Ockimey with his first triple a tater today.

Shawaryn ran into some trouble the second time through the lineup.

Ended up giving up 4 runs in 6.1 innings.

Again, thanks for the updates Larry.

Hernandez, Chavis and Ockimey are definitely getting protected.

Agreed.

We have these possible openings on the 40 man roster due to impending free agency:

Kimbrel

Pomeranz

Pearce

Eovaldi

Kelly

Kinsler

Here are some bubble players currently on our 40 man roster:

Chandler Shepherd

Austin Maddox

William Cuevas

Sam Travis

Justin Haley

Marcus Walden

Bobby Poyner

Pedroia (retirement?)

1 from Vaz/Leon/Swihart (all out of options)

Marco Hernandez

Robby Scott

The hope is that he is just beginning to tap into his power potential. As many scouts say, power is often the last tool to develop.

He looks like a high strikeout guy, but this will be balanced somewhat by his high walk totals, a nice aspect of his offensive game.

Still better than carrying a rando reliever. Need high upside bats in the upper minors.

Ockimey and to a lesser extent Travis and Chavis have until Moreland's contract expires after 2019 to show they belong in the bigs. For all of them, that's enough time, barring injury. It would be great to be able to plug in a min contract into a big money position after 2019.

I would be very surprised if Travis remains on the 40 man after the season. He will be a minor league free agent--it appears he doesn't have the bat to be a major league player. Ockimey will definitely be protected. I wouldn't protect Chavis, get the PED guys off the roster and out of the farm system, but the Red Sox probably will protect him.

I agree on Travis.

I do think we'll have plenty of room for Chavis on the 40 man next year, at least to start the season.

It's no biggie to me, if he is traded. He is still our #1 prospect according to soxprospects.com... like him or not.

You evaluate Minor League Talent way more different than I do. A consistent .250 hitter in the Minors, is very rare they become .300 hitters in the Majors. High Strikeout guys in the Minors, will be higher K guys in the Majors. Important you follow the trend.

Since I saw Ockimey play, he has the talent, no doubt. Like him in fact. But his approach, because he's so young, is not good. Needs to mature at the plate. That's why I wanted him promoted a Month ago. Portland stinks, wanted him to learn against tougher Opponents. Best way to progress.

He's not so young anymore. He turns 23 this October. This is his 6th year in our system.

He was called "raw" for years. He hasn't shown much improvement with the K rate. He's rule 5 this winter and will likely be placed on our 40 man roster or traded, but the chances are, he won't every get over the high K rate. Some players can be successful in the bigs despite having high K rates, but he will have to show more power than he's shown so far. One thing in his favor has been his good OBP, which isn't always easily transferable to the bigs (see Cecchini).

Ockimey OBP

.370 AA 2018

.372 AA 2017

.388 A+ 2017

.367 A 2016

I agree that Ockimey will continue to strikeout in the majors. But he should continue to walk too. He has power, but needs to develop more power. That power could be right around the corner in his development.

Without looking at the numbers, I'm pretty sure A.Judge developed into a better major league player than his minor league numbers would suggest. This can happen when raw talent and potential becomes actual and sometimes that can happen at the major league level rather than the minor league level. The hope is that Ockimey at age 25 will be hitting more HRs than Ockimey at 21 or 22. I don't think that is a rare occurrence.

This was certainly true for Judge. The 25 years old Judge hit with more power than the 22 year old Judge.

Judge is a freakatoid. That kind of ML blossoming is pretty rare, except with players called up at very young ages with less than the 1500+ PAs Judge got on the farm before his call-up.

I'm not giving up on Ockimey. I've always valued him higher than Travis, but chances are he won't make it big.

I don't see Ockimey as a future star or middle of the order bat. But could he develop into a 20-25 HR first baseman with high on base percentage, a 6th hitter in the lineup? That would be a pretty good player especially during his controllable years. Edited by Fan_since_Boggs

More on next year's 40 man roster.

We currently have 44 players on the roster, counting 4 guys on the 60 day DL (Pedroia, M Hernandez, C Smith & A Maddox).

6 Free Agents or re-sign?

Kimbrel

Pomeranz

Pearce

Eovaldi

Kelly

Kinsler

One has to believe we either keep Kimbrel or replace him (and Kelly) with one or two very good RP'ers.

Starting the season without Pom & Eovaldi or any out-of-system replacement would be a gamble. No depth beyond Sale, Porcello, Price, ERod, Wright, Johnson & Velazquez.

It's hard to imagine not replacing Peacre with someone who can bash lefties.

Going without Kinsler or a replacement might be doable.

We've talked about the high probability of Ockimey, Chavis and H Hernandez being added to protect them from rule 5, so here is how i see the roster shaping up for next year (subject to change, of course):

Bubble = Red

9 Starting Pitchers:

Sale, Porcello, Price, ERod, Wright, Johnson, Velazquez

Haley, Shepherd

12 Relief Pitching (counting 1 signing):

______(Kimbrel), Thornburg, Barnes, Hembree, Brasier, C Smith, Workman, Poyner, Walden

R Scott, A Maddox, Cuevas

4 Catchers:

Vazquez, Leon, Swihart

Butler

3 First Base

Moreland, Ockimey

Travis

4 Second Base

Pedroia (retire?), Holt, Nunez

Renda

3 Third Base

Devers, M Hernandez, Chavis

2 Shortstop

Bogaerts, Lin

4 OF

Betts, Beni, JBJ, JD (DH)

There are 41 names on this list, including Kimbrel or his FA replacement.

Any signings would force a bubble player off the roster. Here are the bubble players I listed above:

Renda

Butler

Travis

Cuevas

Shepherd

Haley

Scott

Maddox

No big loss with any of these guys, IMO.

Houck not a great game, but not bad either. 5 IP, 6 Hits, 2 BB's, 8K's. 2 ER's. He's now thrown 107 innings. Lot of innings, maybe scale him back. Maybe 5 more starts for him, before season end. Edited by OH FOY!

Ockimey hit his 2nd for the PawSox, a 3 run HR, Dalbec got his 1st for Portland. 2 Run shot. Since Dalbec came up no Chavis. Hurt?

Denyi Reyes is Pitching for Salem so far so good, 2 hitter in the 3rd.

Not a bad 1st start for Reyes after promotion. 5.2 innings, 0 Runs, 5 hits, 1 BB's , 4 K's. If he wins he'll be 31-5 in 4 Minor League seasons, counting DSL, and GCL, with a 2.05 ERA in his career. Edited by OH FOY!

Glad they promoted him, you need that Month to move up, to see how he handles tougher Opponents. See where gets to the point, where he has to find that he might have to work on things.

I think Reyes is the Minor League Pitcher of the year, for the Sox.

Tobias not a big deal, 25 year old that got demoted back down to Salem from Portland.

Ockimey is just getting better and better. 1.152 OPS in AAA so far.

Dalbec is OPSing 1.657 in AA. He struggled getting to full health last year after breaking his wrist. If he finishes the season strong, does he become the #1 prospect?

Posted
Glad he is at Triple AAA, just played a couple of games, too early yet. Lets see. Same with Dalbec, but as soon as he got up, Chavis is sitting. Not even DH. Is he hurt?

I don't think Chavis deserves the #1 ranking and I'd move him past Groome and Casas for now. To me, it might be between Mata and Dalbec with Houck close by. Once Groome comes back, things might change.
