In an industry largely exempt from antitrust laws, MLB teams that perform poorly are often wildly profitable.

In an economy in which business ventures frequently fail, no MLB franchise is in danger of folding.

Even teams with profits looking low (cooked books or not), the value of their team has risen so much, the massive profit is there for the taking at any time.

Could that describe an employer as well?

I suppose it might. i think that maybe you and I see things a little differently don't you think? The good news at least for me is that I don't have to agree with any of your views and opinions and vice versa. And honestly, yes, I did think that I owed something to the person whose name appeared on the bottom of my paycheck.

You are right we are obligated to pay if no one picks him up and we can stash him in Pawtucket, but if someone picks him up we are obligated for about a half million. There is a cut off day where they have to release before a certain date in March.

I am grateful for the employers I've had over the past 47 years, including my current employer of 20+ years. I've been fairly compensated with increases in good times and an occasional decrease in rough times.

I'd like to think that my employers have been grateful for my contributions as well.

Not that long ago MLB had to make two $25 million loans to the Mets just to meet payroll after they moved into their new ballpark. They were having trouble making payroll. MLB might have let them go under but they had crisis with the LA Dodgers ownership at the same time.

And despite that a year ago Forbes valued the Mets at $1.65 billion and the Dodgers at $2.5 billion:

... up from $604 million and $482 million 10 years earlier:

But, if nobody picks him up, which they might not at $2M, I think we still pay him, and his salary counts against the luxury limit.

I could be wrong, and would love it if I am.

I thought $2M was too much.

Here is a quote from Tim Britton on the topic of whether the Sox would have to pay Abad or not:

"It should be noted that arbitration salaries are not guaranteed until Opening Day. The Red Sox could save most of the $2 million if they decided to release Abad prior to April 3 — a move the White Sox just made with infielder Brett Lawrie."

I don't know whether his information is accurate or not, but it sounds about right. I read elsewhere that the Sox would owe Abad $600,000 if they released him.

My statement was very general even though I think that it is an extremely accurate take on society today. i can only speak for myself. In his same situation, I would not be going.

I agree with you here. If I knew that I was fighting for a roster spot, there is no way I'm jeopardizing that by playing in the WBC.

I believe the cutoff date before his salary is fully guaranteed is in the middle of March.

Just looked it up if an arbitration eligible player is released in spring training the club owes him 30 days or 45 days salary termination pay, depending when he's released. Once season starts the salary is 100% guaranteed.

I'm for quarantining Abad's salary. Who's with me??!!

I've said before that I'm keeping as many arms as possible.

Personally, I'd keep Abad, at least to start the season, and send one of the relievers with options to AAA.

No habla. Does yhis mean that they make their own HDTV's?

You're probably right. I'm on the fence concerning Abad.

Sustaining a viable second franchise in that huge market should be a priority for MLB.

Saving any franchise should be done to ensure the image of MLB. You don't want any part being seen as weak.

As usual, Kimmi appears to be correct:

And if you or any player declined, I would and do understand that position.

But I can't begrudge any baseball player who wants the opportunity to play baseball...

With the Mets, wasn't that because they Wilpons lost a rather substantial amount to Bernie Madoff. I guess that would mean the bright side for the Mets was it wasn't like the team wasn't making money.

I don't have time to watch all of these early round games. I am already about 4 games behind. LOL

However, there has been some good baseball played so far.

As others have mentioned, the WBC is a bigger deal in other countries than it is in the U.S. The Japanese fans are very much into it.

The Mets owners have still not recovered financially from the Madoff involvement. They weren't making money for a few years as their attendance fell. They were very lucky that they had a crop of young homegrown pitching studs to salvage the franchise.

Not lucky enough for them to all be healthy at the same time, however.

You hate to restrict these things, and no offense intended, but some of the teams in the finals and especially the qualifying (which was by invitation) have no business being there. I'd like a much shorter list of contestants with more games between them.

The U.S. team was a strong favorite over the team from Colombia and was supposed to beat them easily. Team USA did win, but it took them 10 innings to beat them 3-2. That's the beauty of baseball.

On a related note, Quintana was the starting pitcher for Colombia and he basically shut down the US hitters for 5 innings.

For anyone who doesn't believe that the WBC is a big deal or that it's a joke, watch some of the games and watch the reactions of both the players and the fans. The announcers likened the excitement of the crowds to the crowds of World Cup Soccer playoffs and crowds of later rounds of the NCAA March Madness games.

The U.S. plays the DR at 6:30 tonight. Who's in?
