He's a catcher and is out of options, so he will have to be added to the 25 man roster.

Is this the end of the line for Hanigan?

Posted

I've been a defender of Hanigan for a long time, but I think you are right.

His option next year was pretty much a no-brainer no, unless we trade Swihart, Leon or Vazquez, so cutting him loose seems like the plan.

It very well could be. He has looked absolutely terrible since he came off the DL a month ago. Early in the year, even though he wasn't getting a lot of hits, he was drawing his share of walks and at least making the pitcher work for the out by fouling a few pitches off. Now he's rarely making contact.

Steve Adams reports....

The Red Sox have claimed catcher Bryan Holaday off outright waivers from the Rangers, reports Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald (Twitter link). Texas designated Holaday for assignment on Monday in the wake of its acquisition of Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress from the Brewers.

Holaday, 28, was acquired by Texas from the Tigers late in Spring Training and saw significant action early in the season following an injury to backstop Robinson Chirinos. Holaday was quite productive in the month of May but hasn’t hit much outside of that stretch and has a collective .238/.290/.405 slash in 94 plate appearances with Texas this season. Prior to the 2016 campaign, he’d spent his entire career in the Tigers organization, shuffling back and forth between the Majors and minors while serving as a backup to Alex Avila. The presence of James McCann and Detroit’s offseason pickup of Jarrod Saltalamacchia left Holaday without a spot on the big league roster, however, and he’s out of minor league options, which left Detroit with no way to carry him in the Majors.

That he’s out of options means he’ll have to go directly onto the 25-man roster for Boston as well, as Holaday cannot be sent to the minors without first clearing waivers. He’s a career .248/.285/.356 hitter with five homers in 376 plate appearances. Holaday has thrown out 30.2 of attempted base thieves over the past three seasons, though he rates as a well below-average framing catcher, per Baseball Prospectus.

Other team notes...

Tiexiera will retire after this year.

The Jays decided not to send Aaron Sanchez to the pen, but will instead go to a 6 man rotation with Liriano added to the staff.

I'm a big Hanigan fan, so this news saddens me. I agree, though, that he has not looked right since returning from the DL.

I'm not happy about Holaday's reported weak framing skills.

Of course maybe we have misread this.

Talk is that Swihart may be done for the season. If so, could he be replaced by this ham n' egger?

He has to go on the 25 man roster

Yeah, it's either Hanigan or it's Leon. Or we carry 3 catchers, which I VERY much doubt. Reasonably certain Leon is out of minor league options.

Hanigan is playing hurt and below average catcher at best. Time to get rid of him.

April .185

May .171

June .250 (2-8)

July .091

Aug .000 (0-3)

YTD .158

On what planet is that a good stat?

Hanigan did have one good trait last year, besides being a decent defensive catcher:

Sox hitters vs LHPs in 2015 (50+ PAs)

.975 Shaw (surprise)

.918 JBJ (kindof a surprise)

.895 Hanigan

.892 Bogaerts

.845 Napoli

.843 Betts

.834 Pedey

.817 Castillo

.807 Holt

.710 HanRam

.703 Ortiz

.590 Pablo as a LHB

.142 Paplo as a RHB

Sandy Leon's bat was huge last night. If I'm a pitcher, I want my catcher to have at least a fighting chance to get on base. Hanigan has become a rally killer.

Every bat should count 1-9. Why settle?

If they shift swi to then60 man that will clear a spot i believe

Or a hanny "injury"

I still am not comfortable counting on Leon to stay this hot.

Leon is defying the universe right now. Not that I'm complaining.

Haha. That's one way to do it...

Phantom ankle injury? It's the first I've heard about it.

I'm glad that he's being DL'd rather than DFA'd, though in the long run, it might not make a difference.

I think Swihart was already moved to the 60 day but I am not sure.

Equally important is that he caught Wright last night, showing that Hannigan's one plus area as the only catcher for Wright seems to be undermined.

I think the bigger issue was getting him on the 25 man roster, not the 40 man roster.

Holaday does not have any options left, so he has to be placed on the 25 man.

Leon did a great job of catching Wright last night. His strength has always been his defense. This offense that we're getting from him is icing on the cake. Lots of icing!

Yes, Swihart was moved to the 60 day DL weeks ago.

Others on the 60 man: Workman, Pablo, C Smith & Rutledge.

soxprospect.com has us listed with 39 players, not counting Holaday, so the 40 man roster was not the issue.

With Hanigan to the 15 day DL, the 24 man roster is settled for the time being, and the September call-up day is getting closer. They'll probably put Hanigan on a "rehab assignment" that will take him to September 1st.
