I'd be surprised if Machado gets dealt within the division, but if the O's are amenable to doing so, you guys could probably blow any offer of ours out of the water if you were so inclined...

They might get far more in the trade deadline when a team is desperate, that's the reason the Yankees got that package for Chapman. For now his trade value is very low.

I still think he will nab a top 100 prospect plus some high upside lower level guys. His theoretical worth would be higher because acquiring him now would allow the receiving team to get draft pick comp. Where the Orioles could really make their hay would be dealing to a contender at the deadline if they don't like the packages now. Think about it. Boston is 2 games behind NYY and leading the WC chase. The pitching has been off the charts but the hitting blows and they're desperate to deal. At the same time, Machado is back to 2016 form and tearing the cover off the ball. Maybe the return would be higher?

The Giants are going to need to either rebuild or gain offense. They tried for Ohtani and Stanton. They whiffed on both. Posey is in need of a move out from the C spot to stay healthy and Belt is blocking his usual path. Belt is being paid well. Pence is a shell of himself. Bumgarner missed time due to a stupid incident, but he is nails yet the rest of that rotation is utterly garbage. Their pen went to hell also. Heck, they were the worst team in baseball by 2 games. They would have needed 26 more wins to reach 90. It isn't like they were close. So if they think their window isn't closed, then yes, they will be going all in on JD. If they look in the mirror and see they need to sell assets, then we could have a heck of a firesale and it would guarantee JD lands in the bean

Yes, there is security in signing an extension now vs risking a serious 2018 injury or another "off year" like 2017.

Who knows what his free agent money would be, though. The 2017/2018 market hasn't been set yet, so any deal now isn't going to afford him the market to allow a window for extension talks. Also, a fair amount of teams are gearing up for next offseason. The extension talks could be obscene by then. You don't go to your final season saying youre going year to year and not complete the deal unless you are offered stupid money. Machado would need a 10 yr $350 mil offer to spurn FA and nobody is giving that to him

As moon just said, security is also a big pull. It might well be 10 years at $350m that gets it done. My bet would be you put 10 years at $300m in front of him and he says thanks very much.

Machado is a better fit for us than Stanton, but I agree, we aren't going to offer him $300M/10 to get him to say okay AND then give the O's the rest of our farm.

This is a results driven market. If the results are there on opening day, then the time the moves are made is irrelevant. The one thing DD has been tight lipped on is who his target is. We know he has one. We don't know if it is who we think it might be
