Aw c'mon, Sport, Cherington has signed 6 free agents in a relatively short period and is now in discussions on Hanrahan. You may not like the moves but I think he's at least putting to rest the inertia stuff.

Ben is closing in on a deal for Hanrahan. Cmon, Ben.

And for SFF and others who thought Iglesias could get it done, let's see what they actually give up

“@JimBowdenESPNxm: What would be fair return for Hanrahan? I think Iglesias straight up would make sense....possibly Bryce Brentz & Henry Owens?”

Count Bowden in on that thought.

And Heyman has already reported that Iggy is not in the deal.

Kalish + Cecchini perhaps? Or Morales + Alex Wilson?

Yikes, those are cringeworthy. We're talking about one year of a reliever with a 3.74 career ERA, with big walk numbers who will make 7 million in 2013.

We're probably looking at guys like Britton/Stolmy in any reasonable deal.

I think you may be overvaluing our guys and undervaluing Hanrahan.

I think whoever gets dealt will be on the 40 man roster. The roster is full with Uehara, Napoli, and Drew already waiting to be added. Plus Hanrahan.

The problem is that he's extremely expensive at an estimated 7 mill, a free agent next year, and won't be returning draft picks. And he's a reliever with a 6 BB/9 last year. If they give up anything significant for him, it'll be a mistake.

You never know when guys change leagues. It becomes a variable. Dickey, for example, has pitched well only with the Mets the last 3 years. He was sub-par before that for 7 years in the AL.

Player A: 51.1 IP, 9BB, 1.58 ERA, .99 WHIP, AL East pitcher.

Player B: 59.2 IP, 36 BB, 2.72 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, NL Central pitcher.

Atchison and Hanrahan.

Eh results???

He's got a 2.24 ERA over 133 games over the past 2 seasons. That's durable and extremely effective.

Heyman reporting that one of the names could be Sands.

I wonder if they would be interested in Melancon, who had terrific success in Houston (ie in the NL) and isn't a FA until 2017?

Jerry Sands + Mark Melancon?

We'll find out soon enough, although I think everyone on here is expecting an overpay. Not sure why the sox are willing to repeat the same mistake twice. Instead of health being a question, it's control. You really want to try to close out a game vs the Yankees knowing he's gonna walk a few?

Last year was phenominal, but this year scares me.

“@JimBowdenESPNxm: Pirates source confirms Joel Hanrahan will be dealt to Red Sox and in fact Jerry Sands is part of the deal as speculated by @JonHeymanCBS”

Looks like he's coming to Boston.

If Sands is the centerpiece, it's a steal for the Sox.

Well see if his control issues persist or if they were an aberration. Either way, certainly a gamble worth taking if you just have to give up a fringe guy.

Hanrahans upside is tremendously greater than Sands.

Looking at his game logs, he walked 2 guys in 8 of his 63 appearances, and 3 guys in 1 of his 63 appearances.

So, in 54 of his 63 appearances, he walked 1 or 0 batters.

He threw 59.2 IP and walked a total of 36 batters. The funny thing with relievers is that they throw so few innings that sometimes peripherals don't have time to normalize.

For example if he had missed/bad calls on even 5 of those walks, his BB/9 drops by 0.7 to 4.7/9.

I'm not justifying it at all, because it was horrid. I'm just saying that the amount of games that are actually impacted by his walks were not nearly as bad as his BB/9 would make you think.

Posted

And if Salty was catching for him, do you think those walk numbers are going to get better?

I'm very happy with this deal if Sands is the centerpiece. But I was concerned with talks of guys like Cecchini, Kalish or other quality pieces involved.

Posted
If it's just Sands I suppose it isn't really a huge deal. Hanrahan definitely has good stuff....the walk rates last year are concerning though. I'm also going to second the thought that if Salty's catching him it isn't going to help anything. Hopefully it's just an easy to fix problem and it gets turned around. If this guy pitches as good as he can, this bullpen is going to be a bit outrageous.

