There is hope. There is a lot of frustration, but there is hope. The people without hope stop watching. Oddly, the optimists often lose hope first.

I don't think the optimists lose hope first. I think they get tired of listening to people who are constantly bringing them down with unending negativity and the "I told you so" attitude.

It's not all about you, Kimmi.

That is not Fangraphs definition of a #1 or #2 pitcher. That is their breakdown of what a very good player, solid player, etc. is. That does not necessarily equate to rankings of pitchers as #1, #2, etc.

Quoting FG, League-average WAR rates vary. An average full-time position player is worth about 2 WAR, while average bench players contribute much less (typically between 0 and 1 WAR). Average starting pitchers also are worth around 2 WAR, while relief pitchers are considered superb if they crack +1 WAR.

For position players and starting pitchers, here is a good rule-of-thumb chart:

Scrub 0-1 WAR

Role Player 1-2 WAR

Solid Starter 2-3 WAR

Good Player 3-4 WAR

All-Star 4-5 WAR

Superstar 5-6 WAR

MVP 6+ WAR

In my book players just above average are not No. 2s by any means. In other words, players around 2.5 WAR are closer to avg pitchers (2 WAR), than very good pitchers 4+ WAR (No 1.).

Anyways, if you think that Porcello is already a No. 2, it's ok, but IMO your standards are a bit low.

I guess you haven't been around for long then, because I hate to break it to you, but this is how us generational Boston Red Sox fans have always been.

I don't think pointing out the obvious is negativity. Are we supposed to just sit here singing kumbaya? They pitching sucks and we knew this going in. Being upset and grumpy is the natural reaction. I'm going to go kick your dog then complain that your being negative when you flip out on me...

This. Thank you!

They should stick around for the "I told you so's." Leaving to avoid that is being a punk. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt assuming that they leave because they lose hope. LOL!!

The firing of Nieves troubles me. Not a class move. Nothing came from a player to make me think that he had been tuned out. They appear to like and respect him. Bucholtz is smarter than I thought. He knows that it is impossible but the pitchers are the ones who should have been fired. Not realistic but certainly makes sense. I don't think that saying they are better than they seem to be right now and as a result will play better is really going out to far on a limb. It can't get a lot worse. TW 101 is absolutely right - it is a generational thing with us. Based upon all of the early predictions, what is there to feel optimistic about? We'll hang with them because we are fans. I could not care less about whether someone is optimistic or pessimistic - I like realistic. I think that the franchise in general is facing some major challenges going forward.

I think that there is tons of hope for this team and the season.

There are some very serious problems with this team. Real fans always have hope that the team will get fixed and play better. There is room for improvement just about everywhere.

I take no satisfaction in watching the Sox cough it up every night.

Good post. So can we refer to ourselves as "Generational Fans"?

I kind of like that moniker.

LOL

From the guy that can't handle having his opinions questioned.

We should be easier on the guy who is being forced into retirement though. It must be hard to wake up one day and realize you're a dinosaur.

Such a dick. Also, retirement can't come fast enough for me. Unfortunately, my boss still needs me.

You're a whiner, plain and simple. You only show up to whine when the team's sucking.

If the last decade+ of Red Sox baseball is not going to get you to enjoy baseball a bit more - as Satchmo said, if they don't know you can't teach em

It's baseball. It's always fun, no matter what decade and even if your team is in last place. There 's no need to pretend your team is good when they aren't good. They are still your team and baseball is still fun.

Retirement is great. Stay active and stay healthy. If I wasn't retired though I certainly wouldn't have time to post here. Too busy working, working out , and helping with the kids.

Aw, you are such an innocent victim. Lol! I' ll stay an employed dinosaur while you get fired time and again for being a misanthrope.

You are such a dick that insulting me is not enough. Talk about unprovoked.

Edit: And those who don't care about what I have to say would rather potshot me like cowards rather than ignore me.

Naaah, someone who disagrees with you is automatically a whinner.
