Timetable for Pedroia's Return

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will sit out some of 2018 after undergoing left knee surgery in October, but there’s hope he won’t miss much time. As per his rehab schedule, Pedroia is lining up for a late-April or early May return, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe estimates. Pedroia told Cafado that he hasn’t suffered any setbacks in his rehab, adding that his “knee has responded well” to running and strength exercises. After roughly six more weeks of running and then, as Cafardo writes, “a period of agility work,” Pedroia will be able to start baseball activities. The 34-year-old franchise stalwart also explained to Cafardo that knee problems weighed on him both physically and mentally in 2017, when he appeared in just 105 games, but he’s currently pain-free.

I am going with June as well, allowing for no setbacks. You cannot rush this type of procedure. If you do, swelling ensues and it becomes a failed procedure

Pedroia thinks that he will be ready by Opening Day, but he has always be overly aggressive.

 

The team says that he will be ready by the end of May, but I think they tend to be conservative to lower expectations.

I don't know if he will retire by then but my educated guess is that he will not finish the season on the field.

 

Those wheels are f***ed. Each boo-boo adds up and things really start to hurt at his age from what I recall.

I think he can finish the season on the field, but I think Cora will have to manage his playing time very carefully.

Manage his time means time off the field. He can't be of much use from the bench.

It means giving him a day off more often than he's had in the past, but it doesn't mean he'll be a bench player. I'd rather Pedroia take a day off here and there and be able to get through the season in pretty good health, than try to play almost everyday and be done in August.

Well, a lot of Pedroia's issues are contact related (with the ground, a cleat, a base, etc.). I'm not sure resting Pedroia will prevent him from hurting himself while diving for a ball.

Sure, but it's not uncommon for guys coming off surgery to have some extra rest days either. I'm sure our crack medical staff will figure it out!

Sure, he's going to get more rest days going forward. I'm not sure it will be more likely to prevent him from getting injured though.

I don't give a rip when he comes back if he's not healed completely ...Sorry but Pedey is reminding me of a scrappy player who just can never stay healthy than rushes back time and time again ...Let the Chavis time start next year ....maybe even September if Pedey is once again dinged up like he always is .

Chavis can barely handle 3B and you want to move him to a position that requires more mobility?

 

Dombrowski did buy Pedroia more recovery time this week by signing Nunez, so this is no longer the issue it has been all off-season...

Let's hope that our crackerjack medical team gave him a thorough exam and that Nunez will be healthy to start the season. It wouldn't be the first time that we signed a wounded duck.

I have not heard anything new about this "signing". Has he taken the physical? If so, I hope they took lots of advanced images of his f***ed-up knee and that someone competent reviewed them.

 

If he does pass or has passed the physical, is he ready to start camp and participate in normal ST activities right away? He was still rehabbing in December so it could reasonably be assumed that he is not ready yet.

 

If that knee is not ready to go now I say pass on Nunez. We need a healthy bat and placeholder for Pedroia now.

Reportedly, the deal has a player option for the 2nd year, with a buyout, so it essentially becomes a 2 year deal. No word yet on the dollar amount.

Micro fracture surgery .....for any athelete is pretty much the kiss of death for mobility cutting ,jumping ,pivoting like he was use to doing .I love Pedey he's a legend ....his time as an elite player has been over awhile now ...this puts an explanation point on an amazing player and career .

Really? Micro fracture surgery is drastic, but guys have come back from it. Maybe not 100 percent, but 95 percent of pedroia is still a pretty good second basemen.
