If the Sox optioned him he'd absolutely be claimed, people like chase d'arnaud and jumbo diaz get claimed and a guy 1 year removed from being an all star wouldn't?

I think we should give him play time, let him get in a hot streak, and trade him around deadline for either prospects, or pitching/3B help. I trust chris young way more than any 3b on our roster

We truly are back in 2015 except that we have seen that sometimes JBJ really can hit. Back then he couldn't hit spit in MLB until August of 2015. Whatever, the case for keeping him is a good one. He is a great back-up and should probably get one or more chances to start again.

True. It's not even that Ellsbury has been that bad, but to live up to a contract that massive he would have needed to repeat his MVP season like 3 times.

So you agree Ellsbury's contract is worse than Carl Crawford's?

I have to think two of the worst, if not the two flat out worst contracts of all time have to be Pablo Sandoval and Rusney Castillo. The Sox tied up about $140 mill in one player who can't crack the starting lineup over their utility infielders and another who can't crack the 40-man roster...

Carl Crawford's is worse than Ellsbury. At least Ellsbury plays and contributes a positive WAR. Crawford was absolutely awful in Boston in and LA.

Definitely a couple of beauties. I sometimes wonder if Cherington was a big advocate for Castillo and that's part of what got him dismissed.

FTR, if I had to guess, I'd say Ben is to blame for Castillo.

No way do I see Pablo as a Ben move.

Kind of blows my mind how much money we have sitting in AAA doing nothing with Castillo and Craig.........

I blame Lackey for half of that no matter what you all say...

Clearly, management read my post and decided to send JBJ out there tonight to take another shot. For the record, when JBJ finally started hitting in August 2015, I was astounded. I had no objection to giving him additional shots in Boston because of his defense, but didn't think he would hit. And right now I favor giving him a shot only because he still has some skills.

I also think we need to look at Castillo signing in the context of just a year before, we lost out on Jose Abreau to the White Sox. I believe we were just below what was offered. I got the feeling that we were NOT going to be outbid for Castillo. It just hasn't worked out.

Things to ponder.....

What if Kelly had progressed and followed many of young St Louis pitchers and had become lights out starter for the Red Sox?

What if A Craig had recovered fully from his injury plagued St. Louis season before the trade happened?

What if Castillo had followed the similar first year success of Jose Abreau?

What if Pablo had continued his limited success from the Giants to the Sox?

What if Carson Smith had continued his success from his previous year before the trade?

What if Moncada tore up the covers last September and it was Devers that was traded for Sale?

What if Thornburg is pitching the way he did last year?

What if I was worth millions and dating.........Yep I know, wishful thinking.

But there's no "take" at all in that article. Nor any suggestion of what the problem is or what the RS should do.

The coldest of takes.

What if the Twins never let Ortiz go?

If ifs and buts were candies and nuts...

Actually the best take on all this comes from Omar Khayyam:

"The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit

Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,

Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it."

I am a little more succinct and a bit crude:

If the Queen had balls she would be the King.

What if Posada had actually made good contact instead of being jammed by Pedro and ending up a hero? What if Mueller had hit the ball two feet to the right?

..and the king laughed, not because he wanted to but because he had two.

I think it is pretty straightforward. This is him - there will be streaks, good and bad. The defense will be marvelous - the throwing arm uncommonly excellent for the position. He is a starting caliber CF, which is intrinsically valuable. I do think he is outside of Devers the best trade chip the Sox have to pick up something more than say a back-end starter.

And even if she didn't, could she identify as a king?

Good point. We would probably have to call her King if that was one of her gender pronouns.

Fun with JBJ small sample sizes:

4/3-4/8 (beginning of season until going on DL) -- .286/.353/.429/.782 (17 PA)

4/21-5/5 (return from DL to being benched for several games) -- .140/.213/.209/.422 (47 PA)

5/9-5/24 (return from bench to present) -- .233/.313/.488/.801 (48 PA)

Well it's too late now!! His value has tanked!

If we had traded him at the end of last year we might actually have gotten VERY GOOD TALENT in return.

Last year his value was at his highest. It would have been best to move him on for a really good MLB ready 3rd baseman.

But nope. Now we have to let him find his bat again.

That's something the Sox struggle with at times is identifying when is the best time to move on from talent and get something great to very good in return.

They need to take a page from Bill Belichick. He moved on from Lawyer Milloy, Tebucky Jones, Logan Mankins, Chandler Jones, etc. at the right moment AND got some compensation in return.

Maybe its just me but I don't really care if JBJ struggles with the bat, what he brings defensively is just outstanding. There have actually been numerous articles about the bad luck he's been having offensively. He'll be fine and I still don't see a need to trade him. He's a good player.
