Good point. But as much as I hate the f***ing midget (Rosenthal) I can't remember the last time he was wrong about a big announcement like this.

LOL

Glad there's an opt out then.

If he pitches at an elite level for those three years, he will opt out. In four years, 30 million a year will be the going rate for "almost elite" pitching. It wasn't even ten years ago that a 20 mill/year contract was a big deal, now a guy with decent speed and some pop can get 20 per, no problem. That's the way I look at it.

I'm sure I won't want him to opt out if he's pitching well enough to even consider opting out, but frankly, it would probably be a good thing if he did. I still don't see it happening. I can't see any GM offering him more than $31 mil for more than 4 years at age 33.

It all depends how much longer the current rate of salary inflation continues.

That's right up the Yankees alley. ;)

I get that. I just don't see a bigger contract happening for a 33 year old pitcher.

Don't know yet if his contract is frontloaded, backloaded, or evenly distributed. Decent chance his last 4 years are at less than $31m/yr.

he may not opt out actually. the contract's AAV is backloaded at 31mm in 2019 and 32mm aav for the remainder of the contract.

When a multi billionaire chooses to purchase a professionial sports team, most of the other billionaires tend to laugh at him or her. We are fortunate to have an ownsership team that doesn't mind to listen to all of the other ******** about how they should be spending their money. We got Price and they don't. We have a get it done GM. The future of this team looks very good.

unless he somehow opts out in 3 years.

Probably be the idea situation for the Sox. Price has three outstanding seasons and then opts out. Sox wouldn't have to worry about the back end of the contract and by then some of the young arms (Espinosa and Kopech) would be ready.

FTR, I am shuddering. Big time.

And that's all I will say about that.

Woohoo for Price!

We will take up a collection to buy you a blanket to help you with the shuddering.

ot is the going rate for an ace. That doesn't make us the Yankees. Big talent doesn't come cheap.

I knew DD would land him. The Cubs were not going to invest $370 million in 2 starting pitchers. DD acquired him in Detroit and then did him a huge favor trading him to a contender with the best offense in baseball in his walk year.

Lets get Cueto too!!

Relax! Any other SP coming to Boston would come via trade. I think the Sox will look at the Winter Meetings to upgrade their SP, but if they don't I can see them going to Florida with what they got. A huge upgrade from last spring.

"4:43pm: Price will earn $30MM in each season from 2016-18, $31MM in 2019 and $32MM per year from 2020-22, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick (via Twitter)."

I still think he will opt out. Depends on how he does next 3 years. If he's still considered one of the best pitchers, he could easily get 5 or 6 years and more total money at a lower AAV, or maybe even higher AAV the way salaries are skyrocketing. He'll only be 1 year older than Greinke is now.

Sox have some good young arms in the lower minors that could move in to the rotation when Price opts out after three years. Both Espinosa and Kopech look promising.

I could care less about a hypothetical opt out at this point. I'm really excited about watching the Sox play next year.... not a feeling I had for a while.

I'm with you. i am not going to look 3 years down the trail. We have one of the tops in the game. Does not affect the future of this team in any other than a positive way. It is all good. I can't wait for the spring. People might be shaking heads right now but I doubt they are laughing at us as they have been doing lately. He is a leader - he is physically fit - he is cocky confident. Great for us.

I like the opt out. I f we get 3 great years out of Price and he opts out, so be it. Great timing.

it certainly adds potential value to both sides of the deal.

Oh yeah, this is the first time I've been really excited for Sox baseball since realizing the 2014 season was going to suck. Price opting out is just another positive. It means we aren't overpaying for his likely declining years, and, more importantly, that he had a very good first 3 years. So I'll just consider it as Price at 3/$90 for now. Would be a disaster if he inexplicably falls apart like Lincecum/Verlander though.

I'm not a fan of Price, but I am glad we signed him. He was the best available SP we could sign. Love that no draft picks are lost. Anyone thinking about an opt out is just being doom and gloom. Enjoy that we have him. No one knows what three years down the road will look like. Great day for a Sox fan!

DD signed the best starter available and traded for the best reliever available.

I'm going to let that sink in, and worry about 2020 another time. Hell yes Dumbo.

The sox had to do this. There is no question. Will he be an albatross in 4 years? Probably. But will he be immensely helpful in 2016? Absolutely. Dombrowski was brought in with one mission, win now. And you should do that. I still think you need one more pitcher, but as it stands, you're definitely playoff contenders and maybe the favorites in the ALE

Been away for awhile, bought a house and have been busy all summer. But had to come on for this! I like the move, don't care about the money lol

And for those saying he won't opt out at 33 cause he wont be able to do better then 4/120mish lets not forget Grienke is 32 and the rumored offers for him are in the 5 to 6 year range at 30M+. If Price stays a top flight SP the next 3 years he will surely opt out imo.

All in all.... Yaaaay! Hope everyone is doing well :)
