There's no indication he didn't understand that. A callup of Castillo will probably incur luxury tax, but his salary is indeed a sunk cost, so it could be cheaper to call up Castillo than to sign a free agent at dollars similar to Chris Young's deal for example.

??? - lol

lol - probably me. I understand perfectly but you have to understand that I don't buy into all of this fake budgetary talk very much. 50 or so million here - another 50 or so there - my goodness who can we ever afford to compete. What forever shall we do. That luxury tax thing is just so vexing.

A deal similar to Young would be cheaper than Castillo, and wouldn't count against the cap for the next four years either.

a) Not in incremental cost.

B) How would it not count against the cap?

Young signed for 2/13. Castillo has 4/44 left on his deal. A deal similar to Young would be for less years and money.

I get that. But if you sign Chris Young II you have to pay him, and you also have to keep paying Castillo. That's the point.

Yeah, but Castillo is like the amnesty clause in basketball. He doesn't count against the cap.

I think the Red Sox would call him up if they thought he was good.

It comes down to the final cost Henry will have to pay. Looking at just 2018, assuming we reset the tax this year:

A) Bring Castillo up. Pay him $11M. Luxury tax cost: $11M.

B) Sign a FA for $5M/1 yr. Pay Castillo $11M + $5M for new FA= $16M plus luxury tax cost (12% of $16M= about $2M)= $18M

The bigger problem would occur as we enter Castillo's 5th, 6th and 7th years of his deal. If he sucks, we cannot remove him from the luxury tax budget for the remainder of his contract, and the tax would go up to %20%, 30% and then 50%. Now, we're talking about calling him up probably being worse than signing a FA for those next 3 years.

It's not a simple choice to make. DD and Henry will have to gauge the likelihood of Castillo being a plus for the remainder of his contract. That's a risk.

12% + 20% + 30% + 50% of $11M totals over $12M in additional luxury taxes that Henry would not have to pay had he left Castillo in Purgatory.

Went to a Spinners game late afternoon, to see some young arms. Pantoja throws hard, but cant throw strikes. Batters just wait for their counts, and hit him hard.

Florentino looked OK, as a closer, man they got some small kids, as Pitchers. No more than a College game. Ledezma for Ct. Tigers was best player out there. He should be promoted soon, head and shoulders above the competition.

Just saw he'll be 22 in Nov. and still in Short Season League, so nothing special there.

Didn't get to see him other night, (wasn't in Line-up) but Garrett Benge a 13th Round Pick this year out of Oklahoma State had a hell of a game last night for the Spinners. 5-5 with 5 RBI's.

Strong games for Chavis (3 for 4 with HR) and first round pick Houck (3 IP, 0 BB, 4 K, 0 Hits, 0 ER).

Chavis is really making some noise. He is only 21 years old and has an OPS above 900 in AA. I'm glad the Red Sox didn't move him at the trade deadline.

Chavis with 9 game hitting streak, but what I'm liking is 37 AB's with 5 K's. He's trying to cut down on his K's, and have a plan for his at bats. Progress, that's all you ask for in a kid.

Doesn't matter, he's only 5'10". His career is dooooooomed...

This how Perfect Game evaluated Chavis coming out. I like this site better than SoxProspects my preference.

Like this early video of him, he has some quick hands.

I agree!

Very goof at WWBA WC

Also:

Underrated physical tools, 6.68 runner, has quick feet at third base, plenty of arm strength, can quicken up release and polish footwork but has all the tools to be a solid defender, also plays the outfield.

Chavis is a garbage defender.
