Uehara qualifies as a good bullpen arm too.

Geez that's the second time I've forgotten about him. It's nothing personal against him, honest!!

Re: Melancon... Would it shock anyone if, by year's end, Melancon had better numbers (even park-adjusted) than Hanrahan?

Posted

Melancon certainly could put up better numbers, but he wouldn't have put up those numbers at Fenway.

A lot of people won't realize that, though, and Ben the Boob comments will be flying

Somebody WAKE UP that RISK AVERSE boob and tell him we demand to know all the players involved in this trade and provide an update on Napoli. I have no confidence that this FO would be able to properly set an alarm clock!

I am curious to see if the other piece from Pittsburgh is a major league piece or a prospect. If we are including a major league piece like Melancon (good riddance to that piece of garbage) maybe a major league piece will be coming back. I really like the idea of Garrett Jones coming with Hanrahan.

Have the final pieces of this trade been announced? I can't find anything on the completion of the trade.

He's keeping it tight-lipped until physicals are performed. My guess is there is someone going the other way who may have some questionable medicals.

Has to be Garrett Jones for Iggy. Salaries match. Jones is good platoon at 1B with Napoli. Can also play RF.
Jones was the only Pirate who stepped up and played well last season as the Pirates were going down the drain at the end of the season.

Do you know how the tell-tale sign of a very very good move?

Not a single person is complaining about it:lol:

I think there are a few curmudgeons just waiting for all the details to come out.

I've heard multiple reports that Iggy isn't included in deal.

Having said that, they have taken a while to release the last name in the deal, so it could be him.

I don't think it's questionable medicals that are holding this up, only because of a tweet from Heyman that says:

“@JonHeymanCBS: Word is, still some discussion about final player or 2 in hanrahan deal. Not expected to derail it, but may delay past xmas”

So it sounds like they are still negotiating the end of the deal.

Delay until past Xmas!!! Wow now all of us will have the same thing on our minds while eating Xmas dinner... "Who is involved in the deal!!!"

Please someone leak something about the swap

For Jones, I would give up more than Iggy. He hits RHP very well, and would be the perfect platoon player at 1B with Napoli, plus can play RF. Salary last yr $2.2 mil. They have to be after him.

I forgot that the Pirates acquired Gaby Sanchez from the Marlins.

I would say the Sox could include Kalish in the deal and get Jones in return. Pirates would get their OF and 1B covered w Kalish and Sands

I hope the Sox wouldn't do something as stupid as to move Kalish for Jones. His last 1647 PAs have led to a .314 OBP and a .765 OPS. Kalish has about 6 years of cost controlled-ness left and Jones has much, much less. Let's not include Kalish for Jones.

i would prefer to part with Iggy. Kalish can hit and steal bases. Iggy will probably never hit MLB pitching.

It will be renamed the Iglesias line soon enough.

I'd also prefer letting Iggy go over Kalish. While I'm not totally sold on Kalish, I would like to see what he can do a few years removed from injury. Agreed that Kalish has a shot at having some up side while Iglesias would be easier to let go of.

I figure the delay because they are hovering near the luxury cap right now--about $9 mil below according to Speier, and Hanrahan puts them close. If they are including Jones, that would mean Pitt has to take some salary back. So they are probably trying to come up with a package that keeps them under the cap and is agreeable to both teams.

Of course, they could always walk away from Napoli, which would solve the cap problem, and use Gomez at 1B as the RHd bat. If Napoli has a hip issue, his versatility might be restricted.

Iglesias is not in the deal according to the reports. I would rather give up Nava than Kalish, if it came down to an outfielder.

There's speculation that Garrett Jones is in the deal. I guess they're getting close to the luxury cap, so would the plan be to ditch CA/1B Napoli and sign 1B/OF Jones? Or add Jones into the mix without ditching Napoli if we can get the right language into his contract, and figure out some other way to get under the threshold? Unless they're planning on having Nap catch a lot, I don't see how there's enough room for both at 1B. What about a Nap vs. Jones comparison?

Jones would play more OF than 1B I would guess. And then fill in at 1B when Napoli is catching/needs a day off.

He would be a great LH power bat that would slide very nicely into the 7 slot ahead of Lavarnway and Drew.

Ells - Vic - Pedey - Ortiz - Napoli - WMB - Jones/Gomes - Lav/Ross - Drew would make a very strong lineup.

Nava has zero trade value.

He has 'some' value but it's pretty small. I could see another team asking for him as a throw-in. I mean, two teams actually agreed to take Brent Lillibridge in trades last year.

Lillibridge was thrown in because he was going to get cut when they added Youkilis. We took him to make it look like we got a return. He had no value. Neither does Nava.

I am aware of that. Just saying I would rather give up Nava than Kalish, anyone would. Maybe Melancon, Nava, Sands, and Pimentel for Jones and Hanrahan? That is a steal for us. They get Melancon who has had success in the NL and has some upside. They get Sands who has some potential and is not a FA until 2019. Pimentel used to be a top prospect in Boston, but has taken a step back. Nava is a throw in just so Pittsburgh has another OF in the deal. Not a fair trade, but I would take it anyday. Jones is not a FA until 2016.
