In any case countries like Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan certainly have plenty of TVs if that is a standard by which you have to judge interest.

Be serious. The WBC may mean little to Americans. But then we have MLB teams in most major markets.

Seeing how their guys play against the best players in the world means a lot to many countries.

This is a silly discussion.

For the record I am firmly meh about the WBC.

I am being only slightly silly. I do wonder if they have HDTV. I am pretty sure that they don't manufacture them on the island. If they import state of the art electronics from Asia, why wouldn't they also import Japanese and Korean cars? I suspect that their TV's are as retro as their cars. My point isn't that this would make the WBC less exciting to them. It is probably more exciting to them, since there aren't a lot of luxuries on the island.

OK - Just curious what other people think. I'm with Porcello on this one. The obligation to your team should trump your personal feelings when it comes to playing for your country if you are a professional. It is a long season!

Playing for your country should trump everything. That said, there's no good time to be playing this tournament, it seems.

On the other hand, I'm really pissed at the NHL's attitude towards the Olympics.

No habla. Does yhis mean that they make their own HDTV's?

It's news about the analog blackout. They are trying to move to strictly digital, but black weather made some digital systems fail. We are scheduled to move on completely from analog tv this year as well.

I don't know for sure but I suspect the Cubans don't make their own HDTVs.

If the Cubans don't make their own HDTVs, they're in good company:

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/opinion/2014/10/22/americans-make-tvs/17680951/

http://www.politifact.com/virginia/statements/2016/mar/14/donald-trump/donald-trump-says-us-doesnt-make-tvs-anymore/

The difference being that if they don't make their own TV's, they have been under trade restrictions for 60 years, which is why they drive 1950's automobiles. I was just wondering about life in Cuba.

Almost no one makes their own HDTV's.

I made my own HDTV.

It doesn't work very well, but I made it...

you continue to surprise and amaze me Notin. For the record, I am lukewarm about the wbc obviously. Maybe not even lukewarm. I'm for cheering hard to promote the great game of bb worldwide just not as much as some I guess. Selfish I know - but if the tournament is going to hurt us in anyway, i am opposed to it. I particularly do not want to see our pitchers competing for anyone other than us.

Is this true? Do some nations really care about this?

Yes. They do.

For the past 15 or so years the Sr. Little League World Series was held less than an hour's drive from my home. To qualify to play in the Senior League a player has to be no more than 16 years old by a certain date, although the timing of the SLWS makes it possible for 17 year olds to play depending on their birthday. I can't count on both hands the number of young players I've seen come through the Sr League WS who went on to play MLB - inclucing Xander Bogaerts who was signed by the Sox within a couple of weeks after my having seen him play as a young 17 year old.

It's a true World Series with four teams from the US as well as teams from Canada, Europe, Asia, The Phillipines, etc., all of whom have won numerous tournaments to qualify for the WS.

But my point here is that these teams bring maybe a couple of hundred fans with them and believe me when I say that they CARE about baseball. While the number of fans isn't big at the same time many of them come from half way around the world (at their own expense) and many of them send broadcasters who do play-by-play over the internet in their own language.

So yes... they care about baseball and national pride.

My opinion is they should have the WBC in the middle of the season, but without MLB players. I would be more excited to watch the red sox minor leaguers play in the WBC in July than major leaguers in March. They would probably play better as they would be in mid-season form and have something to prove.

This is probably the best idea I've heard all day.

I don't want to see any player injured and hurt the Sox chances. And it can be tough on pitchers, although, unlike spring training and MLB games, the WBC does have rules in place for pitch counts, and in the past they have been surprisingly low. 65 pitches in the first round. The limit does increase as the tournament goes on, but has never reached 100 pitches....

Lefthanders Eduardo Rodriguez and Fernando Abad are on WBC rosters as well, according to the Boston Globe:

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2017/02/27/wbc-presents-classic-conundrum/DzYZUaMDjoPqfWfd0uibuI/story.html

Well, I hope ERod is able to build up his arm strength and not get injured. I know there were concerns about him being ready for opening day at one point. Worst case scenario is one of your starters going down so I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Abad is a serviceable, but not overly important part of the pen.

With the Price injury, if E-Rod pitches in the wbc, it would represent a major kick to the clackers.

E-Rod and Hanley should not smell the WBC

Hanley has already been ruled out due to his shoulder, I thought.

Is Bogey no less vital to the Sox fortunes this year?

Just seems like less of an injury risk than a SP who isn't stretched out or Hanley who is dealing with shoulder soreness.

Hanley is definitely out. Thank goodness they came to their senses about that.

I don't like Bogaerts going either, but he is not dealing with an injury that we know of.

The other two are.

Seattle shortstop Jean Segura replaces Hanley Ramirez on the Dominican roster:

The Mariners perhaps have the most to lose with their players in the World Baseball Classic:

http://sports.mynorthwest.com/247363/the-mariners-lose-another-to-the-wbc-what-this-means/

Seattle's 2-3-4 hitters -- Jean Segura, Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz, who last year combined for 15.2 fWAR -- will be teammates for the Dominican Republic.

The Mariners will send three-fifths of their starting rotation: Felix Hernandez (Venezuela), Drew Smyly (United States) and Yovani Gallardo (Mexico).

Shutdown closer Edwin Diaz is on the Puerto Rico roster.

Of course, injuries could happen in Spring Training as well as in the World Baseball Classic.

The Mariners do have a lot of players participating.

As I've said, I really enjoy the WBC and don't think it's meaningless like most here do, but I'm glad that most of the Sox players are sitting it out.

I'm not sure that most think that it is meaningless at all. i think that there are plenty of people here who think that our pitchers should not be involved for sure. Personally, I don't think that contracted professionals should be playing in it.

The WBC starts tomorrow.

I have my DVR set up to record all the games. Many of them are airing either during sleeping or working hours. There are a lot of games and there is no way I'll be able to watch them all, but I'm looking forward to it.

Who's in with me?????
