I concur with that theory.

Wee, BJ got knocked around in the 5th but JF stayed with him. I imagine he will be out in the 6th, but who knows.

Yeah so much for the great Doug Fister Experiment.

The Sox starting pitching is a big reason they are in first place, obviously. But going into the season I saw a rotation consisting of the best pitcher in the league, the former best pitcher in the league, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, a knuckleballer who was in last year's All Star Game and 5th and 6th starters in Pomeranz and ERod, either would have been the ace of the Orioles staff LOL. They have been good but they could have been off the charts.

Sale has a 0.61 ERA and 0.71 WHIP in his 4 no-decisions this season and 2.64/0.85 in his 4 losses...it's amazing to think he could pretty easily have 6 or 7 more wins right now than he does (11). He also may hit the 200 strikeout mark tonight as he's only 9 away. What a remarkable season he's having.

Chris Freakin' Sale!

I'm good with our starting five all getting an extra day's rest. Our success is tied to our starters.

I'd hate to think where we'd be without Chris Sale.

Best thing DD has done in his tenure.

Yes, an extra day here and there should help down the road.

I do think JF has done a pretty good job not over-using the top starters, although having a well-performing pen made his choices easier.

So am I correct in surmising that what we're presently looking at is a rotation of :

Sale

Price

Porcello

Pomeranz

Rodriguez

Farrell received a lot of criticism over giving the staters an extra day of rest and using Fister in lieu of Sale. I get that criticism, but looking at it from the other side, Farrell still has to manage for the season, not just for today's game. A little extra rest now might pay off in the long run.

Also, how nice was it to have Sale pitch the opener of the west coast trip and start us of with a win. Another thing, Sale will pitch twice on the tough road trip rather than just once. So there are some benefits to that decision.

Your rotation is going to carry your team. Sale and Price are legit aces. Porcello is coming off a CY last year. Pom is having a good year and ERod is a phenomenal #5. The question as always is if you can hit enough to support them

And we have Johnson an Velasquez in Pawtucket.

And no, our hitting is not good enough to get this team to a World Series.

But hopefully Dave makes a deal for a real bat with some pop.

Other teams will have to hits vs our pitchers.

I've always felt good pitching trumps good hitting, so we'll see, if we can score enough to win come playoff time. How much is "enough"?

Depends.

Agreed. I didn't get the criticism at all...this is an "all in" season, and as such you've got to think about how best to keep the big guns fresh for October. I wouldn't mind using Fister (provided he can figure things out, because he's been a disappointment thus far), Johnson, and Velazquez to sprinkle some strategically timed spot starts throughout the calendar the rest of the way for this exact reason.

But how much rest do starting pitchers need these days? The days of 4 man rotations and complete games are long gone, of course. Now a starter goes every 5th day, for 6 innings. And these guys just had the All-Star Break. I don't really get it, myself.

Some news on a different note. Details about Price's confrontation with Eck have were printed last night or this morning.

If the reports are true, then it does not paint Price, or his applauding teammates, in a very positive light. I am all for sticking up for your teammates, but this is absolutely no way to treat Eck.

From the Globe:

"Price was standing near the middle of the team aircraft, surrounded by fellow players, waiting for Eckersley. When Eckersley approached, on his way to the back of the plane (Sox broadcasters traditionally sit in the rear of the aircraft), a grandstanding Price stood in front of Eckersley and shouted, 'Here he is -- the greatest pitcher who ever lived! This game is easy for him!'

"When a stunned Eckersley tried to speak, Price shot back with, 'Get the [expletive] out of here!'

"Many players applauded.

"Eckersley made his way to the back of the plane as players in the middle of the plane started their card games. In the middle of the short flight, Eckersley got up and walked toward the front where Sox boss Dave Dombrowski was seated. When Eckersley passed through the card-playing section in the middle, Price went at him again, shouting, "Get the [expletive] out of here!'"

I saw this, too. Really, really bad look for Price and whoever the players are who applauded. Maybe it's an isolated incident and a non-issue, but this kind of petulance, lack of professionalism, and disrespect towards a Hall of Famer doesn't make me feel particularly good about the culture in the clubhouse.

I wonder if we'll look back on this story at the end of the year and see it as an iceberg.

In instance after instance Price comes off like a nasty immature jerk-- going all the way back to his feud with Ortiz while Price was still with Tampa. A couple of days ago there was an article by Tomase (I think) that was about Hanley being the unlikely clubhouse leader because of his positive and upbeat personality and he contrasted that to the scowl of David Price which characterizes much of the rest of the clubhouse. He likened the mentoring by Price of AB and Bradley as cancerous like AGon was with young players in 2012.

I don't understand such hate and anger directed at a team announcer. Eck was not unfairly critical at all. My recollection was that he pointed out that Price had not covered first base. It wasn't a questionable call. Price had not covered first base, that was his job and it cost the team an out. An announcer's job, especially the color analyst, is to point out these things. Eck was not terribly critical in my recollection. In fact, I think he acknowledged that it had happened to him.

Honestly, IF there really is an issue, the problem now resides with Farrell. If his onfield moves don't matter, he at least needs to manage the airplane travel, no?

This is what happens when a player starts thinking he's bigger than the team.

I agree with a700's recollection of what happened. Eck (in his own way) talked about Price's not covering the bag. Roughly quoted, 'Price didn't even cover the bag on that play!' "Man, he's got to get over there!'. 'But I've done that too'.

I have no problem with a player taking exception to what someone says about him when it's not factual, but Eck was right. I have a bulletin for Mr. Price. Public criticism is part of the game when you're a professional athlete, and if you can't take the heat - especially when you were wrong - you should find another kitchen.

After the incident, Farrell and Dombrowski reportedly spoke to David and 'handled' the matter. Was that enough? I can't say.

An apology to Eck from both Price and Farrell, whether public or private, would have been nice.

So you have a manager who allows his players to abuse reporters? And an ownership that won't demand that he issue an apology? Oh that bodes well. I'm sure the fan base is ENTIRELY behind Price on this one.

There was a report from somebody that Price's beef was with Eck saying 'Yuck' when he heard the numbers from E-Rod's rehab outing.

Given Price's history, it's probably not worth trying to find his pathetic motivation. The fact that he's a db is enough. That cannot be corrected. But his boorish behavior can be.

They said the same thing after the incident earlier in the season when Price was yelling and cursing at reporters in the clubhouse, so clearly whatever they're saying isn't taking hold...
