yikes - prescient - pusillanimous

I had a high school teach back in 1972 that would give us extra credit if we found certain words in the course of our reading outside of our classroom......believe it or not I came across it in a Sporting News Article.....anyone remember when it was only 25 cents? My weekly ritual.....riding bike to drug store to purchase baseball cards and weekly Sporting News.

I used to get the Sporting News every week. My aunt got me a subscription to it after the subscription to Mad Magazine ran out. She always got me great gifts!!!! She got me my first transistor radio. A pocked sized Panasonic when everyone was still saying that products from Japan were s***. I listened to the Conigliaro beaning on that radio!

Anyway, Sporting News had every box score for every major league game. It was great! I could also follow the ABA and my then favorite player who had jumped from UMASS to The Virginia Squires.

Price wasn't solid tonight leaving many balls in the zone and the Yankees were hitting him. I expected JF to go the bullpen in the 6th after one of many first up hits. Farrel didn't look like he was managing to win and left him in one batter too long. Price can pitch but is having trouble leaving fastballs belt high in the middle of the plate. Major league hitters can hit those hard and did tonight.

We know for a fact that this month Farrell has had no problem pulling starters early. But the Sox are now in the playoffs and a very good bet to win the ALE, so I think last night was kind of a test run. Come the playoffs, I think Price will have a shorter leash than usual. Last night he was lousy early and late in his 6.1 innings and just 89 pitches. Were the same thing to happen in the playoffs, I think Price doesn't come out for the 6th inning.

Agreed on all points.

agreed - i expect the bullpen will be on speed dial the third time through the order no matter who pitches

You sure brought back a lot of memories with this post. Mad Magazine, the Sporting News, transistor radio, and Dr. J and the ABA; all very important parts of my youth. Those were good times.

I also used to get a supplement to the UMASS Daily Collegian called "The Red Jock" ( that is back when UMASS teams were the Redmen ). I was able to follow Julius's exploits in Virginia better. Back then the Squires played in three different home arenas. It was a great time to be a basketball fan for me.

Kimbrel closed again tonight with a 2 run lead. He seems to have difficulty throwing strikes consistently, getting ahead and then throwing a strike when he needs to. I had speculated that maybe the mound at Yankee stadium through him off but tonights against the Blue Jays he walked 2 to put the going ahead run at the plate, so I guess is that we either win or lose with Kimbrel and his inconsistencies. To be fair to him, the umpire did not five him a strike nor actually Uehara a strike for the same location, which the K gun indicated was a strike. That said, a pitcher shouldn't put himself in a position to need a call like that, because he has nibbled to put the count at 3 and 2.

Another tightrope act. Ugh

"the doc" played a game in the pit in Orono back in the day. I didn't see the game but a friend did. Forever underrated player when people talk about the greats in the game.

Playoff baseball fast approaching. Top notch starting pitching will be run out and the best relievers to keep the games close. October weather can be on the nippy side so we can't have our closer doing his best impression of Rick Ankiel. What to do? We already are in jeopardy of losing home field advantage to Cleveland. We need Kimbrel to step up or we need and alternative.

Agreed. And that alternative will be hard to find. The Sox have shortened the game to six offensive innings for their opposition with Ziegler et.al. for the 7th, Koji for the 8th, and Kimbrel for the 9th. My solution (FWIW) is to give Kimbrel one more chance to get people out - in the 6th inning - and move the others back one inning. If he can't do the job in the 6th then he sits and Kelly takes his place.

At this point I'm in it to win it.

@brianmacp Manfred: The Red Sox were offered the opportunity to rescind the Pomeranz-Espinoza trade, but they declined.

That's at least a try at fixing the problem. Kelly throws as hard and is on the plate but only really has two good pitches at this point. The Red Sox were making the excuse that Kimbrel's posture was off and that he knew about it and was improving but not enough clearly in the last game. Sounds like a guy with his experience would have been working on it more effectively since he has now been off the last 3 times out.

When were they given this opportunity? Wasn't that shortly after the trade?

Price went today. He is a workhorse and has a lot of innings this year and in the past. He, like other pitchers, lose something over time and with use. Hopefully they get smarter and make up for the loss of velocity. Price was very cautious today trying not to give in to hitters. He got good defensive support but he wound up giving more walks than normal and they do hit him a little more. The result he was used up after just 5 innings and we went to our BP who also did well. The bottom line is I doubt if Price can be that dominant starter we would like to have. He may be good enough to win, but we will have to generate more offense to allow him to win.

I think I saw Price pitched the most innings of any starter in the league this year.

There is a large correlation between getting the most innings from your starters and getting to the playoffs....

After seeing many pitchers struggle here their first year, and especially seeing Porcello recently............ I like the Price deal a lot.

Want a mind f***..... just think if we kept Miley and how good he would have been this year....... I'm talking cy-young.........

I am thinking of 6 more years at $30 mil a year. I just hope we don't do a long term high money deal for another ageing starter because they probably can't hold up for as long and the ability diminishes with tons of innings and years. Price was good this year and may be for a couple of more but I doubt he can hang in there for more than that.

When the Sox relegated Sandoval to the bench on opening day (before the shoulder issue became an issue) they were making the statement that having a huge salary didn't guarantee playing time. I can't help but wonder if that attitude will carry over into the playoffs.

That certainly narrows it down...

What's the difference? The trade was in July. The trade deadline was August. This didn't happen until later. I answered Kimmi's question in a fair manner.

Another poor white knight attempt by our resident fedora owner. Sad!