Has to be good trade, getting a top pitcher like Hanrahan for a AAA guy with power. You read Speier's story about Sands, and you wonder why they got Gomes. This guy could be much better than Gomes if he gets his swing down. But they got their best bullpen pitcher in Hanrahan, so it's a good deal.

Pimentel is an expendable pitcher. The Pirates have a good organization, and maybe they can do something with him. They like him.

Posted

Hard to, yes. Sands is hardly proven, and Pimentel lost some value last year.

Another solid little move by Cherington. He's slowly building a pretty interesting team. I donno if they'll win anything, but I like what he's trying to do.

I'd say it's increasingly likely that Morales is "in the mix" for one of the rotation spots given how much we're loading up the pen. As a power lefty, I can't hate that move either. He's got every chance in my mind to be a very good SP. That and the Dempster acquisition pretty much closes the rotation out with 6 options that aren't going anywhere before Spring (Lester, Buchholz, Doubront, Dempster, Lackey, Morales, with RdlR and Webster in the mix as replacements) so I don't see another big arm coming to Boston -- but I'm also not sure we really need one

Atchison and Hanrahan.

And this illustrates why states should be used as Vin Scully says. He says stats should be used the way a drunk uses a lamp post-- for support not illumination. Hanrahan is clearly the superior talent.

I don't know what those stats mean about Atchison. I do know what they mean about Hanrahan.

Red Sox Acquire Joel Hanrahan From Pirates

By Zach Links [December 22 at 4:03pm CST]

4:03pm: As it stands, the deal will be a six-player swap with four players going to Pittsburgh and two headed to Boston, according to Heyman (via Twitter).

3:34pm: The Red Sox and Pirates have agreed to a deal that will send Joel Hanrahan to Boston, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN.com (on Twitter).* Jerry Sands and Stolmy Pimentel will go to Pittsburgh in the swap and there will be more players involved in the deal.* There will be two more players headed to the Bucs in the deal, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (on Twitter).

Hanrahan, 31, pitched to a 2.72 ERA with 10.1 K/9 and 5.4 BB/9 in 59 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh last season. He earned $4.1MM and projects to earn $6.9MM through arbitration next year. Hanrahan is scheduled to become a free agent after 2013.*

Despite having a reputation as a strong closer, some rival evaluators have been concerned about his recent proclivity for walks.* Hanrahan's walk rate climbed from 2.1 BB/9 in 2011 to 5.4 BB/9 in 2012.

Sands came to the Red Sox in their blockbuster trade with the Dodgers as one of the players to be named later.* The 25-year-old outfielder/first baseman owns a Triple-A batting line of .288/.362/.552 with 55 home runs in 940 plate appearances across the past two years.* Sands also has 70 big league games to his credit, most of which came in 2011.

Pimentel, 22, was rated as the No. 6 prospect in the Red Sox's organization in 2010 by Baseball America but was bumped down to No. 23 the following year.* The 6'3" right-hander boasts a strong changeup but has failed to impress at the Double-A level.* In 37 starts for Double-A Portland, the youngster has posted a 5.96 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.* Alex Speier of WEEI.com notes that Pimentel was targeted by the Pirates in 2008.* The Bucs had hoped to acquire him as part of the potential three-way deal with the Dodgers and Red Sox that resulted in Manny Ramirez going to LA and Jason Bay coming to Pittsburgh, but the Sox refused to include him.

Andrew Bailey, Boston's incumbent closer, pitched to a 7.04 ERA in 15 1/3 innings in 2012 while missing most of the year with injuries. WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports they have not discussed free agent Rafael Soriano despite having a protected first round pick. The Dodgers were among the teams with interest in Hanrahan in recent weeks.

ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes first reported that the two sides were nearing an agreement.

A 4 for 2 deal? Bigger than I would have expected.

Salty, Iglesias, Sands, Stolmy, for Hanrahan and garrett Jones would make me a happy camper, and there would be a lot there to sell to Pirates fans too.

Yes, the Garrett Jones part would make a lot of sense. By trading Sands we would need to acquire a 1B/OF type. Jones would fill that role perfectly.

Don't see why the extra pieces would be anything major. How do the names of Sands/Pimentel leak and not something bigger if they were also part of the deal?
