Hope is never a good strategy!

In this case, his good seasons aren't that far back in the rear view mirror.

Hate to do this but including his Boston starts and Pawtucket starts Pom, has surrendered 16 HRS in 60 innings, this year.

John Wasdin comes to mind when I see this.

Hope is never a good strategy!

Neither is basing your decisions solely on what a player has done in his most recent sa

mple size.

Obviously the hope is that Pom can return to 2016-2017 form. No player is destined to stay as bad or as good as their most recent sample size.

Since Pom has a lot of pen experience in his career, and Johnson has been doing very well as a starter, I'd make Pom earn a slot in the rotation by showing something positive from the pen.

In theory, I think Eovaldi buys us a couple more Pom starts. But that’s all i’d give him. Two starts at the most to prove himself. Tgen Johnson’s our fall back.

To make room on the roster for Eovaldi, Boston optioned right-hander Brandon Workman to Triple-A Pawtucket. He is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA in 21 appearances for Boston this year.

“He wasn’t too thrilled about it, which I understand,” Cora said. “He’ll be back. I don’t know how soon, but he’ll be back.”

I really like Workman on this team. Really a shame.

Is there any team out there that needs RP'er depth in exchange for one better RP'er? Maybe a three way trade?

We trade Hembree and Scott for a prospect and then flip the prospect while adding one of our own for a better RP'er.

That still wouldn't help Workman remain on the 25.

Workman is more deserving than Tyler Thornburg. I made a new thread for relief pitching discussions.

Maybe this is an oversimplification, but it seems like we have several "deserving" RP'ers, that other teams would like to have, but none fill the role we need most- a high quality set up man.

We have a bit of a quandary. One strength is pen depth while we need a higher quality pen arm.

Quantity for quality is not an easy trade to orchestrate, even with a third team being involved.

Seriously? You haven't seen enough? Pomeranz has sucked all year long and has lost velocity on his already underwhelming fastball. Johnson is at 3.45/129-as our #5 SP. I believe that roster spots should be assigned by merit alone. As I wrote elsewhere, Johnson has earned a spot in the rotation. Pomeranz has earned a demotion.

Here is a good read on the subject:

I know how poorly Pom has pitched and how well Johnson has pitched. Johnson has certainly earned the spot in the rotation based on performance. That said, the Sox have to determine if there is any chance that Pom can return to last year's form. It's in the best interest of the team. Patience.

Well next start against Philly not a bad team, he keeps serving up HRS, that's a bad trend, and a very bad trend for a Reliever. Well see I guess. Including Pawtucket starts, 9 HRS, in 23 innings.

I would not give Pom a very long leash.

Such is the life of a player with options.

Maybe so but his FB is a thing of the past with no evidence of it returning anytime soon.

I do understand why the Sox won't quit on the guy easily.

But there comes a point when even dumb people see obvious things clearly.

Well, except for trump cultists.

2 more starts seems fair.

1 inning bullpen appearances against the bottom third of the order seems fair. Except he will be competing with Joe Kelly for those situations.

Per MLBTR, the Sox have shown a mild interest in Joey Gallo. While I get the appeal of the dirt cheap young slugger with a pure Fenway swing, it does make me wonder that if they could get him, where would he play this year?

We can still get a rental reliever. Even better if we get one with at least one more year of control. If our luck holds, maybe we could get a younger second baseman, even if he is just a solid prospect. We shouldn't go much longer with Holt, Nunez and Lin as our primaries, and maybe Pedroia, but those are questionable. It might be worth going over the Luxury Tax Limit second tier if we could get a solid second baseman with control going forward.

Two prime Brian Dozier landing spots came off the board when the #Dbacks picked up Escobar and #Brewers traded for Moustakas. #RedSox have been mentioned as a possibility because of Pedroia's health, but Boston's focus remains the bullpen. Dozier to Boston "highly unlikely.''

Meh.

More than likely we just get s rental 2B (who is clearly not Brian Dozier) due to the price tag.

At this point, the lack of rumors makes me think Holt and/or Nunez is the plan for the rest of the year. Sure it can be improved upon, but the situation isn’t dire IMO...

Just what we need, a .220 hitter with a God complex who thinks how his hair "flows" while he is running is more important than hustling.

Harper would irritate a clubhouse of just two guys. Himself and anyone else.

Dozier would be low on my list anyway. I would prefer Schoop from the Orioles and there may be better but we would have to reach.

I agree with you.

And I don't think the Sox will replace Pedroia until he retires or fails to play well in Spring Training 2019.

To pay the second tier taxes and penalties for a 2nd baseman now would be dumb. I think Holt will do okay for now.

Unfortunately, Pedroia is toast. We should not be counting on him for anything in the future. IMO he should retire to save his knee the additional wear and tear it will be exposed to trying to play baseball.

The next team that gets Harper should hire Papelbon as Bryce's personal motivational coach. :D
