The apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree. Character issues should be taken very seriously when drafting players -- especially in round 1.

If that's how you feel I'm sure you're very much wanting the Sox to dump Marrero immediately.

Interesting that Mike Lowell thinks its a bad idea to bring up Devers this year to the Majors. He said this at the Futures Game.

Johnson had a nice game tonight, a 3 hitter. Workman is really impressing me down at Pawtucket. I like to see him before we look for another in a Trade.

Quietly Danny Mars is making a name for himself.

I don't know much about Marrero, but he has never had any market value, so character issues don't really matter much for him.

There were vague reports of character/makeup issues with Groome before the draft, and presumably the Red Sox looked into this and didn't see it as enough of a concern not to draft him. I trust the organization enough to know what's going on with him and act accordingly, but I can't recall hearing or reading anything negative about him since then, and I'm certainly not trading him just because of something his father did...

Well, let's just say his dad and some Catholic priests might have a lot to talk about. But I disagree, I think it's all about character. If you think a guy is a poison and bad in the club house then he's just as big as a problem whether he's your clean up hitter or if he's the 25th man on the roster. Actually, it's probably worse if he's the 25th man because he's contributing little and messing with the Mojo.

Personally from what I've heard Devon is a stand-up guy and I'm not going to throw an 18-year-old kid under the bus for the sins of the father. I know plenty of people with a bad parent who grew up to be outstanding people. We don't know how much of an influence the father has had, if he's been in the household etc etc etc. I'm sure the Sox are taking good care of him and we haven't heard anything whatsoever about character flaws since he's been in the system.

Now perhaps he shows up to spring training next year and gets arrested for going 120 MPH and tells the cops he makes more money than they ever will but maybe not.

Yeah, trading someone based off of family news seems a little excessive to me too. I also believe the Sox have done their due diligence too although they've taken some risks in the past that have not ended so well. However, I think it's a lot easier to justify taking that type of risk with a 3rd round (Jon Denney) pick or a 7th round (Cody Kukuk) or a 23rd round (Drake Britton). I highly doubt they'd take the same risk with the #`12 overall pick if they didn't have a higher level of confidence in Groome than they did all those other guys.

Lots of good PawSox promotions coming up too:

7/21 - David Ortiz replica jersey

7/22 - youth clinic and JBJ bobblehead

7/23 - PawSox HOF induction for Mo Vaughn and Joe Morgan

Can't decide which to go to. All 3?

I might have to make a trip up to see a game myself.

Devers will be facing a bum tonight. Chiefs are the worse Pitching team in the International League. He should have a good weekend.

Nice game by Mata tonight. Mars another 3 hits. Devers should be facing AJ Cole in his 1st game. Edited by OH FOY!

Listening to baseball reporters, they said if they reset their payroll Rusney could be in the plans next year as 4th Outfielder.

I could see it. A 20% tax on Rusney's deal will likely be less than Henry would have to pay to get a decent 4th OF'er via free agency.

(Young cost us $6.5M per year, and 20% of $11.8M is "just" $2.22M.)

It does make sense if Rusney can cut the mustard. He seems to be playing decently this year.

If we can "save money" by not replacing Young's $6.5M with a FA 4th OF'er, what other choices do we have in our system right now?

Holt?

Brentz?

Mars?

I think Castillo could work his way to a roster slot. I read somewhere though, that once we add him to the 40 man roster (again), we are stuck with his contract for the luxury budget to the end. The tax issue might not be big for 2018, but it looks like we project to be way over the limit in 2019 and 2020 and 2021 could be near second tier penalty zone.

Devers hit his HR off tough Lefty too, that's what I like. Neal Cotts has always been a Lefty specialist. They brought him in to face Devers, that's good stuff. Edited by OH FOY!

The real budget issues might come up in 2018, 2019 or 2020. That may be what keeps him off the 40 man.

But you showed why he would be cheaper in terms of marginal cost than another Chris Young-type contract. It all comes down to if he's good enough.

Kid that is flying under the radar is Mike Shawaryn, he has pitched 88 innings and has 115 K's this year. Batters are hitting .226 this year. He goes today.

Never heard of him. I need folks like you doing my homework when it comes to prospects.

Cheaper than a Young type when the tax is 20%, but maybe not when the tax reaches 50% or are approaching the mega penalty phase of $40M over the limit.

50% of Castillo's contract is $5.9M. While that might not sound too bad, we won't be able to go back once we call him up. His contract will count the rest of the way, even if we boot him from the 40 man.

I still think he may be a legitimate option for 4th OF'er over the next 3 years, but budget concerns in 2019 and 2020 may be what keeps him down.

Beeks threw a nice game last night. He has no put away pitch, but continues to get hitters out.

If he continues to throw well, I wonder if he gets a September call up.
