Here is a really nice story about Daniel Bard. I never heard about the thoracic problem and operation.

Thanks to Josh Beckett, Bard may have a future pitching a baseball again.

I hope so.

Dang Cubbies are 0-6, I believe. Maddon must be running a Boy Scout camp over there.

As far as Bard goes, I'm pulling for him. Hope he makes it.

Ortiz and Sandoval homer, Red Sox top Pirates

Associated Press

BRADENTON, Fla. -- David Ortiz and Pablo Sandoval homered in the third inning off Pirates right-hander Ryan Beckman to erase a deficit and lift the Boston Red Sox over Pittsburgh 5-1 Thursday.

Pirates starter A.J. Burnett pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings but left two runners on base who scored on Ortiz's three-run drive. Burnett struck out two and walked three.

Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz survived a rocky first inning that included two singles, a hit batter, a wild pitch, a wild pickoff, and a sacrifice fly. He allowed four hits in three scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Pirates closer Mark Melancon allowed two hits and a run in an inning, giving up an RBI double to Shane Victorino that boosted Boston's lead to 5-1 in the fourth.

Sandoval, who signed a $95 million, five-year contract during the offseason, went 2 for 3.

I wouldn't be surprised if Maddon had them all wearing boy scout uniforms.

It's always great beating the Yankees, regardless of whether it's spring training or not.

I have some really dear friends who are Yankees fans, but man, they can be so obnoxious.

That's 6 in a row for the Boy Scouts.

Too bad these games don't mean anything.

LOL Maddon drives me crazy. I know that most people consider him a great manager, but I can't stand him. Maddon, Scioscia, and Showalter - the trifecta of micromanaging self-important twits.

I have never paid Maddon much mind until he bolted for the Cubs.

It was at his intro that I began to suspect substance abuse on his part. Go back and watch the tape. He was either drunk, tripping balls, or was experiencing an Insulin Reaction.

He was all but out of control.

If Cechinni hits, Shaw hits, Bradley hits, Brentz hits, Merraro hits - what do you do? No room at the inn. You can't keep them on the farm forever. They are developing good players. Not great, but possible major league contributors.

Actually it's a superfecta. You left out Girardi although he has been slightly humbled lately by the mediocrity of his team. Try listening to his post game interviews.

Haha, I'll have to watch that clip when I get a chance. I just feel like Maddon is too over the top. He tries too hard to put the spotlight on himself, IMO.

That would be a great problem to have. It would be nice if those guys could build their value. Some players will eventually be traded for a SP. The more value those guys have, the less likely other teams will insist on Betts or Swihart.

LOL Ogden. One of the reasons that I like you is because you love the Yankees as much as I do. Honestly, Girardi has never bothered me as much as the other 3 that I mentioned, but I am certainly not opposed to adding him to the list. :D

Come on Yankees - Can't believe you left Richardson, Kubek, Maris, Mantle, Tresh, Howard, Boyer, and whoever played first in 63 or 64 at home.

Pepitone with that funky stance.

Actually I don't dislike the Yankees ... only a few of the pretentious jerks that played for them since Steinbrenner took over, e.g. AFraud, Posada, Chamberlain. Believe it or not, there really wasn't much of a rivalry until Yaz arrived and the shipbuilder from Cleveland finagled his way into the Bronx.

Bummer. I'm going to pretend that you didn't write that.

Yaz's playing days, unfortunately, are mostly a little before my time.

LOL cp

This shot would have more punch if the Yankees hadn't beat us yesterday. :(

I think you're dating yourself, youngster! My memory of the Sox in the late 50s (pre-Yaz) is that this rivalry was as intense (at least for RS fans) as it ever has been since. Of course, the RS sucked, so I'm not sure whether it meant anything to NY fans.

I thought it was Peptone but for some reason I wanted to go with Skowron (Moose).

I grew up 5 miles across the Hudson pre-Impossible Dream season. From Yankee fans perspective, there was no rivalry. There may have been a Williams - DiMaggio rivalry but that was before my time so I don't know if that meant anything back then.

The Moose was traded after the 1962 season. My uncle knew him and got me an autographed picture of him which I still have someplace.

Justin was really zipping it in there today. He touched 90 at least once according to Bradford's radio commentary. By the way, he doesn't mesh well with Joe Costig if you ask me.

Moose came back to haunt the Yankees in the 1963 World Series with the Dodgers hitting a big Homer or 2.

I generally like Jerry Remy.

Yesterday he said something really stupid that I had to laugh at. Masterson, etc., were inducing ground balls. Several were the "Bounding" type up the middle.

Remy said because of the hard field surface that ball would "hit the ground and pick up speed".

Apparently he is not a scientist.

More good news from the Fort.

Kelly was pulled today with some undisclosed injury while pitching.

Who knows how serious it is. Now we get to see what kind of quality depth or team has at starting pitching.
