Also, i'd rather overpay Lester than get into a bidding war with the Yankees who, if reports are to be believed, lust after Scherzer. Teixeira and Damon #neverforget

Masterson is a good starter who dealt with injuries and bad luck last year. As far as mid-rotation starters go, he's about as sure a thing as you can get. Certainly more consistent and effective than Liriano et al, inability to consistently get lefties out notwithstanding.

If they get him, they better hope last year was an abberation. Was he dealing with injuries? What $ is he looking for?

Bad knee and ankle injuries, control went to hell. He was supposedly looking for a 1-year, $12 million offer to recoup value. We'll see.

Personally i like him better than Liriano, who is consistently inconsistent, and fails to provide innings.

There are also a lot of rumors circling that the Yankees have emerged as one of the teams in on Lester.

....and most of them have been dispelled. But if it is true, and the Yanks get Lester, then the Sox should enter the Scherzer sweepstakes.

Masterson can team-up with Buchholz at the top of the rotation as injured underperforming disappointments.

Wha?

Over the previous 3 years, Masterson averaged 32 starts, 205 IP, and a 3.85 ERA. These things take three seconds to look up.

I would like to see Lester back but still think we deal from a good position. The money and the years have gone past being a little foolish. Ultimately they will figure it out. Masterson would be just a small piece of the bigger puzzle.

Am I the only guy that would want Shields?

Definitely not. But he's going to be crazy overpaid too. The losers on Lester will be immediately looking his way.

@nickcafardo: Red Sox offer to Justin Masterson would be for a starter job not relief. The Red Sox have offered at least two years.

All MLB guys are overpaid at this point. I'd rather throw money at a problem than move prospects for Hamels.

I like Shields for four years. The Sox get Shields, Masterson and a Porcello type and they're in business.

I'd be ok with that. Porcello could wind up being a #2.

Why are they making an offer to Masterson...
to create depth so guys like webster rdlr workman and ranaudo can be traded.

Get Scherzer-- better stuff and less innings on his arm.

Omg no. That guys arm is gonna fall apart eventually. Also name the last big money Boras deal that worked out.

If the Sox can get Shields around 4/80, that might be worth it. I'd be afraid of him asking for 5/120 or something that doesn't make sense for a 33 year old.

4/80 ain't happening. I expect he'll get at least 110 million.

I looked at the list, and they're more common than I could remember. Adrian Beltre, Matt Holliday, Jayson Werth, Jared Weaver are all looking pretty good right now.

Choice quote from Buster Olney

Bidding for Jon Lester has reached level where successful billionaire owners not used to losing are competing against each other. Nice spot.

My Nats buddies don't see Werth as a win. And Weavers deal looks good because he took a home town discount against Boras's advisement. Anyways for every "good" Boras deal there are just as many albatross's or soon to be albatross's. Idk i just really im my very own opinion don't see Scherzer aging well amd see no point in giving him more then Lester.

Saw on Twitter Farrell thinks Betts is strongest candidate to lead off next year. Seems like he isn't going anywhere

Didn't Farrell also say something about where Cespedes will be playing for us next year though?

I will be shocked and enraged if they trade Betts. I don't think they'll do it, no way.

The alternative was to outright admit they were going to dump Cespedes (which we all know is what's actually going to happen). THAT, was the wrong thing to say IMO.
