If it weren't for advanced statistics, a guy coming off a season with an ERA in low 1.00s would be getting a closer/setup job this year. I just figured that those factors would push him to a middle rotation role.

Remember back in 2010, when the Red Sox had two elite relievers, Scott Atchison, and a pile of garbage behind? That trade deadline, I looked over the list of relievers with ERAs between 3.00 and 4.00, and had trouble finding any options that wouldn't cost insane money or prospects.

As a gritty relief option who threw multiple innings 12 times last year, I believed he deserved better.

They didn't. And here's the problem: It's not only the Red Sox who didn't think he was an option to receive an ML contract. Think about the number of teams with a need for cheap relief help, and yet only the Mets had enough interest to take a flyer. There's something there we're not seeing.

No, I know it will not, because I am clearly not cut out for the intelligible, substantive debate that exists here. I feel the need to point out the sarcasm in that last statement due to the low-level thinking that is commonly expressed on these pages. This is a text versions of monkeys hurling their own feces at each other. No it will not miss me, nor will I it. Keep fighting the good fight.

And good luck finding the forum of your dreams.

You'll find that if you make intelligent posts, and respect others here, you will receive respect in turn. I have been very active in the forums for a few years, and while there are a handful of disagreements, I very much enjoy the community here. When the mods get back from offseason-vacation some of these disagreements will settle down.
Good advice.

If the Red Sox talked about Lars as a legitimate prospect at the time, it was in a way to paint a nice picture of him before trying to trade him. He had an awful year in 2009 that showed his prospect stock completely plummet. It also started to become apparent that his raw power wasn't translating into power numbers at the plate.

This was all common knowledge at the time, and if you look back at the discussions at Talksox from 2009-2010, they would reflect that.

Right again Palodios!!!! It was in 2009 that the wheels starting falling off of Lar's career, but I still remember the front office saying this was nothing more than a hiccup and looked for better things from him the next season. I think down at Double AA he got off to decent start in 2010 and then promoted to Pawtucket fell apart. If they knew that he wasn't what he was cracked up be by then I'm sure their rosy picture they might have been painting would have gone over like a lead balloon with other teams because they had scouts around and they could see what the Red Sox took so long to see for themselves.

Of course, this does nothing to address our pitching woes but if I can say this about Atchison, let me tell you that the guy was a real trooper for us. There were many instances when he had to suddenly become a long man when one our pitchers came up lame. I remember one such game in Boston where Nava hit that grand slam off of Blanton, and the other where I was present in San Francisco when Buchholz came up lame because he had forgotten how to slide. Atchison pitched well that day and won for us. I just think he deserved better than he got from us.

That's because you're usually either wrong, or spouting insults to other posters/players/front office or annoying hyperbole. This is an example of you being plain wrong and refusing to admit it. The initial point you made was that they traded Rizzo instead of Anderson because they valued Anderson more, and this is wrong, as pretty much everyone has told you. At the time of the trade (which is the only time relevant to this discussion) Rizzo was a top-100 prospect, and Anderson had pretty much washed out.

And no, i won't put you on ignore. I will keep calling you out on your ******** every chance i get.

What a first class turd you are. Do you take stupid pills or were you just born that way. Did your poor mom have any children that lived? What the hell inspired you to say that I said they traded Rizzo instead of Anderson "because they valued Anderson more"? What a pile of garbage!!!! Rizzo was traded because new SD GM Jed Hoyer wanted him and not Anderson. The Red Sox had nothing to say about it if they wanted Gonzales. You got that lame brain?

As far as insulting o ther posters I only insult you because you attack me first. I had some problems with one other person but we no longer communicate so that problem is solved. And as far as me insulting some player or the front office personnel what damn business is it of yours? You aren't suffering from it unless you are living up to your seedy reputation of a brown nose kiss butt to just about anything the front office say or does.

