I've always argued that some part of it depends on a hitter's profile. Take Ortiz for example-- in his career, he's hit more to right field than left, so teams deploy a shift to take hits away from him. But if the infield needs to hold runners on bases, it limits what the team can do defensively.

Maybe its just a coincidence, but over his career....

.914 OPS bases empty

.940 OPS runners on

1.108 OPS bases loaded.

Bases loaded is a SSS though. And hitters tend to fare slightly better overall with runners on due to defensive shifts and a drop-off in stuff from pitchers pitching from the side

Also, Jesus Christ Iglesias is on fire.

Iggy rains all over Joe's interview. Strike one was the best pitch Iggy got to swing at last at bat and he let it go by...... Not this time.

If Iggy keeps hitting... the Sox need to play him over Middlebrooks.

Yes, if he's a .450 hitter, sure. If he's a .260 hitter, no way.

Iggy is a SS and should be there for his entire career.

What do you think happens with Xander?

They really don't. Because not only do you know he won't keep hitting like this, but we're all kidding ourselves if we think Iglesias is, has been or will be a better and more productive hitter than WMB.

He fills the hole at 3B, because Middlebrooks doesn't know what a strike is.

If the Yankees lose this game, they'll be tied in the standings with the fourth place Rays.

And both of them will be still be far above the jays lol.

I like this order

1. Ellsbury. 2 Pedroia. 3. Ortiz. 4. Napoli, 5. Nava.

Or let Nava hit 2nd, since Farrrel will not remove Pedroia from the 3-hole since he has hit well there.

This team cannot f***ing hit. And everyone is touting Iglesias hitting, he just has a hard on when he faces pinstripes. He's hitting .500 vs NY

How can you complain about offense? You clearly have two beast hitters in Tex and Youk...

Honestly I don't think there can be a question of what happens when WMB comes back regardless of what Iggy is doing at the time. The relevant question IMO is: Do they keep Iggy here as a utility infielder/platoon infielder or do they send him back down to play every day in Pawtucket?

The Sox could possibly find just enough playing time for him here while not playing him every day.
