He had an absolutely terrible 2014, but so did Masterson. He's a groundball pitcher, usually gets you innings, and probably won't cost any talent, just money. He's not a top of the rotation guy, but he might be cheaper than some of the other backend options.

Not even comparable. Not only does he pitch in the NL West of all places, Cahill's skills have been deteriorating for years, (especially command and control). He's also had some underlying command and velocity problems that usually creep up just before a pitcher is required to have a big, career-altering surgery.

What the heck is this team doing when it comes to the pitching? They lose out on samardzija.Lester might not be back.I heard they offered masterson?Really?Ughh

Are you serious with this? It's December. And Samrdzija would have been a terrible fit.

How is samardzija a terrible fit?The guy can pitch. He is capable of being a solid 2 starter.

He's a good pitcher, but not only is he a year away from FA, he would have also cost prospects and he's necessarily a #2 pitcher in the AL. They should get a legitimate frontline starter and a borderline #1, not a probable #3 with a chance to be a #2 who's also going to cost prospects.

it's still early, but this team has struggled a lot assembling solid pitching staffs in the recent years. Thanks God, out there are plenty of options... hopefully they get it done this year.

I like Shields for four years. The Sox get Shields, Masterson and a Porcello type and they're in business.

Sounds good to me.

Pass the chocolate chip cookies, please.

Yes Farrell is good about saying the right things. Something i like about him. He will be a good FO type when he is done in the dugout.

He was a front office type ( Cleveland ) before he became a manager at the big league level.

He has cred and presence with the media. He's articulate and judicious.

Cahill is terrible.

Clearly a definitive answer!!!!

Seriously, when you come back with answer like that I immediately stamp that player as not worth having.

Thanks.

And he has no problem lying with a straight face (Cespedes). :D

Yep. But that is the game those types of guys are required to play.

That 2013 staff sure did suck.

Liriano still strikes out better than a batter per inning. That indicates to me that he still has good stuff. He could be a good gamble as a reclamation project. Better than Masterson, anyway, whom they purportedly gave an offer to. It all depends on what kind of deal Liriano signs for.

I agree with most of what example1 wrote above. These numbers and years floating around are insane. Sox shouldn't hamstring their future on one guy. s***, they should have internalized that lesson with Agon and Crawford. Better to get some decent number 3's for the rotation - maybe a number two - and keep building the farm, where the real heart of the organization lies. Sox should be competitive even without a bonafide ace. You never know who'll step it up.

Our farm system recently has been an overrated and bloated pack of disappointments. We haven't had one prospect come to the Red Sox in years and produce for us, Bogaerts, Middlebrooks and Bradley being the latest in a series of underachievers. As for Liriano, I say what mvp said....HE STINKS. And thank God we won't make the mistake with that guy in our rotation. The Pirates save us that embarrassment. And we'll never win the prize with a bunch of threes. Remember 2004, 2007, 2013? We sure as hell didn't win with a bunch of threes those years, did we?

They don't need reclamation projects or gambles (isn't that what Buchholz is anyway). They need 2 front end guys.

Could it be our new prune face might actually be the original one and just infiltrated this board to try and convince us the low risk high reward cheap way in the way to win....NOTHING!!!!!

Masterson can team-up with Buchholz at the top of the rotation as injured underperforming disappointments.

Well Ted, it is getting to be that time that the bootlickers and ball washers get behind the front office and praise them for their amazing aplomb in getting us these mediocrities, but most of us here know that a Masterson is hardly better than the worthless Buchholz or the overrated Webster. Then, again, to some the front office can do no wrong. Of course, to some of us, we wonder when they are going to do something right......like getting Lester and if not him then Hamels and a good No. 2 man like Shields. That's the way you win something, not with people like Masterson or Santana. Thank God Liriano and Hummel were swept up already or we'd have more to worry about.

Am I the only guy that would want Shields?

No mvp!!!!! Your friend here and Bellhorn are in on this. But, speaking only for myself, I am NOT on with Masterson unless he is a No. 5 or a 6.

It sounds like Lester is bouncing around on options, and the Red Sox and Cubs are his top choices again. It sounds like he's happy with any of the offers, and just wants to go somewhere that makes sense to him.

Sending John Henry was a nice touch, but maybe sending Ortiz, Pedroia, Farrell and people he actually likes might be better. Hell, send Pedro, Varitek, whatever it takes.

If it comes down to the red sox and cubs, I think the sox have the edge. Lester has a history with Farrell and the players. Chicago is a few years from contending and why would Jon want to waste his prime years on a rebuilding team when the sox are built to win now.

Not sure what "few years" mean to you, 2?, 3?... I think they need to show something substantial in 2015 like making the POs or something otherwise probably Theo will be in trouble.

Either way, hopefully Theo doesn't eat Ben's lunch.

I think you are squirming on this signing more than anyone Pal---and I hope for your sake....and mine, that we can sign Jon. Not to throw cold water on things but you've heard me say I don't think he's coming back to Boston but there seems to have been some movement in our direction so we may be getting an 11th hour reprieve on this thing. Just for the record, I predicted on the Bosox Board site that Jon would be signed by the San Francisco Giants but that seems to have been now blown out of the water so I know about as much as you do as to where Jon will eventually wind up......actually probably a lot less.

Fred, you should try to be a little less negative. Cheer up bud! I'm sure I'm not the only one on this board tired of your bitching and moaning.

MJ, check with me in about a week or two. I might just surprise you.
