Don't know what was going on in Pedroia's head. But I assumed, given what he'd already said about the slide, and the fact that he and M. know each other, he was just saying something along the lines: "Hey, don't look at me. I'm over it. They're not." Not trying to throw them under the bus at all; maybe the opposite (We're teammates, and now you've got bigger troubles than just me?) Anyway. Guy slides. Guy gets pissed. Another guy gets pissed. Then another guy gets pissed and ... So it's probably useless to analyze this more precisely than that, since no one in these situations acts or speaks rationally.

I don't know if there was any intent behind Machado's slide other than breaking up the DP, but it was a late slide, which is a no no. The Red Sox needed to send a message. If nothing else, to get Machado to think twice before sliding late like that again.

 

I am still upset with Pedroia for not having his team's back when all of this was done to cover his back.

As tempting as it must have been to go after Machado in his next AB given the emotions at the time it probably would have resulted in a bench-clearing brawl and suspensions for a lot of Red Sox players.

 

IMO giving things a day or two to calm down and then making their statement probably wasn't the most emotionally satisfying way to handle it but it was the most prudent way.

 

Disclaimer: I wanted Kimbrel or Kelly to come in and stick a 110 mph fastball so far into Machado's ribs they'd have to take it out through his ******* - but at the same time I knew it wasn't the smart thing to do. But I WANTED it to happen anyway, LOL

In that way sure, I rather just lose Barnes for 4 games. I just don't like waiting until a players last AB in the series to retaliate, seems overly calculating to me with a hint of cowardice. Then again we weren't the antagonist in this situation, so I guess there's some freedom on how a team can deal with it. Pedroia is an emotional player, so I see his side of things too.

 

As far as revenge on the O's....Baltimore can be the kings of April all they want. I'm gonna laugh when Toronto overtakes them in the standings in two months.

This really sucks. I'm in Boston and the weather seems pretty bad all week. I have tickets for this series and the next against the Cubs. Tomo I'll go to the Celtics game. Hopefully the weather is better for Thursday, Friday and Saturday games.

I think the circumstances of the game have to be taken into account. The last game was more of a blowout at the time of the 'retaliation', which IMO, is a good time to do it.

You get to use the tickets on 7/16. Maybe try reaching out to the Sox and see if they can give you something else?