If you also checked some facts you would know that in 2008 Anderson was listed as our No. 1 prospect, so I was right on that. I never said he was that by late 2010. Also keep this in mind....I offered you the chance to put me on ignore so we wouldn't have to keep having this verbal combat. You refused and have kept up the diatribes and I will give it to you back tit for tat. I think you are a first class brown nose crumb and it would be good for both of us not to communicate any more, but if you insist on keeping this thing going I will be more than willing to take you on. You see I love debating with a moron.

Fred, you just don't know what you're talking about and refuse to admit it. You've already been proven wrong on the subject multiple times. If someone's a turd here, that's you. Anyways, i won't argue with you anymore. If you can't admit it, that's fine, but stop spreading around false information.

That's finer USER!!!! You won't argue with me anymore and I wont argue with you. We will have peace on the board. I will not answer to any of your posts---and I expect you not to answer to any of mine. Should work out.

@PeteAbe: Be shocked if Jason Varitek wanted a full-time coaching job. Chad Epperson could replace the mysteriously vanished Gary Tuck

Haha! You are right, User, but he is entertaining. He reminds me of my uncle who is a passionate Red Sox fan but very extreme in his beliefs. I never argue with him because he does not really know what he is talking about. He has great passion but is oblivious to reality. Basically, he is f o s, but I let him vent.

If we all agreed all the time, this forum would be boring. Fred is extreme and passionate. That is why we want him around.

Well it's always nice to feel wanted Spitball, but I want to be more than just entertaining. On this last set-to, my statement about Lars Anderson was taken totally out of context. My take was that he was ONCE considered our No. 1 prospect, not that he was when we traded Rizzo instead of him. We all know that by the end of 2010 he was pretty much a sunk cost. Anyway, that much is over. Hell, maybe down the road User and I can actually become friendly again.

I also can't wait for the Super Bowl....both for the game and the fact that it finally ends football. I getting itchy for the real sport.

Well I am maybe more critical of Salty than anybody here or at least as critical as anybody here. However I commented several times last year that the one place that Salty seemed to make some headway was his throwing. So I would have to say that Tuck had a positive impact there.

Was Salty a great thrower last year???? No he wasn't but he at least he went from a totally awful thrower to somebody that occasionally made a pretty decent throw down to second. It was the one thing that Salty started doing that year that actually looked like it had some rhythm back there. All to often just about everything Salty does looks like the game is just going to fast for him. He boots a ball that bounces off his shins and he turning here, turning there, turning 360's and the ball is right at his feet.

So I for one would not say Tuck had no impact.

I've heard this, but who exactly did he help recently?

Gary Tuck has long been considered one of the best at developing catching fundamentals.

In Jorge Posada's retirement speech, he made a point of thanking Gary Tuck for developing his catching skills. When Jason Varitek gave his retirement speech he said, "If Webster needs a definition of coach, it has to be Gary Tuck," he said. "He has meant more to me at an age I was told my skills were depleted. But he pushed me, got me better, stood by my side, believed in me when no one else did. I forever will have a friend in Coach Tuck."

Saltalmacchia may not be a good catcher, but that can't be blamed on Tuck.

Kalish out for six months. What a waste of talent.

I was hoping the kid could finally get his chance to show what hes got. But ur right definitely a waste of talent. And i dont think they will add another platoon bat they will just use nova and sweeny and i hate to bet anything on either one of them as far as contributing anything as far as power #s to platoon with gomes.

Garret Jones would have been the ticket but i dont see that happening.

Where did you see the report on Kalish's length of DL i havent seen the 6 months stint?

And this is why I don't trust anything coming out of Yawkey way about Ortiz. First Kalish was going to miss ST...now he is out for 6 months....before long he will be gone again for the year.

This has become all to familiar as far as the Sox and announcements regarding injuries is concerned...especially when there are tickets to be sold!

Farrell says Ortiz is doing well and should be ready. But who knows...they're using him in their ticket ads so you couldn't put it past them to fudge the facts a bit.

They had better get a special shoe for him to help prevent any recurrence of this injury.
