But at the same time, it was handled badly by Barnes, and I think that is what Pedroia's issue partially is. You don't under any circumstance throw at a guys head, especially with how hard Barnes throws. I don't like Machado but I don't want to see him seriously injured.

I agree 100% that Barnes should not have thrown near Machado's head.

Right now, Pedroia's reaction is not sitting well with me. However, we don't have the whole story. We don't know exactly what was said. I am sure that if his teammates feel like they were in any way thrown under the bus, Pedroia will atone for it.

As Bellhorn said, I just hope this doesn't become a huge controversy for the team.

five walks, I wouldn't trust him to connect.

That would be 12 walks in just 17 innings pitch on the sesaon. He has to stop walking and going 3-2 on every batters, these 5-6 innings are eating into that depleted bullpen.

Throwing a baseball at somebody head is never a good situation. I don't think he meant to. Just trying to hit him in the back. His s***** control is the probable reason that the pitch got away.

BTW, Abad made a rare appearance and quickly s*** the bed. Why is he still around? There seems to be more than just one Clay Buchholz around.

It will be interesting to see what Pedroia has to say.

Apparently Pedey and Machado are "friends" - whatever that means in this situation - and Pedey wanted to be sure Machado still likes him. Isn't that sweet? Ugh. This can't sit well with the clubhouse when they stick up for Pedey and he disavows any responsibility for what happened. (OK, maybe responsibility isn't the right word but he's involved in that thing someplace and he needs to acknowledge that rather than throw his teammates under the bus).

I appreciate Pedey's mature perspective, but if he thinks his friend would go into him spikes-high maybe he needs to hang out with a better class of people.

If Barnes gets suspended I have to imagine Abad is gone, you can't fill the suspended players roster spot and they can't go with only 3 righties. So a lefty will have to go. They can't afford to have both Scott and Abad on the team.

Agree. I didn't have a warm and fuzzy feeling when Abad came into the game. And my feeling was even worse when he left, except I was thinking that maybe this would be the LAST time I have to see him.

You don't want to hit a guy in the head. You could end his career and ruin his life.

You could end a guy's career hitting his knee too.

When was the last time someone died from it in an MLB game? Kids have had heart attacks getting hit in the chest too.

Ray Chapman I believe 1921, but something that should never be explored.

Remind me of the helmet he was wearing.

Really stupid to go at Machado's head. Makes the Sox look like bush league, especially since it was clearly intentional. The spiking was not intentional, which was obvious to anyone watching the innumerable replays. Machado was simply trying to beat the throw to 2b and he almost did. That's why Pedroia said right after the game he did not think that slide was a big deal. I'm with Pedroia on this one.

Are you really serious why put someone in that situation.

Going after Machado's head was stupid, also clearly intentional. Machado's slide was all about beating the throw to 2b, which he almost did and is why Pedroia said it was no big deal after the game. To me the Sox, especially Farrell and Barnes, look foolish.

People get hit in the head all the time, more often than people get spiked like that.

It takes one time, and the effects can linger over a long period of time. Couple examples Tony C. And Dickie Thon. I don't think Barnes threw at his head, I believe he tried to hit him and the ball got away from him. Most players I would hope don't have that sadistic streak.

I think he was trying to hit him, in no way do I believe he was aiming for the head.

Machado's foot was up and he stuck it right in Pedey's calf......... this isn't even questionable......

You can't take that kind of abuse so early in the season...... you either put up now or you get run over all year........

it would look a lot more foolish if they did nothing.......

I'm glad Farrell is angry....... he should be..... none of this is questionable.... if Balt wants to play that way the Sox need to answer in kind. We see them a lot in the next few months.

I'm glad no one got hurt, but I think we sent an appropriate message. That message being Barnes is a Psycho....

Yup... Sox came out of this one looking bad. Baseball brewhahas are always fun, but I sort of liked last year, seemed like our team were a bunch of choir boys. Machado is a well-documented punk, but his slide didn't seem that bad. His foot largely seemed to spike because it hit the bag, which propelled it upwards.

I don't see why Barnes would throw at Machado's head. It would make him a pariah around the league and make the Sox look (and be) the bad guys in this situation. So I assume he was aiming for his back at worst, and the pitch got away from him. Still... Sox not looking good on this one at all, in my opinion. And Pedroia is my favorite player, but I agree with others in this thread saying he threw his teammates and Farrell under the bus with his quotes. Bad situation all around.

And they didn't even leave a bruise on Machado!

Pedroia clearly didn't give a s*** about the slide and for some reason went out of his way to publicly show up the team when retaliation was attempted. I don't think Barnes intended to throw at Machado's head, but the Sox still come out looking like *******s here.

Whatever....great win!

Boy, we're going to disagree on this - on both counts!

I've watched that replay a dozen times and I'm still not convinced that Machado's front foot even touched the bag - and if it did it wasn't enough contact to alter the path of the leg. If one is going to believe that then they have to believe that Machado was trying to hit the very top edge of the bag - which is something a runner never does. Instead they aim for the front of the bag and use the leg to cushion their momentum upon contact. Machado's slide was calculated to take him across the bag to where Pedey was on the back side of that bag. The front side was completely open for Machado to approach it at either side and instead he chose to go for the spot that was directly in line with Pedey's leg and would take him over the bag. I thought it was a cheap shot at the time and I still do.

In addition, I refuse to believe that Barnes was deliberately throwing at Machado's head. If you watch his arm it looks like he was trying to come inside to hit Machado but he lost his release point and the ball got away from him and went up.

One problem with these situations is that part of the code is that you have to lie your ass off. Barnes can't come out and say he was trying to drill Machado in the chest but the pitch got away.

Baltimore threw at Mookie's head last year for hitting too many homeruns. f*** Machado. f*** the Orioles.

And Mookie will be the one to "pay" for this. He will get thrown at by some nobody on the O's staff at some point later this year. When that happens, benches need to empty and somebody needs to make a beeline straight to Showalter and pound the snot out of him.
