't want anything f***ing with this team.

I bet he is pumped about playing for a WS contender. He had better be!

Phillips is hitting like .230 in the minors and hurt his hand... Kinsler has been a 2.5 WAR player this year in MLB with elite defense...
And Kinsler has been much improved offensively in the last month.

I'm sure he'll fit well in the SOX clubhouse. He plays hard and knows how to win. He and Pedey are the same age, in fact, they were teammates in college. With Pedey's future uncertain, this may turn out to be more than a rental.

This trade for Kinsler pretty much confirms that the Sox do not even consider Pedroia a long shot to return. Kinsler will be a rental and average at that. Not that Nunez doesn't need some rest, but he was one of the winners in the 2-1 over Phillies. Good for him.
The Red Sox website had listed his return as September. Now it says "possible 2018". I think that he is toast.

All I can say is "WOW!"

It may be a bit of an overpay, but really it was not bad.

We traded our #19 and #26 prospect from a lowly rated system.

I love the move, and I didn't even think 2B was as high a priority as some did.

Kinsler is still a plus defender, and he should still have some juice in his bat. He hit 22 HRs last year and is on pace for about the same this year. He's warmed up lately and could be helped by Fenway.

Nice job, DD.

He improves the defense A LOT, is a great teammate, and has solid pop He'll be an excellent bottom of the order bat. I really like this move.

Okay guys, seriously stop with the political comments, we don't need that s*** on a baseball forum. Its been asked numerous times by YOTN. This is the last time were gonna warn yall.

The Sox gave up a couple of guys they won't miss. It is probably the cost of Anaheim eating some of Kinsler's money. Once Philips got hurt (and even if he didn't) contingencies for 2B were thin. If Kinsler doesn't work out - the Sox can probably fake it with Nunez and Holt anyway. But Kinsler clearly has much more upside than those guys.

Just a smart low key move for Dombrowski.

I'm happy with Kinsler but you can't trade away Ty Buttrey. I had big plans for Buttrey--600 saves, a Cy Young award, a HOF speech. NO!

I'm thinking the Red Sox have not gone past the highest luxury tax limit. If they were already past it, why get the Angels to throw in money?

This is a solid get for the Sox. Kinsler may not be the offensive force of his youth, but he stabilizes what had been a black hole on your squad with top end defense. Nunez was worth -0.3 WAR per fangraphs and has been producing abysmal defense at a premium defensive position. He also brings veteran leadership as well as some speed on the bases and right handed power to the position.

This is a very Yankees circa early 2000s move. Shore up a position with an aging vet capable of at the very least providing good D hoping the change of scenery squeezes out one last productive spurt offensively. The price was minimal

Gotta say, I like this too. An up-the-middle defense upgrade in a pennant race and inevitable post season run. This is yet another solid move by DD. I was hearing rumors of Beltre for 3B (I’d have welcomed that as well), but I think this is better considering the position itself.

Dave isn’t done. With Devers down and still not performing, it is still possible Beltre is shaken free. Beltre said he wanted to go to Boston. Clearly the upper salary limit is not stopping Dave. Beltre is a FA after the season as well and the Rangers aren’t in it. It makes sense for them to get something for him

I was one of those who hoped for a strengthening up of our infield who had reached the point of playing both Nunez and Holt every day. I saw that as one injury away from a serious problem. Kinsler is an excellent move and may still keep us away from the second tier of the luxury tax limit. Others will report on that. He is a pro with good defense and is a professional hitter. Good move. I would have preferred a younger long term solution to second but that can happen at another time.

Williams Jerez and Ty Buttrey going to LA. That is quite an overpay.

A converted OF who is still a project as a RP and a RP that has a history of not finding the strike zone is an overpay?

Stupid move. Is he that much better than what Philips could give? There goes two more chips that could have been used for a reliever.

Yes, he's better than 656 OPS in AAA Brandon Phillips.

I don't see how it's an "overpay"...you're going to have to give up something, even for a rental, and we're not really hurting for guys with middle relief potential.

I've been asking for an upgrade at 2B, and I like this one a lot. Nice move.

Nor should it - if Henry is willing to pay whooppee ... and the draft pick penalty is essentially nil. (the marginal difference between picks 30 and 40 is almost zero). I think the price has to be right though - and Dombrowski clearly believes in Devers.

This is not an overpay. This was salary relief for Anaheim with them getting something tangible. Both guys they gave up have good stuff but poor location. They're a dime a dozen.

Anaheim picked up a portion of Kinsler's salary - the Red Sox had to give them bodies for Anaheim to do that. It makes perfect sense.

Another quality player. What I like about about Dombrowski is that he goes after quality. Not looking to catch lightning in the proverbial bottle. When Devers returns , we will need to decide if we want a four man bench or thirteen pitchers. Until rosters expand anyway.

He's right. We're talking about midtier prospects in a shattered system. Both of the guys we gave up are entirely replaceable, and the Angels, who have a much weaker pitching staff, might be interested in them as projects.

I honestly thought when I thought when we brought in Kinsler that we'd had to give up something good, like Mike Shawaryn or CJ Chatham, guys with a high likelihood of MLB utility, if not stardom. Both Buttrey and Jerez strike me as bullpen filler guys, which we really don't even need since we already have more bullpen filler than bullpen slots right now.

In other words, they were redundant scraps and we gave them to a team that needed them more than we did, for a guy we did need. Good trade DD.

Holt or Nunez in a Trade? Cant have all these utility guys.

Even if assuming Pedroia is done AND assuming the Sox go with a 12 man pitching staff, what do they do when Vasquez and Devers are ready to come back? They need Pearce to back up 1st, Swihart looks like he is making himself too valuable to release, they can put Holt in AAA, they can release Nunez even though they have him for cheap next year, or they can put Devers in AAA and stunt his growth like they did Bogaerts when the just had to have Stephen Drew in 2014.
