However I don't quite understand some ideas put forth.

 

Like how do the Sox win 86 game when scoring only 54 more runs than they allow?

 

And who the hell believes that the Sox infield defense is so good? It may be better than last year but until X ups his defensive game the Sox defense up the middle appears suspect.

I will leave you folks with a little parting thought. Really not a fan of XB's defensive ability at all last year. I do think that he will hit. He has my respect by how hard he has worked this winter. It sounds like he knew exactly what he needed to work on and has addressed the issues. Quicker feet, better lateral movement. If he wants it as badly as it sounds like he does, I'm willing to believe in him. He is big, young and athletic. If he has done and continues to do the work it takes, he very well might become a special player.

I think that the footwork has really hampered his throws to first, although he does have a strong arm.

 

It's easy to assume that with his size that he will not make a big jump in range. But if you figure in his lack of experience in reading batted balls, it can become clear that his range will improve.

 

I say these things without looking at defensive charts or stats. So go ahead and blast me!!!

You won't get blasted by me. I think that it is sad that anybody gets blasted for stating their opinion anyway. He has had a Pedroia like winter. I think that it very well may pay off for him. Sounds like he has really worked on his overall quickness with a concentration on his footwork. He is young and for him to be willing to put in the hard work I think says a lot about him and his potential. He just needed a little more range and he might have found it. I agree with you that last year he looked slow footed and that did put him in positions where bad throws had to come from. I am really curious to see how he looks this spring.

Imo, if the rotation was Lester/Porcello/Miley/Masterson/Buchholz, people would still be bitching nonstop.

 

But probably bitching a hell of a lot less. Already we're seeing the revisionists coming out and saying how it was ok to let Lester leave, that we can get along without him, that our rotation is strong enough, and that the front office knew what they were doing......and that's fine it that's your opinion. It doesn't happen to be mine. I think letting Lester leave was a potential debacle that we could feel for the next three or four season since we have no one close in our rotation who matches him.. None have performed in big game and big series and big playoff situations the way Jon has. We might get along without him but we won't be better than if we had him. Our rotation might be strong enough if the AL East is weak this year and we can sneak in and win the division, but it not nearly of the caliber to take the team to a WS Title and probably not get us to the WS unless all the stars are aligned just right. I also do not feel the front office knew what they were doing with Lester at all. Anyone who thinks that paltry 4 year 70 million contract extension offer was a fair one is nuts in my opinion. It was an insulting offer, and Lucchino made it. Was he acting on his own meddling again or was he acting in concert with Henry. Then Henry going to visit Jon to try and talk him into coming back just before he signed with the Cubs. Did anyone really believe he was going to come back or maybe like some of us, we understood that he was pissed off at the FO and wanted out.

 

Two people brought up a salient point. Maybe, just maybe, the team never really wanted to sign him long term, but I have news for Henry and Co. Don't expect another miracle like 2013. The team is going to have to be balls out and tough as nails to win anything this year, and, sorry to say, Masterson, Miley and Buchholz don't inspire all that much confidence in me. But let's see.

I'm not sure how to interpret what you have said here. I normally make allowances for your less than perfect mastery of the English language ( no insult intended here, Ortiz ). But this sentance make no sense. It does seem that you are insulting those that oppose your view, however.

 

Lester may be done and gone, but that still doesn't alleviate our need for a top quality No. 1 type pitcher which right now do not anything resembling such an animal. There are some angry people from both camps already lighting up the board but I can almost guarantee things will get pretty nasty around here if we resemble the 2014 team this season. Personally, I think the idea of not pursuing a No. 1 type pitcher is a recipe for a potential disaster.
