I'm a stat geek with degrees in engineering and math. I have played plenty of baseball.

I also get my experiences in Little League and high school, etc. have very little relevance to MLB games.

The whole idea that stat geeks have never a played and don't understand competition is condescending. And that's using the nicest term to describe it...

I didn't say it nor imply it. Kind of sounds like you wish that I had. None of us want to be painted with one brush do we? Not that it matters, but do you think that it is possible that there are some "stat geeks" who have never played? For the record, I never said that all "stat geeks" have never played or coached. I will stand behind what I said though - If anyone - be they a stat geek or not - truly believes that statistics can tell them that choking and playing up in the clutch don't exist - there is a pretty good chance that they really haven't done much competing. Actually I find it pretty condescending as well for you to suggest that what I have seen, felt, and experienced can be disproven through a statistical study. But in all honesty I don't care what you think. It really isn't a very important argument to have. It is fun to talk about these things when the discourse remains civil but when it starts to get nasty my personal choice is to do something worthwhile - have to go blow the snow out of my dooryard. You want to make it sound like I am anti stats or maybe even anti modern thinking. Kind of looks like the next direction. Have at it. You would be wrong.

By the way, does the fact that you have degrees in engineering and math supposed to have relevance to me in this discussion? Are you suggesting that "stat geeks" have to have degrees in math, engineering, or both? I was a fairly successful football coach and never played a down of football. Is that possible?

I'm not a big stat head guy, but I believe that the majority of people on here have played baseball or another sport and know enough about competition.

My job is dealing with numbers and financial projections. I use baseball as an escape and don't find stats to be all that enjoyable. I'd rather just turn the game on, grab a beer and bitch about the umps.

LOL 700hitter was a tax attorney and lawyers really like the word 'specious', but I can guarantee you he's not Softlaw.

Softlaw lived somewhere in the Carolinas, I think. I believe his real name was Chet, he once sent me a link to a blog he was writing, which I ignored.

I read his blog.

It was only about baseball superficially and the main theme was self-praise...

It further emphasizes my geekiness.

I watch games similarly, although without the beer. And I usually find most of my complaints about umpires to be unjustified when I see replays. Unless for some reason the umpire in question is Joe West.

Stats to me are to fill some of the other 21 hours in the day when a game isn't on...

I consider myself a stat geek, but not a hardcore one. I consider Kimmi a hardcore stat geek. I'm a softcore stat geek, I guess.

Would you like the label "Cinemax Stat Geek"?

I am an attorney, not "was an attorney". Just retired from my employer. Edited by a700hitter

Now I am ok. I'm thinking right about now that I might go clutch a bud and choke it down. I'm also thinking how much thought I have given this topic and how little it amounts to . I'v been shoveling s*** on here for quite a while and now I have to go shovel some snow!lol

For years, people believed that the reason that they caught a cold or the flu was because they went out in bitter cold weather or they went out with wet hair, or something along those lines. My mom still believes that to be the case.

Why did they believe that? Because they experienced it. They lived it. They know it happened. They went out in the cold and they got sick.

There's a saying about correlation not implying causation that holds very true.

Specious argument, and a very poor analogy. Edited by a700hitter

I am obviously not a stat geek (whatever that really is) but where scares me is that I could be!

LOL Was that Softlaw?

While I have no way of knowing for certain, I am very certain that a700 and Softlaw are not the same poster.

I never posted there under any name.

Yeah, I didn't think he was the same person, but some qualities are very similar.
You people from BDC are always looking to fit me into your preconceived notions. LOL!! None of you have me figured out at all.

Stats are a reference point for me for our opposition while I am enjoying the game with a beer and some peanuts or other snack. I know that it makes some heads explode here, but I don't need stats for the Red Sox. By watching every game, I know what is going on far more than stats could tell me. If I leave the country for a couple of weeks for vacation, I will look at their stats to see how things have gone in my absence.

But some people never seem to be able to stop trying. LOL!

The worst thing about BDC was some people were constantly trying to figure out aliases.

Baseball America's Top 100 is out...

1. Benintendi

2. Moncada

18. Devers

21. Espinoza

I don't understand the alias thing. We already have avatars and made up screen names.

On BDC people would get 'banned', but they couldn't be banned by IP address so they would just set up again under a different name. Some even had multiple names. That's where the guessing games came in. It was ridiculous.

I still believe it too. :)

Well, to be more precise, I still don't think going out in bitter cold with wet hair is a great idea.

Well I don't think it's a good idea either. :)

Stats very rarely enter the picture when I'm watching a game.

However, IMO, they are 100% necessary in order to get the best assessment of a player and in order to get the best understanding of the game. For me, they enhance the enjoyment of baseball.
