And what if he pulled a Jon Lester and had an amazing season to the point where his price tag skyrocketed up and out of the arena in which the Red Sox were comfortable? Locking up 26 year old pitchers with good peripherals who are coming off of great seasons is a smart allocation of resources, regardless of how well or poorly their first 3 starts may have went.

Dishing out wads of candy on what MIGHT be is a surefire way to get yourself screwed with bad contracts. Saying Porcello's 2014 was his best year hides that it's the first of five with an ERA below 4.00. Wouldn't you want to wait half this season to judge if that's a fluke before paying him like a number one pitcher, which he most certainly isn't?

He isn't being paid like a number 1. Kershaw and Scherzer are number 1's and they're making 30 million per year. Furthermore, Porcello's ERA looks far less damning when you look at his FIP and consider the fact that the Tigers set him up to fail by giving a guy who pitches to contact an awful defense behind him.

Edit: also, I'd rather have the team paying big money for what might be than what has been.

Three things I'd like to cover here.

1. Pussello? Grow the f*** up. You're a grown man.

2. Lester is 31 years old and is going to be paid 155 million dollars over the next 6 years.

3. Look at the market for pitching right now and honestly tell me 82 million over 4 years is ridiculous for Porcello. It's far from absurd when you look at what other pitchers who aren't 26 and coming off of career years are getting.

We can disagree about whether he is worth $20 million/year but don't tell me to grow up, punk. Let's get that straight. If I hang a nickname on him, it comes with the territory if you play like s***. Today, he threw like puss.

He also gets paid much higher than number 3 starters.

Glad that s*** show is over. Hope masterson decides to pitch well.

Hopefully, he starts building some velocity. 87-88 is not going to cut it over the course of the season.

No, because pitching just slightly bettet than he has so far guarantees a 100+ million contract because of his age. We get it, you don't like the contract. But that's the fruit the market is bearing and whining incessantly about it is not going to change that. Smoke a blunt and chill the f*** out bro.

Lester is also sucking in Chicago. He hasn't able to pitch past 6 inning. He has 155M, I want no part of that.

This is as dumb as judging the Porcello contract because of three starts. For the love of God use some logic.

Well, they probably won't lose 130 games this year, but so far, the most promising performances are by Holt (a bench player, since he isn't being paid enough to start), Boggaerts, and by what's happening in Pawtucket. The FO theory that all will be well as long as everyone has a career year may have worked miraculously in 2013, but the strategy of ridding the team of all its strength (pitching) in order to make room for routine hitting is a bit too Zen for my taste.

+100 for your posts in this game thread. Thank you for being the voice of reason.

You sexy, logical bastard. If you were a woman I would make beautiful, intelligent, logic using babies with you.

Are you talking to yourself? LOL

The Porcello hate isn't really warranted, I believe he is the one pitcher on this team who will be fine. However, this rotation in general is very concerning and I really don't think they can go far with this rotation as is.

If I ruled the world, I would make the Patriots' Day Gamethread. If I were a pothead, I would make the 4/20 gamethread. If I were from Boston, I would make the Marathon Monday gamethread. I think you get my point.

$20 mil a year will put a target on anyone's back. Especially when it's handed out before he's pitched a single pitch for the Red Sox, before we give him half a season to find out if last year (a "career year" that was hardly stellar) was a fluke. I think there's a lot of mistrust for Ben due to the perception he had one of the most valuable chips in Lester at the deadline and has dealt it into Porcello, a clearly inferior pitcher.

That post was supposed to be quoting BTR, but I was posting from my phone, which always yields some......interesting results.

No, actually I don't. Is this more whining because the majority said you can't do IGTs?

If you want to make the GT, just do it. You couldn't do any worse than YOTN's mojo did today.

Yes. I would so love to do tomorrow's gamethread. 2 game slide? Even I can get us out of that.

He threatened to ban me if I did.

I seriously think this game thread and mojo stuff is way overplayed. But by all means continue with your magical thinking.
