Castillo had the major league job when he was acquired but he lost it and did nothing to win it back.

He basically had two months where he got significant playing time in Boston -- one of which was very good (August '15) and one of which was bad (Sept. '15). He lost the job based on s*** that happened in spring training...always a reliable indicator of major league talent, as we know.

Last year I'd have agreed he wasn't doing anything to merit another shot, but his performance in 2017 has very much put him back on the map as someone who could help us. He'll get another chance at some point...whether it's here is less certain.

When he got sent down, he continued slumping for an extended period at AAA. He just did nothing to win the job. He only started hitting this season -- a full year after he was removed from the 40 man roster. In order to remove him from the 40 man roster, he had to pass through waivers without anyone claiming him. He has been a complete bus. He has hit for 2 1/2 months at AAA after having him for 2 years. We signed him at 26 years old and he is now 29 years old. He was supposed to be major league ready, not a guy that had to develop in the minors. He is a major bust.

Too bad about Espinoza, he's getting TJ surgery, be out all next year. Padres medical staff screwed that up. Edited by OH FOY!

He couldn't hurt this bunch but who would he take playing time from -- AB or Bradley?

I've always liked Castillo, felt he never really got a true shot in MLB, and hate that his salary has landed him in roster purgatory with no end in sight.

That said, the team clearly cares about the luxury tax whether we as fans like it or not, and pretending or wishing otherwise just isn't going to lead anywhere...

I agree completely, on both counts.

Keep Castillo down. He's not worth blowing the cap for.

Maybe not this year. Next year they have to find a Young replacement and if they use Castillo, they don't need to pay for 2 4th OF.

Would you sign Castillo for $11 million if he was a free agent? That's essentially what are you doing if you call him up.

He is paid that already this and next year. They need to see if they can recoup some of it.

If we can get a quality OF'er for less than the luxury tax on Castillo's deal, I'd be surprised.\\

That's basically what the comp should be.

The problem is that once we add Castillo to the 40 man, we can't get out of counting his salary against the luxury tax until his contract ends (3 years after this season ends). We will likely reach the 50% tax bracket during his last season here. That's a $5.5M tax for just that one year.

I doubt he ever makes it on our 40 man roster for that reason alone.

You have no idea what you're talking about

I read that Jason Groome got lit up in his single A debut for 9 runs in 1 1/3 innings and then was removed from the game with an arm injury or something severe.

That was a quick career.

Wasn't that his debut this season in the rain? He was removed with a lat injury.

The biggest issue with groome is control and the lack of velocity on the fastball.

Jeremy Barfield is having a very interesting season for the Seadogs.

He's a weird profile, at first glance he's a 29-year-old who's played at AA or above for 7 seasons now but some of that was as a pitcher and then he converted back to hitting.

But yes, interesting would be the word but I'm skeptical he will ever contribute at the MLB level. Who knows, maybe he can play 1B.

Tell me more. Have you seen him?

What could there possibly be to see?

The system has been raped.

The well is all but bone dry.

And the cliff looms.

Pardon me as I return to wringing my hands.

???

Calling up Castillo would essentially be like signing him as a free agent in regards to his impact on the luxury tax. The poster I quoted didn't understand that.

LOL!! Back up the truck and sell off the veterans before it is too late. get Ben back and let's do another $200 million/year last place rebuild for 3 years.

Hey as long as it is only your hands that you are wringing down there then all is good.

I have not seen but he is a big boy. With all these little guys we have here it is kind of like a breath of fresh air to have a guy that at least looks like he might be able to hit it over the fence .

lol - probably me. I understand perfectly but you have to understand that I don't buy into all of this fake budgetary talk very much. 50 or so million here - another 50 or so there - my goodness who can we ever afford to compete. What forever shall we do. That luxury tax thing is just so vexing.

There's no indication he didn't understand that. A callup of Castillo will probably incur luxury tax, but his salary is indeed a sunk cost, so it could be cheaper to call up Castillo than to sign a free agent at dollars similar to Chris Young's deal for example.
