You're assuming he's still pitching like this at the deadline. LOL

On the other hand, if Clay helps them climb back into contention, there's no way they trade him.

The most ridiculous part about Clay's great streak is that yesterday was the first game the team actually won of those 4 great starters in a row..

It is going to be interesting if he keeps posting this by the end of the season. Wonder if they are going to offer him an extension or something.

Clay has been a pain in the ass here, but if he is looking like this in a month, that contract makes him interesting to many teams. With the Cubs in the hunt, and Theo in the hotseat, maybe there is something there.

Theo has a history of bringing in familiar faces.

Good Buchholz

Porcello

ERod

Miley

Wright

Isn't a horrible rotation. Now if Owens could just get some control...

Johnson gets a shot here too. Ahead of both Wright and Owens and possibly even Miley. Give him a go.

I can't believe I'm saying this but Wright has been fine. Keep him in the rotation.

Because selling off their pitching staff last year worked out so well?

It did. They got ERod for Andrew Miller.

I'm beginning to think that our offense needs more infusion now than our pitching staff does.......and who could have said something like that before the season.

I'll hold off on calling that one until after tonight. If Johnson is healthy, I would still try to work him in. Miley or Wright - You aren't giving up anything there and Johnson deserves a shot. Either that or you trade him.

I don't know if the infusion is necessary. But the focus should be on the offense. I read a lot "our pitching, sniffle sniffle, blah blah" and it is hard to maintain patience. We knew the pitching was going to have to be upgraded. That was a known hole which was supposed to be addressed by the offense and by the defense. NEITHER of those things has happened.

Offensively - it SEEMS like the team has (either consciously or unconsciously) traded raking for preventing strikeouts - which is generally a bad idea. Defensively, the combination of slow starts by Pedroia and Sandoval as well as Hanley apparently having issues playing the easiest position on the field. (although I'd love to see the splits - since from my observation defensive metrics can get screwed up by odd shaped fields)

I was about to comment that part of the problem would seem to be that a number of hitters seem to have been obligated to get out of their elements in order to fit the Sox' offensive philosophy, including Sandoval, Betts, Castillo and possibly Swihart. The "work the count" philosophy probably needs to be loosened up a bit. Too many pitchers are getting free strikes against this team.

It's either that or that there is/could be some sort of emphasis on plate coverage at the expense of just going after your pitch when you get it. "Approach" is one of the muddiest of scouting/analytic terms I think since it's squishing together two things which are not necessarily related ... 1. taking pitches and 2. your gameplan to get a pitch you can crush and to crush it ... and yeah #2 seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle

ER and Clay may have given our staff a needed shot in the arm and I know Miley wasn't much at fault for the debacle Saturday in Texas when the roof fell in on our defense, but I'm believing that our offense may be in need of more TLC than our pitching----torpedoing that canard that 700 Hitter and I agree on everything. It is surprising as well as irritating that Cherington gave Fatso Sandoval a five year contract when his power and production had been in decline four straight years. Now it seems to have cratered completely, and when Hanley has a negative WAR even with his dozen homers it is cause for just a little concern, don't you think. Perhaps if Papi and Nap could just catch on fire a lot of this offensive woe could cease, but until that happens we are going to struggle.

I am really trying to be patient and tolerant with respect to Sandoval but he has tested me sorely. Infield in - he's on third - he is going on contact which I can live with. The little kiss he gave the catcher I found tough to take. I would never confuse him for two Pete Roses but either stand up and be tagged out or get after it. My analytic metric data summation on his toughness factor is about a 1 right now. A little toughness excuses a lot.

You can blame rule R 7.13 for that.

I thought so. He just confused me when gave the catcher that little kiss. He was just saying hello.

Good post. Being a disciplined and patient hitter does not always mean taking pitches and working the count.

I have not had the opportunity to watch the last two games. Seems like the pitching has settled down for once and for all. I won't call it day just yet but my hopes have raised a bit not only at the pitching but the whole team.

For the past 30 days, the team ERA is 3.73, good for 11th in MLB.

For the past 14 days, the team ERA is 3.43, also 11th.

And for the past 7 days, the team ERA is 2.15, 3rd in MLB.

Who'da thunk it?

The offense also seems to be waking up a bit, though they should still be scoring more runs than they have been.

Indeed. The rotation really hasn't been the problem at all recently. It's that offense. It still baffles me how they can perform against guys like Sonny Gray, King Felix, and C.J. Wilson, but can't put anything together against a bunch of no names.
