Not sure he is the dominate type, my hope is he is a + defender and a catalyst for the offense. With his skill set and tools its not out of the question. I don't see him being a banger in the lineup. But then again haven't seen a whole lot of him.

I would imagine the Red Sox have seen more of him than the rest of us combined. I would be extremely surprised if they don't have scouts in Cuba.

So far Castillo has shown that the skills are there to be a good player with the Sox. How good of a player won't be determined until we see him every day in April, May and June. The Sox need him to be sound in the OF and have good ABs where he helps an already improved lineup. Everything you here says that he is a hard worker and a good teammate.

@Sean_McAdam: OF Rusney Castillo has inflammation in his right shoulder, but no structural damage. Will need a couple weeks of rest and rehab.

explains why I didn't see him in last nights lineup. Hope isn't one who has trouble staying on the field.

He does seem to be one that gets injured a lot.

It's pretty much the second week of his first year in the Majors......maybe, just maybe give him a little more time?

edit: wrong thread.

A thumb, an oblique, now a shoulder. He obviously plays hard but so do lots of others. He is very talented and maybe has just been hit with a run of bad luck. Whatever, it does make the stockpiled depth in position players look good. I'm still watching JBJ closely. He is off to a good start. Not ready to give up on or get rid of him too quickly.

I'm with you on this. Bradley is way too talented defensively to be discarded. His bat can be corrected.

Well, maybe not according to our resident experts.

I feel a need to consistently say that I don't have data to back it up on this site but it seems to me that if a player is going to make it at the mlb level, they need to be very good at the AAA level. He is off to another great start with the P-Sox. I'm not ready to see him traded for anyone. I would love to see him hitting and fielding in a Red Sox uniform beside Mookie someday. He may get another chance!

Unfortunately, AAA success doesn't always translate to the bigs.

JBJ has no trouble hitting in Pawtucket.

That said, I hope he figures it out with the bat at the MLB level. He's way too much fun to watch in the field to trade.

I agree with you that it doesn't always translate into success at the big level level but I would think it did normally although those are really just my thoughts. That's what makes Bradley really interesting. He hits so well at that level and so poorly at the mlb level. Doesn't seem normal what ever normal is. It makes me stutter just a little when I think of Swihart because for all it's worth Bradley came with the same can't miss pedigree. Bradley is a proven talent with that glove and arm like you said. Who knows - if he comes along he could still be very special. As I recall (I don't recall as good as I used to) Bradley ripped through Portland and Pawtucket in much the same way as Mookie Betts.

Bradley completely lost his swing last year. He wasn't even hitting anything in AAA last year either.

Problem is where do you put him. 2 of our 3 outfield positions are set -- Betts is our CF going forward and Hanley is our LF. Victorino's earned the right to fail in RF so they're going to give him at least a couple months to come around. If the only space we have for JBJ is from off the bench he's better off in AAA for now.

the truth for sure. I am guilty of looking ahead and I have to admit that Castillo's injury history has me a little concerned. Victorino is probably around for the season. Maybe next season maybe mid-year, if Bradley hits, I could see a fairly solid outfield with Betts and Bradley in the same lineup. I don't think it would make much difference which one of those played center. I actually like that big arm that Bradley has in right. Don't interpret this as me giving up on Castillo - not by a long shot - he has too much talent to ever give up on him. A Jackie Bradley that hits, I just really like.

Actually I am not sure - if Craig gets dealt for instance ... if THAT is the spot that opens up, Bradley actually makes more sense than Castillo - since he can be a defensive replacement. Castillo could still get reps that he needs.

Vis a vis the injury I am less worried - team is being very cautious and no reason for him to try to tough out AAA games. I suspect if he were in Boston and it was September and the Sox were in the hunt, Castillo would be active.

Unless the Sox have multiple injuries in the OF this year, probably AAA until 2016.

If he's hitting well and the Sox deem it necessary to deal some bodies for SP, he may get another chance in August.

JBJ wasn't nearly as well regarded as a prospect as Swihart is. Much of it is positional value. The baseline for production at catcher is way lower than the OF, so you're comparing apples to oranges here.

I get the feeling that we are going to have to trade for a starting pitcher of quality or maybe even two and with the surplus outfielders and prospects we have some of those players are going to have to be dealt. There is only room for three in the outfield as starters and maybe one for the bench. Pitching is going to make or break us this year and if those of our prospects in the minors aren't ready we have to go outside the organization to get the pitching we need----and we all know we need pitching.

This is true.

I attribute that to his struggles with Boston.

I think Vic is gone after this year, right? 3-year deal he signed in 2013, I believe. So an outfield of Hanley - Mookie - JBJ would not be too bad (assuming JBJ hits enough) for a few years....

I wasn't actually making an attempt to compare anybody to anybody. A general statement. They were or are both highly regarded. I hope that Swihart becomes the player that everyone hopes he becomes.

What you did in the first post was the textbook definition of a comparison. Also, you're making the assumption that JBJ won't become the player everyone expects him to be. It could still happen.
