Per WEEI, ERod is experiencing renewed discomfort in his knee and is out indefinitely. My guess is he had more than just a little patellar subluxation. He probably has persistent laxity and might need the joint tightened up surgically.

DD had better be working the phones. This is terrible news. ERod could be just another in a long line of pitching prospects that we waited for breathlessly who become distant memories within a few short years. I hope not.

this is terrible news (for us Red Sox fans). get ready to say goodbye to some of our prospects......

Yup, and the worst thing is, the price just went up.

I hardly think it's panic time yet.

Price is going to be fine.

Porcello just had his first really bad start since coming off the DL last August. He'll be fine.

Wright is at least a #4/5, possibly better.

Buchholz is admittedly not looking good, but we've seen this from him before and we've also seen him turn it around.

Kelly looks ready based on AAA results...let's see what he's got.

There is cause for concern, but not for desperation...not yet.

We can also predict that Buchholz will start his off season by the All Star Break, creating another vacancy.

And you are basing this after you reviewed his MRI's and x-rays?

There aren't that many high quality starters available at this moment and lack of SP depth will hurt this team. Two likely trade partners Guardians and Mets are playing well and won't give away their starters unless they are absolutely blown away at the offer. I can see few names available from rock bottom teams such as Julio Teheran, Drew Pomeranz, or Ervin Santana but none of them should be tempting to Sox fans. Hope DD comes up with something brilliant and fixes SP problems and doesn't make the same mistake.

You may not know this but Jacko is a medical Doctor and former college pitcher.

So while he may not have reviewed the advanced images of the knee, he does have plenty of experience in these matters.

come on FJ. we are Sox fans. we were born to panic.

i always liked Kelly and have no problem giving him the ball every 5th day. but to me E-Rod was the #2 SP of this team and would be a great presence on a playoff roster. that role IMO will not be filled by Kelly. (or anyone on the staff currently).

Anyways, i expected DD to trade for a SP by the deadline even before this news broke so i definitely think something gets done now.....

Wow...relax kids. Its a knee, not a shoulder.

My guess is DD was already planning on trading a couple prospects/players for another starter anyway since our depth is crap and the rotation hasnt been anything special. IMHO, We need another starter regardless if ERod is ok or not. The pen and offense has carried this team so far. That will work in the regular season, but not in the playoffs. Another starter is still a need.

On the pre-game radio show, they said that Smith is still feeling his elbow grab. They predicted that the DL will be in the not too distant future for him.

Most likely will go on the DL. Doesnt look good though.

We have been pretty solid without him...so although its not good news, im not too terribly worried about it.

honestly this result pushes me away from buying new talent this year, not toward it. Most of this team's keepers are here next year and we have some serious prospects on the way over the next 18 months.

If we can't beat entropy in the rotation this year (and acquiring another starter would be treading water at best) the correct decision may be to take what you can get this year, play it out with the horses you have and load up for 2017, get Eddie healthy, get Smith healthy, get a development year for Shaw, JBJ and CVm learn what we have with Porcello, Wright and price, finally get free of the conundrum that is Buchholz, and get a chance to slap some things together in FA to round out the edges. We don't have to be frontline competitors every single year. The way parity is in the league that's a completely unrealistic expectation even if it wasn't for the dead money on the roster right now.

It would suck to lose Big Papi's last year as a contention window year, but roster logic is roster logic -- you can only fight entropy up to a point and I'm not in favor of throwing good money (and especially good prospects) after bad in a year that isn't to be.

The problem is that the FA market is barren for next offseason, and that is only going to increase the price of starting pitching. If they can find a dependable arm at a palatable price this year, why wait? This team is not lacking for resources. After dropping a load of money and prospects on Price/Kimbrel, conservative measures went out the window. There needs to be consistency. Can't cross your legs and arms after you blew your wad trying to gain contender status.

Of course not, that's really uncomfortable. You're supposed to splay across the bed like someone who just fell backwards off of a hotel balcony onto the roof of a car.

I'm actually starting to like you. It makes it harder for the day when we inevitably battle each other to the death.

LOL. UN, you are right. DD came in, shot the wad, got the big ticket purchases and told the world "we're back". Thus far, mid May, you are. Yet, you have one fatal flaw which can be acquired because of the depth of minor league talent. You have the stuff in the minors not just to get a good pitcher, but to acquire an elite one. You also don't have a AAA guy right now who could be brought up mid season and dominate a la ERod and Severino last yr. If you don't acquire a starter this yr, it would be damning. This is apparently Papi's last yr. The offense is killing it. Even without Smith (who gets TJS IMO) your pen should be lights out. But that rotation will not win you a world series. Have Price right himself, get a top notch #2 (or even someone to supplant Price as the 1) and roll into the playoffs as the favorites in the AL

Not every trade is the Kimbrel trade or ... Atleast it shouldn't be. Any trade involving our current blue chip prospects should be for a cost controlled totr SP. not for someone already making FA type $.

Cost controlled or no, you need a TOTR starter (I like the acronym btw). And the FA market this offseason is so bad that it basically guarantees that any good starter you get is controlled beyond 2016, so that's a plus

Go figure. I hate the TOTR acronym almost as much as I hate you. That's a lot of goddamn hate.

I don't believe our SP situation is solvable via the FA market. Not any more.

You haven't been taking your happy pills UN?. What have I told you about abruptly stopping them?

I don't take happy pills, I take happy "shots". You suck at doctoring. Btw, gom sends his regards, lol.

Dammit. I 100% agree with the MFY fan again. This site is bizarro world for me sometimes.
