There was also a piece by Alex Speier a little while ago about K/BB being the one truly important stat in ST games.

I haven't seen that piece by Speier, but I would like to read it. (I couldn't find it.) I certainly wouldn't put too much stock in Pablo's spring training BA if that's what Speier is talking about.

For a hitter, K/BB gives some indication of plate discipline. From a pitcher, it gives some indication of control. ..

Such a simple stat, yet so effective.

I found it and Speier was actually referencing this article from a couple of years ago.

Speier sends out an e-mail newsletter called 108 Stitches.

Ah. I used to get that email newsletter, but I recently unsubscribed at the same time that I unsubscribed to several other emails because of the abundance of emails that I was getting. I wasn't aware that articles he sent out via email were not available online?

@PeteAbe

Pablo Sandoval just finished a fairly lengthy agility workout in the OF. Same stuff he did in spring training.

Definitely motivated this year. Very good sign that he will keep the weight off.

Julian Edelman is on a hamburger diet. Maybe Pablo should check it out?

The hamburger diet is way different than the cheeseburger diet. Shot in the dark... I think it's the cheese.

100 calories from a slice of cheese isn't going to ruin anyone's diet. Now, if it's a burger made completely out of cheese, that's a different story.

In all seriousness, I think it's portions for Pablo, for one. For two, Non-strategic diet.

I'm sure that he does a very good job as commentator. It's similar to ARod. ARod supposedly is very good and very informative in that role. I don't know though, because I couldn't listen to him. He's another one that I can't bring myself to like.

Yes, I heard Arod and he is very good. I can't stand him but if he is a good commentator I will listen to him any day over the many poor ones out there.

Pablo is putting in full effort and I applaud that and back him fully. He has always been an up and down player in his career and in each season. He is also a free swinger which can be a big weakness especially after such a long layoff. He is not going to transform into something he never was and at this point in his career we really have to temper our expectations. I feel the same way about Hanley. The Sox FO made a mistake picking up these two at the wrong point in their careers. Physical issues have hampered the performances of both of them, but Hanley did show he still has something left in his bat last season. We need both of them to stay healthy this season to maximize their contributions to the team. I am cautiously optimistic about both of them coming through this season.

Pablo finally took a walk yesterday, bringing his K/W ratio to 11/1. I am very pleased with what I've seen from Pablo this season, but as our good friend JoeyB points out, his K/W is something to keep an eye on.
Keep an eye on his D too.

Did it involve standing on one foot while eating his breakfast?

I'm not expecting any miracles from Pablo, but I do think he'll be at least league average, which would be an improvement over last year's 3rd base production.

Personally, I had no issues with the contract given to Hanley.

Good to see you posting again. :)

We are going to hear about it every time Pablo makes an error. Having 2 in 2 games is not the defensive start that he needed to get off to.

That said, I think he'll provide adequate, meaning average, defense.

He has never been a top glove man.

A wag might observe he is on pace for 162 error season. Give him a break, he may go 20 games without another error, I hope.

True, but he used to actually be an average to plus defender, and he's still south of 31.

UZR/150 was +2.2 from 2008-2014

23rd out of the top 46 in innings at 3B

29th out of 61 with 1,500+ innings at 3B

I'll take slightly below average, if he can gives us an .800 OPS.

(He was at +4.0 from 2008-2012 which placed him 23rd out of 60 with 1000+ innings.)

Maybe I'm allowing my bias to cloud my vision but I thought the error he made on Thursday was the result of his not bending over far enough (which is a nice way of saying that I thought maybe his gut got in the way).

In fairness... I've softened on him a lot. I no longer refer to him as The Fat Man - he's now Sandoval. But he's got to play better than he has been playing before I'll refer to him as "Panda". Panda is a term of endearment and he's got a ways to go before he endears himself to me. My goal for him now is for him to be average and overpaid.

And BTW... what in F--k was he doing hitting right handed in Thursday night's game??? He has a horrible right handed swing.. It's too long and has a big hole in it.

I agree with this post. And Pablow should never bat from the right side. He is useless in doing so.

Worked that tough walk against Bastardo in the 12th though. Then came the big Sandy Leon homer.

He blows don't you get it?!?

He's going to be the worst starting All Star the Sox have had at 3B and that includes Hillenbrand and Cooper!

He should never bat from the left side vs a LH'd starter either. If ever there was a platoon player, it should be Pablo.

vs LHPs:

2015:

.590 as LHB

.142 as RHB (Yes, this number is correct. It was his OPS not his BA!)

2014:

(No PAs as LHB)

.563 as RHB

2013:

(No PAs as LHB)

.686 as RHB

Holt hits LHPs very slightly better than RHPs, and when Rutledge is healthy, he'd be a better choice as well. Too bad Travis can't play 3B!
