From today's Herald:

For Kelly, who’s on the DL in April for a third consecutive year, this could prove to be a classic case of an avoidable injury that got worse because he didn’t speak up. He said he felt a little off coming into the start, but thought it was typical soreness.

“I thought I would be able to get through it,” Kelly said. “Leading up to the start, I thought I would be able to give it a go. I was working on it every single day trying to get ready to go. I went out there and played catch, and obviously playing catch, you really don’t put anything on the ball.

You can't build a staff around Kelly and Buchholz since neither of them is able to go every 5th day.

Apparently, DUMBrowski had a "pointed" meeting in Farrell's office after the game. This team has the talent to compete for a WC spot, but I don't think the ship's captain has any idea how to get this young team there.

Starting to think Kelly may fits better as a reliever. The power and the wipeout slider could be deadly, similar to Wade Davis who sucked as a starter, morphed into a closer.

Kelly was coming off that 8-0 run man.

Wins don't prove a pitcher's effectiveness. That run was fool's gold which included a 5 inning performance where he gave up 9 hits and 5 earned runs as well as a 2.1 inning masterpiece where he gave up 5 hits and 3 runs. In most of the other performances, he continued to pitch into jams, but was fortunate to get out of them.

You're starting to think this just now?

We're Talksox hipsters.

We liked Hanley at 1b before it was cool.

We thought Kelly should be in the bullpen before it was cool.

We thought Panda needed to be benched before it was cool.

Unless Hannigan forgot where he wanted the ball to thrown, kelly seemed to have trouble throwing strikes. It is a pattern he has shown. he throws the ball hard, he has a great whatever, yada, yada, yada. hard to imagine that he isn't better than he is. Many of us have said for two years that he should be in the bullpen. Maybe - I wish that it could be somebody elses though. Unless he comes back healthy, pitches well, and lasts, I'd bet on him being gone. i don't think DD is going to want to wait for this guy to all of a sudden turn in to a pitcher.

He won't be gone. He'll either be thrown in the bullpen or sent to AAA to work on himself.

He had trouble throwing striked because he was injured. That's even worse than ineffectiveness to a certain degree.

Trading Lackey for Kelly and Craig was a swell idea. The really ironic part is that the money they're paying Craig for nothing would have covered Lackey's salary for 3 seasons, 2015-2017. Oh well, Theo Epstein says thanks to his old pals.

This move has ended being a bad one, no doubt, though I hold out hope that it can still be somewhat salvaged. However, at the time it was made, there was some very sound rationale for making this move.

Kelly can come back and be very valuable - just not as a starter. As far as the names bandied about for the next start, sign me up for Owens. Elias, Owens and Johnson are all risky - might as well take the one with the best ceiling.

That's absolutely unfair. They didn't force Beckett and Lackey to be binge-eating, beer-drinking douchebags.

Yes, it was The players fault. Why would that get Lackey mad. The chicken and Beer didn't hold him hostage

But remember that in that offseason Lackey and Beckett played the "media victim" card, and that was the beginning of the end for Beckett, and Lackey held a grudge there that became a full-blown shitstorm when the Sox wouldn't negotiate the minimum salary clause he had built into his contract. The problems between the team and Lackey started way back.

I also wonder if he felt a lack of support as well for 2011 ... whether they knew TJS was coming but they did not have his back publicly as he flailed through the season. That is more speculation on my part of course.

Dave Dombrowski:"People make it sound like(Eduardo) Rodriguez is out for months. He pitches 5 innings this weekend. It won't be long"

And that wasn't also the fault of the FO?

I'm thinking that Lackey and the rest of the boys must have been pissed that the menu was limited to just all the beer you can drink and all the chicken you can eat at any time in the locker room. I'm just thinking that maybe the total lack of anything regarding discipline might have had something to do with it. Everybody tends to be happy until they hear the word no.

The whole "Lackey was unhappy" theory and the reasons for it are speculation. Maybe Lackey didn't want ti acknowledge the arm injury because it would kick in the 1 year extension at the minimum.

I agree - it's all speculation - not unfounded or unreasonable speculation, but there's no hard evidence. All we know is that they jettisoned him and got crap in return.

Yep. And we don't know which party was mad at the other party and for what.

Chicken and beer and the very public dispute that happened afterwards is not speculation in the least. The fact that he did not want to pitch for the league minimum was also very much a fact. After that, the lines blur.
