OK. i'm going to say it.....DD needs to get us a second baseman before the deadline.

I 100% do not believe Pedroia will be back this season and whatever does come back will not be the Pedroia we remember.

I 100% do not believe we should have Holt/Nunez as the fulltime 2b tandem. i dont care so much about the offense stats. it's the D.

our window is NOW. the Cliff is real.

DD - git R dun

If Pedroia cannot come back, or comes back as only a shell of his former self, then Dombrowski will very likely need to get an everyday 2B. I don't think that call needs to be made right now though. Fortunately, the Sox are in good shape standings wise and there is still plenty of time before the deadline.

The days of buying Indulgences are long gone.
He did much more than other team owners did to support and further worthy causes, while his sins were comparable to those of every other owner.

The Red Sox acquired outfielder Eric Filia to complete the Roenis Elias trade:

The nearly 26-year-old Filia, perhaps my favorite Seattle prospect, led UCLA to the NCAA title as a sophomore before a suspension for plagiarizing a philosophy paper. Filia, who was the 2017 Arizona Fall League batting champ, recently completed a 50-game suspension for testing positive a second time for a drug of abuse.

The guy can flat out hit.

If baseball doesn't work out for him, then plagiarism is a resume enhancer if he wants to get a job at the Globe.

1B RF with zero power priceless!

I don’t think there is any reason that pedroia should not be able to come back and be effective, once the knee is completely healthy.

If he has not damaged anything by coming back too soon, he should be fine!

It's a very difficult injury to return from. That's one reason.

I'm optimistic, but I realize, there's a significant chance he never returns close to form.

The only way pedroia comes back at a pre injury level is if he visits Andy pettitte’s doctor....

Even 80-90% will be an improvement over Nunez so far this year.

Looks like Carson Smith is toast. MLB reports...

Red Sox reliever Carson Smith is set to undergo shoulder surgery tomorrow, the team announced to reporters (Twitter link via Rob Bradford of WEEI.com). The operation will likely put an end to the 28-year-old’s season.

It’s the latest setback in what is becoming an increasingly injury-plagued career for CarsonSmith, who missed the majority of the 2016 and 2017 seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery. Tomorrow’s surgery will repair a subluxation in his throwing shoulder, which the right-hander reportedly incurred after angrily tossing his glove out of frustration following a poor outing last month. However, there’s additional damage in his shoulder, it seems, as head athletic trainer Brad Pearson tells reporters that Smith also has some tearing in the labrum (Twitter link via the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier).

trading Elias was the priceless part!

Lefthander Roenis Elias, who has surrendered one run in six innings with the Mariners on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk, may replace Felix Hernandez in the Seattle rotation for the Red Sox series.

The Red Sox are a modest 8-7 against lefthanded starters (and 38-15 against righties).

More on Eric Filia:

Man what a disaster Smith turned out to be. But given the performance of the bullpen I'm not sure he would have had much of a role anyway.

i dont think nunie is the answer this season for fulltime 2b for a championship run. i believe he is still injured.

Holt can be ok, but would need a super utility guy on the bench.

Filia was an excellent pick-up yesterday by DD. Perfect Game has him rated a lot higher than he went in the Draft. Should be with Pawsox this week.

Filia reminds me of Mike Ford for us. A guy who killed levels when he was older than them and had insane OBP skills who didn't translate when given a chance at the big show. A lot of guys are like that. If he truly is one of the rare late bloomers, then its a steal. Most of these guys end up being AAAA fodder

Cora doesnt think so. otherwise he would have started Holt at 2b 2 nights ago vs the righty?

I think he just likes Nunez.

You need org guys too.

Absolutely. Org guys can push the other guys in your system with higher potential

Mostly they buy the higher potential prospects time by taking the occasional call up.

That and they have falling spring training numbers that make fans feel they have true potential.

Now Filia might be a legit prospect. But a huge part of me thinks that if he wad, DiPoto might not have parted with him so quickly. ..

The more optimistic comp for an older player in the minors might be Daniel Nava or Matt Carpenter. ..

yup. but this goes back to my original observation/problem:

I would like Xander Bogaerts to be the Red Sox starting shortstop for the next 10 years. Just a rock solid all around player who can get even better.

The weird thing is, his defense has not improved at all.

I'm not sure we can suddenly expect growth in that area.

I do think he can and will become a better hitter- assuming he stays healthy.
