Does anyone else think Hernandez has won the 3rd base job? What are they waiting for? I haven't seen enough of his 3rd base play to give hi, a grade, but I've seen enough to know he's a helluva a lot better than Pablo. (and Farrell pinch hitter Young tonight for Hernandex. Young is about 1 for 10 thie against lefties while Hernandez is about 3 for 10.

C'mon Man!

Young is a lefty killer when he gets going. He was slow to start last year too. And then he POUNDED lefties.

Pablo didn't play at all last year. I believe he will find his grove at some point. I think missing a year will make him take a while to get adjusted. I hope he gets adjusted. I know, it's frustrating...... but you have to give him time. Stations right though..... the clock is ticking...

Hernandez has a BABIP of .400, Pablo is hitting the ball really hard and is it .225.

Pablo is playing better than you think.

Hernandez can be primary IF backup.

Pablo's fielding to me is the bigger concern, if it does not improve I don't think Farrell is waiting until June. Last year he did it in spring training.

I'm pretty sure Hernandez hasn't "won" any starting jobs, and Sandoval, based on contract and career, will get more than a couple weeks to lose the jib, which, by the way, he is not in the process of doing just yet...

Hoooo.... boy! Four errors in 15 games may not solidify a person's being replaced, but it certainly is a start in the process.

Last year he weighed a ton. A good ball player does not need a momth to get his skill back on track. TW came back after WW2 and hit .400! Pablo can't move like a normal 3rd baseman should. I don't know about anyone else, but I've seen enough. I am also impressed with Hernandez.

I only have one eye, but it's a good one!

Managers typically give guys until June.

Inthis case, Pablo is fine.

His defense is certainly far from fine. He isn't worthy to send out to man 3B. His glove will never be fine.

My guess is Sox will take long and hard look at Pablo.

If and when he is replaced, that will be the end for him. There's also financial implications to consider.

IF HE DOES TURN IT ON, Sox would be wise to trade him, even if they have to eat bulk of his contract. I don't see any difference between him and say Marco.

Last night with nobody out with runners on corners, who would you rather have at bat? Most of us probably agree that Marco had better chance of making contact to drive in a run.

Don't get me wrong. I want him to succeed. But I just don't see a light in his tunnel.

MVP is probably right in that Pablow has until June. That is, of course, if he starts to produce more regularly.

I don't see him failing miserably until June, either. If he sucks hard for the next couple of weeks the Sox will make a move.

I have said this before, I think he has shown signs of life at the plate. Other than the misadventure of him batting from the right, he mostly "looks" like his swatting old self at the plate. He seems to make hard contact frequently, just not for hits.

His range, especially to the left, is disappointing if not unexpected. He is 3 years older that when he played decently in SF. His footwork appears decent but he makes many wild throws where he releases the ball early. That can be fixed. He is known to be a "hard worker" so I see no reason why he can not fix this aspect of his defense.

Of course the Sox need to suss him out thoroughly before replacing him.

I do like Hernandez, though.

Just a dumb signing that continues to look bad.

Good arguments on both sides. I don't like him because of his defense, but agree the smart move is to give him more time.

June is fine by me, but if he cannot bring up his BA from the current .214 then an alternative should be found.

Ugh. I didn't realize it was that bad.

Sandoval is being saved from release for two reasons. 1) For the amount of money they're paying him they'd like to see him succeed, and 2) there's no one to take his place. As much as I like Hernandez (Plan B) the FO seems unwilling to give him 3B and let him prove he can't play it with no Plan C in sight.

IMO #2 is a better reason than #1, but how long will they be willing to carry a guy who's making multiple errors and hitting around the Mendoza line hoping that both facets of his game will improve?

Is there anyone else on this team who could get away with that??

