Looks like both will be on the DL and the Sox call up Ramirez and Swihart...my guess is Swihart will be used mostly in Lf while Holt is out so we dont lose that LHH in the lineup.

No surprise on Smith, but when did Holt suffer a concussion?

Holt plays hard. I am sure they will give us some information on how the concussion occurred. It is interesting that they will be bringing up Swihart to play LF so soon. He was rushed at catcher and now rushed even more in LF. I am interested to see how he handles himself out there. If I could give him one piece of advice it would be to stay out of Bradley's way.

This elbow thing will probably be chronic for Smith. I am assuming that he will not contribute very little this season. It is better for me to lower my expectations.

I think TJS will be in Smiths future. Swihart in LF will not be like rushing him as a catcher. He should be fine out there. from all reports he looks a lot better than they thought he would this quickly. Not saying he a GG Ofer, just that hes looked really good out there...

I think Swihart could be ok at LF with his athleticism and speed but first few line drive hits directly above his head could be tough to get used to especially playing in front of the Monster.

Castillo is really in the doghouse, huh?
He lost his job to utility infielder and now a catcher gets the call ahead of him to play LF. Maybe he doesn't care. He escaped the hell hole of Cuba and has more money than he ever dreamed of. Maybe he is just enjoying a better life. He gets paid for the next 6 1/2 years.

Smith to the DL should surprise no one. That guy has a crazy delivery and his arm popped or something in ST.

Ted is probably correct, he is likely done for the season. If TJS is in the cards, and it sure looks that way, forget about Carson smith until very late 2017 or 2018 ST. I wish we had Miley back.

I love what Swihart brings to the field each day. As suggested above he may not be GG immediately and there will be a bunch of oh f*** moments, but once he learns just enough, he should be fine. Speed can cover a lot of problems.

I hope Holt is okay. Didn't he get hit in the head a few days ago?

He may be lacking certification stamp as an official bust but Castillo is on the outside looking in.

$10. mil a year would console my embarrassment if I were in his position.

Dumb signing "Full Stop".

Thought I read Swihart was an OFer until Boston transitioned him a catcher? I know he has more value as catcher, but playing a little LF doesn't destroy that value necessarily. Could up his value in the long run even... But he's gotta hit.

Is the manager covered under the mandatory concussion protocols? It might be useful down the road.

Lol

Holt does have concussion issues and has had them in the past. I can't prove a flying Spaghetti monster in space causes some concussions either but...

Exactly.

And we do have a decent sample that seems to indicate that he can hit MLB pitching.

Yes, hes played OF, SS, and was a pt catcher his jr and sr years in HS.

I agree. I dont think it hurts his value at all. Hes got a little ways to go as a catcher, but im sure GMs all know this. But the kid is very athletic and should be ok. Hes getting plenty of time behind the dish in AAA and dont doubt he will become at least average on D as a catcher. Hopefully better than aveage...but Youre right. He needs to make sure his offense is good because thats gonna be his ticket.

Who knows, maybe Farrell will have him put the gear on for a game while hes up.

He was a shortstop in high school.

NESN (or whatever) broadcast is saying HOlt got concussion diving for ground ball last week.

I thought Swihart looked good in LF. Made a nice play grabbing the ball off the wall with his bare hand and firing it into second to hold the batter to a single. Made a nice running catch close to the foul line and stands. He looked comfortable out there. With his upside as a hitter, I have no problem with him platooning with Young while giving him the occasional game behind the plate catching and letting Holt be a UT guy again.

LOL!!!

I loved Zim, but that could have been true for him sometimes, too. Dude would take on a wall if it got in his way.

it's being reported Carson Smith will have TJS. a big blow.

His parents should have done this for him in HS.

Our medical staff never seems to pick up these issues. According to what Cafardo said on a pregame show, Seattle was aware that Smith was at risk for this happening. This issue didn't come as a big surprise.

C'mon... everyone who saw him throw a ball knew he was at risk. I'm certainly no medical person nor am I a scout but the first time I saw him throw I said. "OMG! This guy's a walking Tommy John case!".

Knowing he's at risk isn't the same thing as knowing he's going to be injured. He pitched ok last year and they had no reason to know his problem was going to manifest itself this year. They hoped for the best and got the worst.

We should definitely be glad we don't have Chris Sale and his inverted W. Dat injury risk...

Sale/Strasburg/Fernandez/Harvey among others actually.

Rather odd that Smith is not having Dr. Andrews do the Tommy John surgery. Andrews is the renowned surgeon who originated this surgical procedure on Tommy John, and seems to generally be the go-to-guy, when players experience arm problems, particularly pitchers. Smith may want to talk to his catcher, CV, as to how his arm has responded after Dr. Andrews did his thing.

Altcheck is on the same level as Andrews in the field of sports medicine, and has also performed many notable TJS's over the years. In fact, Altcheck and Andrews are professional acquaintances and have written at least one book on sports medicine together. Smith is in good hands.
