Just saw it on my Twitter timeline. Sox gave up Jose Almonte and Alejandro Basabe.

Not really familiar with either of those two prospects,, but Ziegler has been consistently good his whole career and I really like him as a player, he is an instant upgrade to the pen.

With possibility of Kimbrel and Tazawa not being available this is a great move. We can't have major bullpen issues to go with shaky starting pitching.

I'm always hesitant when a proven closer is forced to go to a set up role. We see what happened to Koji this year. It's a great move, but I'm a little wary.

And the Sox still have a good farm system.

Yup. As I said, Dombrowski has done a good job with midseason acquisitions so far. He has acquired two needed pieces and hasn't given up much.

I'm curious to see how Ziegler does for us and how he likes it in Boston. A reasonable 2 yr contract + a 3rd yr Team option if all goes well enough. I'm getting ahead of myself here though. I sure hope Kimbrel's MRI brings us good news.

Hey Moon, maybe we should have gone after him during offseason instead of Kimbrel.

More I read about him, more I like. Who wants to face a submarine pitcher?

With a 63% GB rate.:) Look, he's not going to strike alot of guys out, but with our defense behind him, I think he'll do fine. He's not perfect, he might make us sweat a little, but then again so does Kimbrel... and Koji. I've had him on my fantasy team all season w/ no complaints. Even the best Closers blow saves now and again. Again, I'm very happy w/ this move.

He hardly ever lets up HRs. We needed a RP'er, so I guess I like the deal. I think the "other" Basabe might come back to haunt us, but deals like this need to be done.

Here's more from MLBTR...

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski says that he still has hope that Eduardo Rodriguez can contribute to the team this year, as Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports. That assessment could well have an impact on the team’s approach to the trade deadline. “If people would be looking to say we’re going to be getting someone more talented than Eduardo Rodriguez, it’s not going to happen,” said Dombrowski. “They’re just not out there. They’re not out there and available. Sometimes you’ve got to fix some things internally. We’ll see what happens.”

Regardless of the Red Sox’ views on Rodriguez, the team figures to be in the hunt for at least one rotation arm. As Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports, Boston has been in touch with the Padres, who could market Drew Pomeranz and/or Andrew Cashner (though the latter had a really rough outing tonight). Also, senior VP of baseball ops Frank Wren is said to have watched both Rich Hill of the Athletics and Julio Teheran of the Braves recently.

Rich Hill is my choice, assuming he can be gotten for anywhere near a reasonable price. He's a known commodity and he's pitched in the AL. I'm wary of pitchers who try to come from the NL to the AL.

I read this too this morning. Is this the first time Pomeranz & Boston have been linked to a trade rumor this year? We've (on here) been mentioning him for two months now :). I think the Hill & Ziegler trades are pretty solid and very under the radar. For that SP trade we all think should happen, that might come down to the 11th hour.

An extremely recent known commodity, but yeah he could be my top choice as well. I'm more wary of what we'd have to give up at the moment. Given his age, injury history, and the fact that he'll be a rental... It still needs to be a smart move.

DL for Kimbrel -- meniscus tear. I got the alert on my phone, but can't find it now to get a source.

That's gonna hurt us badly.

Lovely. Both of our big BP acquisitions are on the DL and won't help this team this year.

Koji and Ziegler will be your 8-9 right off the bat. Talk about an underpowered duo, lol. Ziegler somehow has a sub 3ERA with a near 1.50 WHIP. He's been uncharacteristically wild this season. With Taz having "shoulder fatigue" and Kimbrel basically out til September, DD should be in the market for another relief arm as well as a starter.

Also, anyone who wants a starter at the trade deadline will be spending far beyond a "reasonable" amount. Rich Hill is healthy and has been dominant in his two starts back. He's gonna return a king's ransom if only for the lack of financial commitment, performance and timing.

And we'll need Kelly to contribute right off the bat when he returns in a week or so.......

Have we had this much injury to our 40 man roster? Hell Brock Holt gets hurt checking to see which way the wind is blowing....

I know the perception is this wasn't the "good Basabe" but this guys stock was skyrocketing, impressing scouts all year, so for all we know there are teams out there who view him as the better prospect right now.

In light of Kimbrel injury, it's a great move that we got Ziegler. We can't keep all the prospects. Especially those in Class A.
