The WBC starts tomorrow.

I have my DVR set up to record all the games. Many of them are airing either during sleeping or working hours. There are a lot of games and there is no way I'll be able to watch them all, but I'm looking forward to it.

Who's in with me?????

I don't have a DVR.

You inviting us all over to watch?

That would be nice.

Haha. Sure!

Just be aware that I have absolutely no alcoholic beverages in my house and the party ends at 10:00 sharp every week night.

If I had to join one poster from this forum's motley crew to watch baseball, I would choose the gentle soul of Kimmi.

According to MassLive, Boston manager John Farrell hints that Fernando Abad's participation in the World Baseball Classic may hurt the lefthander's chances of making the Red Sox roster:

Sometimes in life, we have decisions to make. With a potential major league contract on the line, he is choosing to go pitch for his country. Can't criticize that can you in today's world. if he gets cut, maybe he will be able to sue the Red Sox to get what he thinks is his job back.

That's not how the system works.

After losing his arbitration case, perhaps Fernando Abad doesn't care whether he returns to the Red Sox. The lefthander may prefer a minor league deal with another club over the $2 million with the Sox.

I was actually being sarcastic. I don't know how the system works and honestly I don't care. There continues to be a tremendous shortage of accountability in the world of today. Do what you want when you want and bitch of you don't like the fact that you don't get your way. Sorry but if I was his employer he would get what he should get - 0.

The Red Sox could cut him for any reason or for no reason at all. There is no way the CBA has any language that protects a player's roster spot in that manner.

good - Without knowing anything at all about the CBA, my guess would be that the players are pretty well protected against anything that could conceivebly harm them.

If Abad got injured playing pick up basketball or riding a motorcycle or doing some other contractually prohibited activity, that would be a lack of accountability on his part.

But if he gets injured playing baseball in an MLB-sanctioned tournament, that's not the same thing. It's just bad (or good, if you don't like Abad much) luck.

Clearly Dombrowski has some sort of positive opinion of the guy, as he traded for him and then offered him arbitration. If Abad does get released, it's more likely related to his pitching and how it changed that opinion...

It doesn't guarantee him a roster spot, but it has protections for his contract. Not necessarily to the full amount, however...

Yes, he's guaranteed to get paid based on the terms of his contract. Yes, he could be cut without warning.

My statement was very general even though I think that it is an extremely accurate take on society today. i can only speak for myself. In his same situation, I would not be going.

Thanks for the correction. I can't cite the authority but I think the salary is guaranteed.

If they release him before a certain day in March his whole salary is not guaranteed. I believe the team that picks him up is responsible for most of it.

But, if nobody picks him up, which they might not at $2M, I think we still pay him, and his salary counts against the luxury limit.

I could be wrong, and would love it if I am.

I thought $2M was too much.

Under Article VI, Section E(4) of the previous MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement, "Upon submission of the salary issue to arbitration by either Player or Club, the Player shall be regarded as a signed Player."

http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/cba_english.pdf

An even earlier CBA permitted a club to cut without pay a free agent who had agreed to arbitration. The issue was discussed following the 2008 season when free agent Jason Varitek declined arbitration.

Then again, I could be wrong ... I don't have the text of the current MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Could that describe an employer as well?
