Latos DFA'd. Why can't the Sox do that with Buchholz?

He is 6-2 with an ERA of 4.62. And he can be ours for $3m for one year. Thats a huge improvement over Buchholz or Kelly. Grab him!

Latos can't possibly be worse then the ass juice we've been trotting out there, it wouldn't hurt.

lol.

Not sure if ass juice is a step up from using phallic references all the time.

But I laughed.

In a case like this what team gets priority in claiming him? Does he have to clear waivers first or can a team just sign him?

I can never keep some of this s*** straight so I am asking you folks. Can we get him? Will it cost a draft pick or players?

Latos barely allowed any runs for 4 starts, then he allowed almost as many runs as innings pitched. He's done

Is he injured? Why would you say that he is done?

This explains the procedure pretty well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Designated_for_assignment

A few comments:

1) Latos does have more than 5 years service time, so he can't be sent to the minors without his consent.

2) He would have to clear waivers for the Red Sox to pick him up as a free agent. I doubt he would clear waivers; some team lower in the standings would almost certainly take a shot at him as it would only cost them around $300K (prorated portion of the MLB minimum salary).

3) More than likely, if they want him, the Red Sox would have to trade for him in the next week, which would cost players; I'm pretty sure that draft picks cannot be traded by major league baseball teams.

I was concerned about drafting another high school pitcher. Trey Ball has started to pitch better but when will he be ready for the big leagues? His progression has been slow. Gonna be 22 soon. Looks like a wasted pick. Edited by d-money

Bumgarner, Kershaw, Greinke, Wainright, Sabbathia, Halladay & Hamels are just a few names that were drafted out of high school.

MLB Pipeline had Mooney #1 overall and Baseball Prospectus described him as being as talented as anyone in the draft. Whether or not Trey Ball pans out can't influence their decision.

It also sounds like the Sox spent an awful lot of time scouting the kid, despite the fact that they didn't think he'd be there at 12.

If a team claims a player off waivers and has a viable claim as described above, his current team (the "waiving team") may choose one of the following options:

-arrange a trade with the claiming team for that player within two business days of the claim; or

-do nothing and allow the claiming team to assume the player's existing contract, pay the waiving team a waiver fee, and place the player on its active major league roster.

In other words, a team that claims a player off waivers, pays his contract-not the minimum, so Latos may clear waivers and become a FA.

I'm actually very happy we are taking a "long look". We should not be drafting lesser players out of some sense of urgency over the need to get SP'er help ASAP.

Last time I checked, draft picks (The player not the pick) could be traded after the World Series. Am I wrong on that or has that changed in any way?

Even if Trey Ball took another 2-3 years and if he comes close to his potential I'd be seriously fine with that.

Because if you're 22 and you haven't reached the Majors, obviously you're a wasted pick.

There's a grace period after which they can be traded, but when it ends I'm not sure. After the World Series sounds a little too quick.

I am not saying that. Top 7 pick and he has struggled to make progress. I am not given up on him but he hasn't gotten up to Portland yet. Has he?

@jmastrodonato I'd bet on Roenis Elias winning fifth starter spot for Red Sox.

7 IP, 0 R, 7 K tonight.

Over last five starts: 36 IP, 8 ER, 40 K, 8 BB.