Hernandez has had only 79 major leagues ABm but his avg there is .291. His 2017 stats ar 28 AB, .286. Not bad! More importantly is his demeanor at hte plate. Aggressive enough, looks the pitches over pretty good. 3 for 10 against lefties. He didn't do it by making stupid swings and mistakes, (think Moncada)

I've been a huge Marco fan since day one of the trade, but I am not sure he is a plus defender at 3B at this moment. I guess you don't have to be a plus to still be better than Pablo on defense, but Pablo used to be a slight plus defender.

The sample size is still too small to make a clear and lasting evaluation, but Pablo better start showing improvement on defense or he may be looking at losing his job again.

I'm not as worried about his offense, especially if they do like they should have since day one: platoon him or at least demand he give up switch-hitting.

Patience people. It's only been 3 weeks.

We don't want the FO having the "sense of urgency" that they had last season, which led to some rash moves.

They won the Division last year.

Pablo is now 2-14 from right side. Isn't 'insanity' doing the same thing and expecting different results?

Just throwing away at bats.......team that came up with six singles last night can't afford to have a big black hole in the lineup.

There is one thing consistent about him though....he swings at anything from either side of the plate. Ben Cherington gave him $95M.

Ridiculously bad signing.

I am willing to watch him until June but after that he sits. I'd much rather put my trust in Hernandez or Rutledge. Or even the noodle bat Merrero. At least we know he has an outstanding glove.

I agree. June sounds about right, but if he keeps making 4 errors every 3 weeks and stays around .210, we may see a change by mid May.

I never have understood why they keep starting him vs lefties.

He's barely proven he can hit righties enough to start over the last 3-4 years.

He was a 2 WAR player 4 years ago, 2.9 3 years ago. Stop making s*** up.

His offensive numbers were in decline each of his last three years in SF.

How does WAR reflect those numbers?

We play game 19 today. That sounds like 1/10th of the season plus. When will the sample size be large enough for a decision or for some action? I am not ranting that something must be done immediately but this team just doesn't seem to have the fire to generate runs.

I look at our field players and see a lot of quality. Defensively, we have a terrific outfield with an excellent defensive sub in Young. Moreland is certainly a good 1st BM, and Pedroia may have lost some range but is still mid quality defensively in the league. Bogaerts is in the same boat. Good but not great defensively. Then we have Panda who has neither range or ball security. Our catchers are very good defensively. All-in-all we have one weak position.

Offensively we have Pedroia who is a proven offensive player. Even if he regresses from last year he still is good. Beni is in his first full year. Nice swing, good plate discipline. He is facing lefties regularly now as well. Time will tell how good he can be but certainly adequate for now. Betts is one of the best hitter in the league but so far hasn't shown a lot of pop. I expect he will. Rameiriz is a bit streaky. He has power but seems to need a goad at times. Probably not having Ortiz around to stimulate him is a negative. Moreland has really been a positive surprise. He is up there with league leaders in BA and was leading in doubles. Great start. Panda lacks plate discipline but does make contact sometimes hard even on the balls off the plate. You wonder how he would do if he really developed discipline. Too late for that and at 214 BA, he is not giving us 3rd bm type numbers.Bogaerts is also proven and will hit, including some power. Bradley was unfortunately out for a while and needs to get back into the swing of things. Leon and Vazquez have had their moments. We have two quality subs on the bench in Young and Hernandez, both of whom can hit.

So why so few runs? We lack power for certain with the fewest HR total by a lot. We feature a lot of smaller guys with limited pop. We also seem to lack that fire some teams in the past have possessed, where Cowboying Up was the rallying approach. Does the fire come from the players, from the managers, from the front office? Francona seemed to engender more but maybe just because he had Ortiz.

In another thread, someone suggested it is time to try doing something else. Bunt, run more, changing the batting order, changing some of the players for bench players. No suggestions to go out and get a basher (for which i am thankful). So if more than 10% of the season goes by and we are not showing life offensively, how long will the team be allowed to continue this funk? Right now we don't look like a playoff team so how do we get there?

Ted Williams might not be the most realistic standard to hold any player to..
