Looks like our starting rotation is settling. Sale, Price, Porcello, Pomeranz and E Rod. Johnson in the 'bullpen'. Injuries aside, this group has much more upside to get, especially Pomeranz and Pocello. Porcello really took off in July last year, and maybe Pomeranz has finally discovered his third pitch, cutter to go along with his fast ball and knuckle curve.

And obviously getting nothing previously from Price, things can only get better.

Now waiting patiently for the return of one Carson Smith. Because we ain't gettin' nothin' from Thornburg. Milwaukee says thank you Boston.

I kind of agree, but I don't see Johnson in the pen. IMO he'll be kept stretched out in Pawtucket and called up - and sent down - as is necessary.

I agree as well. If it does come to that, Pom should be the one to go to the pen, if for no other reason than it's a role he's had before.

Nice to see the bats pick up Sale on an off night. It makes up for some of those low-scoring no decisions and losses earlier..

I mean "bullpen" as in #6 starter....sorry

Kendrick gave up 7 ER for Pawtucket tonight. He will contribute nothing to the big club.

You know I want to say something about Pomeranz right now but I'll behave myself. lol

Is Espinoza pitching again yet?

Pomeranz pitched great. I still would have not made the deal. But if he keeps pitching like that ,I'll have egg on my face. I'm more concerned with Price. I hope they both stay healthy and not pitching under a cortisone shot. It's something not overlooking but we will see.

You've been a Pomeranz loyalist all along, haven't you? There may be a merit badge in this for you. :)

Per Moon......We go freaking' Chris Sale!

He's having a great impact on our pitching staff, especially Pom and E Rod I believe.

It's very interesting to note both Pom and E Rod have gone through similar experiences. Due to knee injury, E Rod was ineffective at the beginning of last season. If you recall, he relied almost exclusively on two pitches. It was not until he was sent down and recalled that he looked to be much stronger (over the knee injury?). His fastball had more life and he finally started throwing his third pitch effectively.

Same thing now with Pom. The message seem to be that Pom was afraid throw the cutter thinking that would put undue stress on his throwing arm. Similarly to E Rod, he can't be effective with just two pitches.

At least they have both shown glimpse of higher ceiling pitchers as a #4/#5 rotation guys. (I'm not discounting the fact that E Rod may be much better than that). Two Cy Young award winners along with one of top pitchers from last five years: well our starting five looks formidable.

yup I have been. I liked what I saw of him last summer. A big lefty with upside. He is young and is a ml pitcher. Like I said last year, over and over, I hope that Espinoza becomes what all of the scouts said he might but I still liked the odds for us in making this trade. If Pomeranz was older, I would have felt differently for sure but he is still young.

His durability might come down with throwing 100 pitches in 3-4 innings . That's a lot of stress for him (and viewers) to endure.

May he be on the right step with a "new" cutter he is throwing. His 2 pitch mix before was mediocre at best.

Good points.

Hopefully, Price will learn something from Chris Freakin Sale.

So far, he's had two s***** starts, three really good starts and lots of mediocrity. As a fifth starter, you can do much worse. If they didn't trade Espinoza for him, I'm sure there'd be much less talk about how mediocre he is.

Spot on, I think. I'm trying to keep my opinion of the trade separate from my judgment on Pomeranz himself. Need to see a lot more consistency from him, but the last 2 starts have been very encouraging.

My biggest concern with him is durability.

But my Gawd, the impending cliff!! Things could come crashing down in 2021. I don't think I can live through having a last place team. Oh.... wait ...I have lived through 3 of them in 4 years under the stewardship of Benny the Boob. I heard that he is the best Coffee Boy/Gopher the Blue jays have had. The coffee is always hot.

2 starts don't make a season.

Exactly.

He seems to be using three pitches finally. That is a good sign.

Let's see if he can consistently make it to 7 innings without crapping all over himself.

Last night he put men on in each inning except the first. That can catch up with him.

He's been okay - and yes good for a 5th starter. And his strikeout ability portends to better results being inside there.

Waiting is annoying - but the evidence was always in favor of the team turning the corner on its own.

It's almost similar to deciding whether to receive social security check at age 62 or wait until you turn 66, at much higher amount. Advantage goes to the guy that's drawing at 62 for first three or four years but.... On the other hand, you can also drop dead at 65 and receive NOTHING.

Not that you would care because you are dead.

The point is Pom's last two starts have giving the Sox TWO WINS. Last I checked, Espinoza had not won a damn thing. There you go.

And for Kimmi's gang, if I die before 2021, I won't have to go over the cliff with you all.

Surely you don't actually believe this trade (or any other) should be evaluated in this manner.

Hey, Bartolo Colon has won a couple of games this season, too...maybe he's worth Jason Groome?

Pretty good analogy. I'm an accountant in Canada and we advise all our clients to grab the Canada Pension Plan benefits as soon as they turn 60 instead of waiting until 65.

We now have 5 solid starters plus Johnson tucked away in AAA. We don't need a starter. And I'm not sure Bartolo Colon and Pomeranz are comparable pitchers. Give me another name and I will consider it.
