Guerra, Margot and 2 others on their way to the Pads. Looks like Koji is a setup man again

Damn I called this deal, or well pretty close to it! Good deal for the Sox though, Margot and Guerra didn't fit into their plans. They still have pieces to make more deals. I can see them signing O'Day too.

Looks like the Red Sox fans don't like the deal, they still have Moncada, Devers, Espinoza, Benintendi, and Johnson for a strong top 5. After that it gets dicey but thats still a top 10 farm system. Their bullpen improves, if they add O'Day they'd have a pretty good bullpen with Uehara, Kimbral, and O'Day.

I like the deal. Sox got one of the top power armed closers without giving up Moncada - Benintendi - Espinosa. If Betts ends up in center Margot would be blocked by him. Bogaerts blocks Guerra at short. Carlos Asuaje and Logan Allen are the other two pieces. Asuaje is behind Moncada at 2B on the depth chart and Allen is behind Kopech and Espinosa on the depth chart of young pitchers that are in the low minors. We gave up quality minor leaguers, but no one that is rated tops at their position. If anyone thinks we are going to fix the bullpen and get a number 1 starter and not give up anything they are dreaming.

I agree that I think they sign O'Day in the very near future. Who do they add as the LHP out of the pen? I think if a complete makeover is happening a lefty pieces needs added to the overhaul.

Henry Owens or Brian Johnson converts to a bullpen arm and is your lefty out of the bullpen

Looks like DUMBrowski didn't like what he found with the due diligence on Chapman.

Kimbrel is under team control through 2018. Chapman is a free agent after this season.

@ScottLauber: Kimbrel is "probably our major acquisition of this winter as far as the trade market is concerned," Dombrowski said. #RedSox

It is a slight overpay and that is rubbing some the wrong way. But what do we expect....We are not dealing from strength. A slight overpay should be expected and we have a great pitcher that is signed for the next three years. This is the right path for this team to be on.

I can't get excited about Chapman because he would be a rental...not interested....sign him out of FA for 2017 if you still want him then.

I like that the Sox got Kimbrel. I don't like the package they gave up for him. Hoped they could get more for Margot. However, I won't be made if/when Kimbrel consistently closes the door in the 9th inning.

Wasn't the book on Kimbrel that he was set for flaming out pretty soon? That seemed to be the way it was painted when Atlanta dealt him.

He may not be the Kimbrel of 2012, but he is still better than almost every other closer in baseball.

This is a big dominant bullpen arm added. It is a good start to overhauling the bullpen. I see the pen as definitely including Koji, Tazawa and Kimbrel, possibly with Kelly. Do people think Workman might be a possibility?

This seems like an overpay. Giving up a top 25 prospect and a top 100 prospect for an expensive reliever? Why not just pay the 30-40 million on Darren O'Day and save the prospects?

I miss Ben already.

Will you miss last place?

Everyone should have expected this. Dombrowski has never been shy about dealing prospects. Good news is, he's usually right on the ones he deals. We'll see.

TBD, Workman and Lane would round out that pen. O'day and call it an offseason for that group?

I love the fact that the Sox got Kimbrel. He is one of the best relief pitchers in the game, and he will no doubt make our team better.

That said, I hate the deal. It is definitely an overpay, and IMO, a pretty steep one. Very good relief pitchers, including closers, can be found for much cheaper.

Trading four prospects for a cost-controlled Kimbrel would have been an overpay. Signing Kimbrel in free agency for 2 yrs/$24 mil or 3 yrs/$37 mil would have been an overpay. Giving up four prospects and having to pay that salary is a double whammy.

Dombrowski filled a need, and a pretty big one at that, for which I am happy. However, I think he could have made better use of our resources.

He was right. This was painful.

That is one good thing. Even though his salary is a bit steep, at least we didn't trade a bunch of prospects for a one year player.

Thank goodness. Save the farm!

Somewhere, Ben is rolling over in his proverbial grave.

Too bad for him.

It is too bad for him, that he built such a terrific farm system, and he will not be here to see the fruits of his labor.

I am not opposed to Dombrowski trading away some prospects. It has to be done and I understand that. I am not opposed to any of the particular prospects that were traded being traded. But that doesn't mean you give them away for less than they are worth.
