He is playing rehab games this thursday and join the team when they return from North of the border.

It's mind-boggling to think anyone can return from a bone fracture that quickly.

Duct tape, man. Get yourself a role. Possibilities are near endless.

Pro athletes aren't like the rest of us. First, they are young. More importantly, when injured, they have access to the most advanced treatments, therapies, etc available and can spend all the time needed to pursue those therapies. The rest of us have to fit stuff around a job; undergoing treatment becomes their job.

I would think a lot depends on the fracture itself also.

A small crack is going to heal quicker than a major break.

I was in a missile unit once, and we called it missile tape, but in fact it was duct tape.

And they're already up 3-0 in the first. Yuck.

I turned the game off when the Yankees scored 2 in the first.

When the Yanks and the Twins are scheduled to play, the Twins should just forfeit and give the Yankees 3 wins. It would save everybody a lot of time.

Red Sox catchers rank last in OPS.

I'm not complaining, just sharing this little tidbit.

Actually, I'm okay with that.

You can be okay with that, but wouldn't you feel better if they were average or better than average?

Not if it comes at the expense of their defense.

Of course I'd be thrilled if Vaz and Leon started hitting better.

I would not be thrilled to have a better hitting catcher who stinks on defense.

Theo says that Big Papi asked to be traded once and that he almost signed Madden instead of Tito.

Three World Series rings and more than 500 homers later, it's hard to imagine the Red Sox once agonized over whether to play David Ortiz or Shea Hillenbrand. But that was exactly the debate in Boston's front office during the 2003 season. Ortiz had been signed in January after the Twins

Perfectly worded.

And while JBJ is a better CF'er than either of our catchers are at their position we have an entire thread dedicated to whether we should be trading JBJ. Go figure,

Catcher defense involves more than throwing out base runners, blocking balls in the dirt and occaisonal plays around the plate. To me, getting the most out of your staff is very important but hard to quantify. I like what Vaz & Leon give us behind the plate, but the way Moreland & HRam are doing at 1B, and JBJ over .680, I can see how someone might see our catchers as our weakest position overall.

Good hitting catchers who also can hit don't grow on trees and I am hoping that Vaz will get going at the plate. Don't believe Leon will but stranger things have happened. If I was in the Red Sox front office I would look at the FA catcher market with an eye to improving our strength there. Don't believe it is a critical need, but one where we definitly could improve.

Our offense at catcher is not an issue, because our run prevention has been tremendous and we have plenty of other guys who can hit.

Also, Leon will not end up hitting .100 for the year.

I agree with you of course. I didn't assume that you were talking about any kind of defensive trade off. These two guys we have are both good catchers unfortunately right now they are barely hitting at all.

I don't think fangraphs or anybody else I know does a very good job quantifying catcher defense, but for what it's worth, they have the Sox team catching defense ranked 23rd at +0.7. For some perspective, over 1/4th of ML teams are above 2.6.

One could argue our catcher defense isn't as good as we think it is, but I disagree.

Our catcher WAR ranks 30th at -0.6, which is 0.3 away from 29th place. O.3 is enough to move a team from 21st to 10th.

our .434 catcher OPS is more than 100 points away from 25th place and about 200 points away from the team mean of .631.

Other positions:

RF 1.138 RF- 1st place

SS .906- 4th place (even with Bogey out)

1B .871-6th place

DH .830- 2nd place

LF .786- 6th place

3B .779- 11th place

2B .773- 11th place

CF .699- 16th place (surprisingly about average)

We place here in WAR:

1st: DH

2nd: RF

5th: SS & 1B

8th: LF

15th: 3B & 2B

17th: CF

30th: C

@ClearTheBases

From today's #RedSox media notes: "Red Sox rank 1st in the majors in win % (.773, 17-5), run differential (+63), and fielding % (.994)...Also ranks 3rd in runs per game (5.77) and is tied for 2nd in ERA (2.80)."

But they haven't won since last Friday!
