That could be, but I can't see a game changer type starter coming through the door. I don't see the Sox acquiring any starter that would be good enough to supplant Sale, Porcello, or Price as the top 3. It seems like if we do get a starter, it will be James Shields type, although they don't call him Big Game James for nothing. LOL

It doesn't appear that the nickname 'BIG GAME' will ever be used to describe Price.

1. There is no rhyme.

2. Given the way he has pitched from the bullpen in the postseason, he might be known as Big Save Dave one day...

His dog Astro is so embarrassed by his performance he is thinking of changing dugouts during the game if the Sox play Houston in the playoffs.

I still like trotting Price out to the hill every 5 days. Everyone is jumping on him, but he has put up 10 wins. I understand that wins is not a great barometer of performance. However, it is a good barometer for knowing your team’s chance of winning when he takes the hill and I like that win ratio. He had a couple of really bad outings, but he also had a long string of very good outings. Now that I have thrown in on Price’s behalf, he will probably get blown up tonight. LOL!

I hope Price kicks Ass.

I think Cora is "hoping" he can manage Price around the upcoming yankee series with a three man staff that Price happens to be one of.

I agree with you. I think Price has pitched better, on the whole, than he is given credit for. I think he gets a lot of criticism because he hasn't pitched up to the fans' expectations of being an ace. The team is 13-6 in his starts, a .684 win %, which is pretty darn good.

Hate on Price all you want, it's obvious he isn't living up to the hype, but he IS on pace to put up about 220 IP. That counts for something. He may not give the best performances, but he tends to hang in there and chew up some innings. That's often all this offense needs.

I think the ability to give a team innings is often underrated or overlooked. It's the same deal with Porcello. Often times, even when those guys are struggling, they will give you 6+ innings.

I'm sure every pitcher's numbers look much better when you take away their worst 2-4 games, but here are Price's numbers:

Team record: 14-6

Games with 5 IP & 0-2 ER/ 6 IP 0-3 ER and 7.2 IP 0-4 ER: 15 out of 20

Minus 2 worst games: 3.01 ERA (37 ER/107.1 IP)

Minus 4 worst games: 2.50 ERA (28 ER/ 100.2 IP)

I don't hate on him, I'm more like 'fingers crossed' when he pitches, regarding his health and effectiveness. Last night was great news on both counts.

With ERA, I think it would be fair to throw out the worst 2 games, but you probably also have to throw out the 2 best if you're going to do that.

Oddly enough both Porcello and Lester were charged with 8 runs in their most recent game. Each saw their ERA go up about 55 points.

I worry about his health too, but when healthy he is a pretty good guy to roll out there every 5th day even though he doesn’t throw 97-98 anymore. I think that between his 92-93, his command and his experience that he is still very good. There will be the occasional game that he will not have command where he will get blown up. If he remains healthy, I think he will put up close to 200 innings and he will finish with an ERA under 4.

As long as you do the same for all SP'ers the numbers would be fairly comparable.

It wouldn't seem fair to minus a 9 IP 0 ER from one guy and a 7 IP 0 ER from another., when the point of the argument is how well someone does in all but 2 of a pitcher's starts.

This is exactly how I approach his starts too.

If he stays healthy, there's a good chance he can do what you said from here until 2022. He's got the ability and the experience.

What is it that you want me to see in this graph?

Just offering some data on Price's velocity.

It shows your point is valid. He was around 94-97 in 2011 and 2012 but has been around 91-94 since joining the Sox.

I wasn't trying to disagree with you.

I didn't think that you were trying to disagree with me, and I wasn't being snarky. I just have very bad eyes when it comes to reading. My progressive lenses don't do a good job. Most of the day I am posting on my phone and it is hard for me to just read the posts. Charts and graphs are particularly difficult for me to view on the phone which is why I asked the question.

My eyes are bad, too, hence the bold print.

I didn't think you were being snarky, but I wondered, if you felt I was trying to make a counter argument with the graphs.

For sure.

With no Sox fans near me, this is the best I can get.
