Awesome!! We rocked Philadelphia 8-0!

Just some thoughts after the game:

1. Hanley Ramirez is a STUD. Looks like we made the right decision there.

2. Dustin Pedroia finally looks healthy! Laser show lit it up for 2 solo shots!

3. Clay Buccholz looks to be having one of his 'Lights Out' seasons, which is exactly what we need. He is dog-awful when he's bad, but absurdly good when he's good. Looks like we caught him on an 'up' season!

4. Mookie Betts looked as advertised. Methinks, we have our leadoff hitter of the future. Looks like Ellsbury but with more power early. It took a while for Ellsbury to develop to more than a slap hitter. Betts is a keeper! I know he's going to have ups and downs, as all rookies do, but allow me to over-react today!

5. Not related to the game but, Porcello signed to a 4 year 80m dollar extension, is he really worth 20m per year? I'm hoping that contract doesn't blow up in our face.

6. Ortiz didn't have the best game, but supportive of his new teammates.

7. We've got offense! If we can get the pitching, we'll be just fine.

8. Just the cherry on top - Stankees start the season with a loss to the Jays. Tanaka got shelled. Great! We're #1 in the AL East. Let's keep up the great work, Let's go Red Sox!!!

I am nervous - to be on the cusp of an undefeated season like this. I hope you all appreciate the history that is being made here.

The Porcello deal is an overpay. At the same time, does he have a reasonable probability of providing sufficient WAR for the investment? Yes. Absolutely.

I have no idea if Betts is going to be a star - but he is doing everything a star does. (handled every jump in level given to him quickly) It's one thing for us to say "slow down, let's be patient with him". But it's another when he is forcing us to believe in him.

HamRam will hit, and hit a lot. Question is entirely about keeping him upright.

Pedroia of 2013/2014 level offense is a well above average starter (when you consider the defense). Pedroia with his pop back is a legitimate MVP candidate. I am not betting on the latter, but clearly day 1 is positive.

Of course besides the small sample size caveat - Philadelphia is a bad team.

It is hard not to overreact, and certainly Philly sucks - although Hamels doesn't. So there is that. But much better to start with a W and some very positive signs of ST carry-over, than not! And Pedroia being healthy is a wonderful thing. Best way for him to not injure his thumb again by sliding head-first, is just to hit the ball out of the park..... ;-)

What I learned is Porcello is terrible and he shouldn't have been given that contract. Total garbage pitcher tbh.

Pedroia made an out. He is on the decline and his contract is a waste of money. He needs to get gone in a trade foer a pitcher so we can open up second base for Mookie and get Castillo back from AAAA.

I wouldn't say all that. They would have won 10-0 if I was GM ;)

Seriously though, Porcello didn't pitch (I expect him to do just fine, but probably not $20 mil fine), Miley didn't pitch, Masterson didn't pitch. None of the bullpen acquisitions pitched.

My biggest gripe with the FO by far is Sandoval and he was 0-5 with 3 K's. I think it was absolutely batshit crazy to sign him once they had signed Hanley. Hanley at 3rd, then you can have Castillo in OF instead of AAA. Still got the same bench. Since defense won't be as good, don't sign all ground ball pitchers, especially the worst one in the AL last year for $9.5 mil. Now you got one spot in rotation open and about $29 mil extra to spend for this year.

Hanley was great, and I fully supported that signing (I think I said 90% support or something). Some people didn't approve, but most of it was worry about injuries and his attitude being a problem in the clubhouse, but it looks like the attitude problems may be more of an issue with Sandoval than Hanley.

Overall, I am encouraged though. Buchholz looked excellent, and I think he's the biggest key to the team. Although it was just Philly. He looked great at times last year too, so still need to see more from him.

Mookie is awesome. Maybe you can say it was a good nonmove by the FO to not trade him. It was opportunity to screw up and they didn't, so I can see that as a positive.

Pedroia may be back to his old self. Him being good rather than mediocre in the 2 spot could be the biggest boost for the overall offense.

Almost forgot: Cole Hamels is a washed-up bum. Thank God we didn't trade for him.

Lester too! What a waste of money that would have been. (My last post wasn't in the full spirit of the thread)

Hamels and Lester are both cooked. The Red Sox FO is right - once pitchers hit 30 they might as well be put in old age homes.

We'll beat Seattle's record for most wins in a season, AND win the WS, as they failed to do.

you kidding? They lost 46 times!! A little bit of optimism man!

Um.... Read the thread title. I'm overreacting.

He was being facetious. Learn to read between the lines.

Oh wow. I didn't realize that until now. I read it so fast I didn't understand it.

Carry on, everybody.

OTOH, he's on pace to hit 324 HRs this year. I say we keep him and trade Bogaerts, who is obviously a bum, and put Mookie at SS.

Hanley in the HOF is not out of the question. So far he has a career .874 OPS with 1400 hits while playing shortstop. He doesn't have as many awards as I would have expected, but he was probably the best offensive shortstop of the last decade.

If the position change does keep him healthy, he certainly has an outside shot.

We'll have to wait to see how the others pitch, but Buchholz couldn't have gotten us off to a better start. He set a great tone.

I was not a fan of the Panda signing either, but now that he's here, I'm happy to have him on the team. He had a rough game yesterday, but he will be a good upgrade over what we got from 3B last year. I just think Headley would have been a less expensive option.

It was great to see Pedroia be able to turn on those inside fast balls. That's a good sign. As good as he was offensively yesterday, I liked his defense even better.

Of note was the Ortiz - HanRam waltz in the dugout. No surprise that Papi led and Hanley followed.
