8/23 @ TB, Buchholz v. Archer, Sox need to stay in 1st place in AL East

Last night was all most too good to be true--until Barnes came in for a quick dose of reality. The bullpen stinks enough that last time I finally agreed with a700hitter maybe we should give Papelbon a try, and I really don't like that guy.

 

I like Buch tonight because lately he has pitched well, and, Archer, on the other hand, has already lost 3 times to the Sox this season.

 

My guess is Sandy Leon will catch his third game in a row. Question is, will Shaw play 1B instead of HanRam and Holt play 3B? If so, that's 6 lefty bats against righty Archer.

The Red Sox own Chris Archer hard. He has a 5.82 ERA and 1.693 WHIP lifetime against the Sox, and an 8.10 ERA with 1.860 WHIP this season. This game is as close to Buchholz and BP proof as possible.

Sox numbers very good here ...

 

at the same time Archer has had the same sort of season Corey Kluber had last season - going to pile up a ton of losses, but when you look really hard - he has actually pitched fairly well. But yes, this is a bad matchup for him.

Buchholz needs a copy of his last start. I'm a little worried of a setback from him tonight. If they can steal this game it wood be good, with Porcello and Pomeranz up next you can have thoughts of a sweep.

Exactly. Archer may well be on his way to a 20 loss season. You have to be a good pitcher to lose 20 in a season; if you aren't, they won't keep sending you out there.

 

If you look at the list of 20 game losers, you see a lot of guys who had pretty good careers. Phil Niekro did it twice, Steve Carlton did it the year after he won 27 for the Phillies. Mickey Lolich. Luis Tiant. Wilbur Wood twice. Way back, Walter Johnson lost 20 twice and and Cy Young 3 times (although it was much more common when guys would start 45 or 50 games a year).

I don't know about the actual game thread, but this is already a pretty good pre-game thread. I'm with Bellhorn and take nothing for granted. Archer isn't that bad. Buchholz isn't that good.

 

What I like is that right now the Sox are engaged and determined. Benintendi made that spectacular catch, but earlier Young made a really good one that could easily have been a double. Ortiz legged out that double. Betts and HanRam had back to back sac flies to bring in I think the 3d run. Price went 8 cotton-pickin scoreless innings. And Barnes topped it all off by reminding us that our guys aren't dominant as long as we still have to go to the bullpen.

Yes, Wade Boggs, there is no rule. When I post them though, I get as creative as I can. Seems like I'm the only one who gets amused.
